Invitation to participate in the 2021 Library Automation Perceptions survey

The 2021 International Library Automation Perceptions survey conducted through Library Technology Guides is now underway. This survey, conducted annually since 2007, provides an important opportunity for libraries to register their perceptions of the strategic automation products they use, organizations that provide these products, and the quality of support delivered. The survey also probes at considerations for migrating to new systems and the level of interest in open source products. While the numeric rating scales support the statistical results of the study, the narrative comments provide even more interesting insight into the current state of library automation satisfaction. Comments will be published in the survey results, though redacted to conceal any text that might identify the individual or organization responding. Please help your fellow libraries who might be in the process of evaluating library automation options by responding to the survey. Any information regarding vendor performance and product quality can be helpful when making strategic decisions regarding automation alternatives. A large number of responses strengthen the impact of the survey and the subsequent report. This survey also provides constructive criticism to the vendors involved to help them address any prevailing issues or concerns. If you have responded in previous years, please respond again this year to help identify any trends regarding improvement or worsening of the products or support services. From the msg posted (given at the end of the mail) , it is not clear whether the event is a free pgm or paid one. The website https://bosla2013.wixsite.com/boslatifr2021 visited (today 30th Nov at 1.00 pm) doesn't seem to have any registeration fee details. There is no mention of fee payable in the Google form. But when the Google form is filled-up, at the end it is expecting us to send the details of payment . Friends: I just listened to a talk by Prof. Thomas Pradeu, coordinator of the Institute for Philosophy in Biology and Medicine <https://www.philinbiomed.org/>, CNRS, on why science needs philosophy. Here is the link to the talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nE03FDdCR-Y He talks about philosophy *in* science as distinct from philosophy *of* science. I want all members of this list who use or are interested in bibliometrics to listen to the talk. Prof. Pradeu has divided his talk (indeed the 2021 Annual Public Lecture at the Indian Academy of Sciences) into three parts, one of them devoted to bibliometrics. Prof. P Balaram, former director of IISc and former editor of *Current Science*, has often lamented that bibliometrics is being used in India, mostly by members of the LIS community, in ways bordering on the ridiculous and in ways the founder of citation indexing in science and the social sciences, Dr Garfield, would not have approved. Prof. Pradeu and colleagues have used bibliometrics (as one of many tools/approaches) brilliantly to show how philosophy can be used to advance science. The LIS community should be indebted to the Academy for having invited Prof. Pradeu to give the public lecture in this year's Annual Meeting and making the talk available as an excellently produced video recording. The UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science was adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO at its 41st session, in November 2021. "UNESCO Recommendations are legal instruments in which “the General Conference formulates principles and norms for the international regulation of any particular question and invites the Member States to take whatever legislative or other steps may be required in conformity with the constitutional practice of each State and the nature of the question under consideration to apply the principles and norms aforesaid within their respective territories”. Emanating from the Organization's supreme governing body and hence possessing great authority, recommendations are intended to influence the development of national laws and practices."
