Dear Professional Colleagues, Congratulations to Department of Public Libraries, Govt. of Karnataka for having launched the Portal on Karnataka in Kannada entitled " Suvarna Karnataka Kannada Antarjala Vahini (Suvarna Karnataka Portal)" on the occasion of Golden Jubilee Celebration of the formation of Karnataka State. This unique Portal gives various kinds of information about Kannada and Karnataka including Education, Health, Agriculture, Entertainment, Kannada Films and songs, Kannada Literature, Fine Arts, Sports, Cooking, Law, etc. One of the main attraction is Children Section with stories and songs. College Post Bangalore-560059 Seminar Comparative Analysis of Citation Databases: Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar The volume of scientific literature grew exponentially as a result of increased R& D activities after World War II. This posed different problems for users and indexers of information. The shortcomings of traditional subject indexes resulted in duplication of scientific activity. Sometimes, the terms used in subject index were ambiguous. These problems necessitated a unified index to scientific literature that was current, free from semantic difficulties and not dependent on the knowledge of subject indexers. Citation index emerged not only as retrieval tool but also used as an evaluation tool for evaluating scientists and to provide a way to search for and analyze the literature in a way not possible through simple keyword/topical searching. It also enables users to gather data on the "impact" of individual authors and journals, as well as assessing particular areas of research activity and publication. ISI (Thomson Scientific) citation databases have been used for decades as the only tools for locating citations. ISI databases (currently known as Web of Science), however, may no longer be sufficient because it covers only journal articles. There are other citation databases, which covers non-journal documents also. This seminar will present a pilot study of the new citation databases like, Google Scholar & Scopus. Dear LIS Friends, I would like to request your attention to my earlier mail "LIS Departments need Accreditation System and New Courses". We have a good news that Indian Engineering Degrees will soon be accredited in US and other developed countries. Read the news from Rediff.com [ http://www.rediff.com/money/2007/jul/05eng.htm ] National Board of Accreditation (NBA) of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the accreditation agency for Engineering Education in India. They did a good job in getting a provisional signatory membership in Washington Accord, which recognises engineering degrees among the member countries. NBA is allowed 2 years to to bring its academic programmes, curricula and syllabus, examination and evaluation system to the international level and revise its accreditation system to make it fully outcome based, with credit system for flexibility and continuous evaluation for improved learning being the basis of such programmes.If NBA and our technical institutes are successful in achieving this goal, Indian engineering degrees will be internationaly recognised. Here is the Breaking News - An Open Access Society for India

Dear Friends, India now has a number of individuals and institutions working for the cause of Open Access. Time has come to further boost such efforts through a body fully dedicated for it. Such a body can promote better coordination of individual initiatives under a collaborative framework aiming Open Access in India. I am happy to inform you that a group of young professionals has formed a Registered Society under The Travancore Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act, 1955 on 19th March 2008 with Registration Number : ER-157/08. It is known as Open Knowledge Society (OKSociety). Its website is located at http://www.oksociety.org This newly formed 'OKSociety' aims to promote Open Access in India through creating awareness and organizing training programmes. However we all know this is not enough. After getting the training on implementing institutional repositories, automation of libraries and on-line journal publishing; people do need some support services in putting their training into practice. These support services or 'hand-holding' are essential at least in initial stages. Unfortunately these support services are not available in the present market scenario. As this is too specialized domain with very small niche. OKSociety would act as a forum to provide support services through an array of volunteers. One another major bottle neck for small and medium institutions is that they do not have high end servers connected to Internet on 24/7 basis. This hinders the visibility of good work done by such institutions. Better servers and Internet infrastructure sometimes become too expensive to justify the exposure of good work done at such institutions. Even in large institutions, libraries may not be able to get good share of the server and bandwidth from the institutional pools. OKSociety could create a pool of high end servers having adequate bandwidth. This pool of infrastructure could be used by member institutions. Such a common reliable infrastructure can also be used for publishing Open Access Journals as well as hosting Institutional Repositories under the supervision of the Society. I wish the society all the success. I am one of its members and hope in near future more people will get associated with it. This Society would need dedicated people to carry forward its mission. I can understand it is just the beginning and more information needs to be put on its site.
