It can simulate populations at multiple scales, from small communities to states. BharatSim uses a synthetic population created by applying statistical methods and machine learning algorithms to survey data from multiple sources, including the Census of India, the India Human Development Survey, the National Sample Survey, and the Gridded Population of the World.

Friends, Here is an interesting article from BBC that deserves to be shared widely among Indian librarians, esp. academic and research librarians. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cevj80gld7do Ms Ananya Vajpayee, currently with CSDS, Delhi, was a Ph D student at the University of Chicago, where the great A K Ramanujan was heading the Centre for South Asian Studies and Mr James Nye was heading the South Asia Collection in the library, in 1996. In an interview she gave a few days ago to Mr Soutik Biswas, BBC's India correspondent, and author of this essay, she says, "At the Regenstein Library, I never failed to find the books I needed or get them quickly if they weren't already there." "The books are safe, valued, accessible and used. I've visited libraries, archives and institutions in every part of India and the story in our country is universally dismal. Here they were lost or destroyed or neglected or very often made inaccessible." Shouldn't we, members of the LIS profession, act immediately and make our libraries as user friendly and welcoming as the Regenstein Library in Chicago and other academic libraries in the West? Friends, Greetings from Chennai, India. The future of knowledge exchange in STEM, social sciences and other areas of scholarship is through preprints supported by post public peer review.* The journal, as we know it, has served us well for over 300 years till men like Robert Maxwell came on the scene and greed of the publishers became the dominant feature and the interest of science and scientists were sacrificed at the altar of their greed. Recall that Maxwell openly said that publishing journals had become a perpetual money making machine. In the past the imperialists came as traders to countries of the Global South and colonized them and plundered their wealth. The case of the British rule of the subcontinent was the best (or should we say the worst) example. This is exactly what is happening now. What is worse, we are willingly inviting the publishers and surrendering to them. At least when the British wanted to subjugate India, there was some, even if only sporadic, resistance, witness the heroic battles waged by Rani Velu Nachiar, Rani Jhansi, Tipu Sultan, and several others. Now we are giving a red carpet welcome to commercial publishers of the West and taking them on a 'bus tour' to our best academic and other research institutes (including IISc!) so they could teach the faculty and doctoral students how to write and submit research papers that would be acceptable to them for publication if one also accepts to pay APC and surrender copyright to one's own intellectual creation, often facilitated by taxpayers' money. I often wonder how a nation which ranks close to the top in inequality can decide to spend its scarce resources on paying APC to publish research papers (which could jolly well be published in other journals which do not charge APC or better still placed in a respectable global archive at no cost). Why can't we follow the example of the US NIH and insist that all research papers resulting from public funding be made publicly available at the same time they appear in a journal? Why can't we have an equivalent of OSTP's Nelson memo? At the least, why can't we implement the CSIR's plan and the DBT-DST mandate of open access through institutional and national level repositories such as Science Central and CSIR Central? Makiing Indian research immediate non-APC OA

Friends, Season's greetings and a Happy and productive New Year. [I have sent the following to many senior indian scientists and librarians]. Many funders of scientific research have either mandated or insist on research funded by them being made open access immediately on publication. Please see: https://claude.ai/chat/87d94ddf-169c-4dfe-af4a-d4f68e365384. Why can't all Indian Govt agencies that fund research mandate immediate open access for all research they fund? Also, they may stop immediately the practice of underwriting Indian researcher's paying APC for publishing their papers. In my view using taxpayers' money to pay APC (and thus enriching publishers some of whom declare profit margins upwards of 25% year after year is unethical and immoral, especially in a country which ranks close to the top in the inequality index). The money we pay as APC (the new ONOS plan has earmarked Rs 1,500 milliion for APC payment every year) can be put to better use - if not for povrty alleviation and improving elementary education, at least for attracting bright students, esp. girls, to science education and research with attractive scholarships or providing researchers with travel grants to attend conferences or visit laboratories other than their own to pursue collaborative research. It is well established that an average researcher/ scientist regularly uses/ reads 5-15 journals. In case of interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary research, a specialist collaborates with other specialists and not himself tries to become a specialist in other disciplines. 2. In the existing consortia model (about a dozen in the country) large parts of thousands of journals have remained unused by the majority. Yet publishers got benefit and substantially increased their profit margin. It is important to note that publishers never allowed for the ‘pay per use’ model, which is the most rational and economical method of incurring cost for online journals. Thus providing access to all journals to all users is a waste and providing access is wrongly equated with ‘use’. 3. Now ONOS is increasing access from 8079 Journals to 13400 Journals and thereby increasing more unused journals by enabling publishers to further increase their profit margins. 4. ONOS is also increasing the reach, that is, providing access to 6380 institutions from the existing 2360 and to 177.82 lakh users from the existing 56.7 lakh. Have they ascertained the requirements of these additional institutions and individuals? Trying to provide access to disinterested institutions and users by doubling the cost from 1000 crores to 2000 crores per year is a criminal waste of taxpayer’s money. 5. Without ascertaining the present expenditure on APC, allocating meagre 150 crores per year (almost one-third of this budget is being spent by a single major institution) will not serve the purpose of promoting Open Access. This country needs at least another 1000 crores per year towards APC. If 1000 crores is allocated for APC, the total expenditure is going to be tripled. If APC budget is not increased, selected institutions and individuals of influence will get APC grants that to for so called undefined “selected good quality open access journals” without any justice to the majority. In nutshell, what was running in a decentralised way according to the local requirements at Rs.1000 crores per annum is centralised at a cost of Rs. 2000 to 3000 crores per annum with three year locking period of assured subscription to publishers.
