MULISSA Inauguration - RFID Technology

Dear Professionals, MULISSA inauguration function was held at the Department of Library and Information Science, Mysore University. The chief guest Shri B.R Badhri spoke abut the history of RFID technology, its relevance in different industries and its use in libraries. He also spoke about Library Management Systems, their functional as well as technical aspects. How RFID technology works, along with its uses in cost effectiveness, multiple languages, book drop unit, improved services through prior reservation and prevention of theft were addressed. RFID is an off-shoot of barcoding which has been around for 40 years. A chip embedded in a book can have details such as author, title, subject, edition etc and this information can be accessed at the circulation desk itself. The technology enables automatic identification of objects. In the case of libraries, it is applied to books journals, CDs etc. Chairperson and faculty advisor for MULISSA, Dr Khaiser Nikam briefed about the history of the Department and the role of Dr. P.K. IFLA LIS Student Paper Award 2009 IFLA offers an “IFLA Library and Information Science (LIS) Student Paper Award”, coordinated by the IFLA Section Education and Training Standing Committee (SET SC). Objectives of the Award Encourage LIS students to submit papers regarding the current IFLA World Library and Information Congress theme. Reward the best LIS student paper submission for the IFLA Congress each year. Give LIS students the opportunity to take part in an IFLA Congress. Give LIS students the chance to learn more about IFLA activities. Prepare and encourage the new LIS Generation to participate in IFLA activities. The target group is LIS students from all over the world, who are enrolled in a course of study for the “first professional qualification” (e.g. bachelor/graduate diploma/master) in the country of study. PhD students are not eligible for the award. All IFLA Sections are requested to open their Call for Papers to students. Accepted student papers will be given either in the relevant Section’s conference session or, if appropriate, in the SET Open Session. To help students with less experience in abstracts/paper writing, templates for both the abstract and the paper are published on the SET website, http://www.ifla.org/VII/s23/index.htm To apply for the award, LIS students whose abstracts have been accepted by any IFLA Section should follow these guidelines: Submit the following three (3) items: the full conference paper; copy of any IFLA Section's letter of acceptance; letter of recommendation from the student's LIS Professor. Workshop on Digital Preservation in India 7th November 2008, FICCI, New Delhi With the wide-scale adoption of the Internet and the rise of the World Wide Web, the world has been overwhelmed by digital information. Individuals and institutions are producing digital data on a massive scale: some of it is born, lives and dies only in digital form. Digital preservation is emerging as a trustworthy solution ensuring long-term access to the information. While large-scale projects have been initiated across the world in the area of Digital Preservation, much work needs to be done in India. At the same time the requirements in India are different from the requirements in developed regions of the world. Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in association with Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India is organizing a Workshop on Digital Preservation in India on 7th November 2008 at FICCI, Federation House, Tansen Marg, New Delhi-110001. The objective of this workshop is to bring together all stakeholders to a common platform to understand the activities undertaken by various bodies in this area and to develop a national stand to promote, educate and encourage digital preservation further. National Consultation on Open Solutions for e-Governance The need for developing standards for interoperability among various e-Governance applications has a great relevance for ensuring success of National e-Governance Plan (NeGP). The government has already created a draft policy, which is open for discussion and feedback from various stakeholder groups (see http://egovstandards.gov.in/public-review/egscontent.2008-08-22.3525430649/…) Keeping in view the importance of the subject, we have decided to host a series of consultations to generate awareness and to get inputs. The first national consultation in the series is scheduled to be hosted as a dedicated session on "Open Solutions for e-Governance" during Skoch Summit 2008 India @ Work (www.indiaatwork.in) on October 23, 2008 at India Habitat Center from 2.00 pm - 5.30 pm. In this round presentations are expected from Red Hat, TCS, Department of IT, NIC, IBM & Sun Microsystems etc. Since large number of domain experts and users are traveling from across the country to attend this summit and given that the policy is open for public review, this may be an ideal occasion to get a first hand feel. Some of the issues that this consultation seeks to focus on include: 1. Rationale and implications of the draft policy on promotion of e-governance in India ? Feedback and suggestions. 2. What could be the institutional mechanisms for supporting open solution implementations in the government? 3. What are the best examples of open solutions that are worth sharing and replicating everywhere and how can such a sharing be enabled? 4. How to further enhance the skill base for open solution implementations? By hosting a series of multi stakeholder consultations on the subject, we propose to facilitate a deeper understanding and learning of the issues, ideate on solutions and provide an informed participatory feedback into policy from an independent platform. <bold><color><param>0100,0100,0100</param><bigger>International tree park invites donation of Botany documents and related books </bold>The Dharma Vana Arboretum (DVA), a non-profit international tree park being developed at Bhongir in Nalgonda district, Andhra Pradesh, India, appeals for donation of botanical publications such as: - books & monographs - scientific journals - research reports - theses - conference proceedings - off-prints from closed libraries, retired teachers, scientists, forest officers as well as the general public. These documents would be preserved for posterity in the DVAs research and reference library for the benefit of teachers, research scientists and students. The DVA Library would be developed as one of the finest scientific libraries specialising in dendrology and silviculture not only in India but also in the entire South Asia. Although the DVAs major focus of collection development is documents about <bold>trees</bold>, it also welcomes works in related fields such as <bold>forestry, horticulture, ethnobotany, soil science, plant taxonomy, entomology, sacred groves, and philosophy. </bold> Spanning 455+ acres, the Dharma Vana Arboretum (www.arboretum.org.in) would conserve thousands of species of plants and over a thousand tree species, many of which are endangered, through innovative horticultural and silvicultural practices that meet or exceed international standards. UCLA scientists have found that for computer-savvy middle-aged and older adults, searching the Internet triggers key centers in the brain that control decision-making and complex reasoning. The findings demonstrate that Web search activity may help stimulate and possibly improve brain function.
