Just as oil powered the 20th century, data drives the 21st. This workshop explains why data is important for libraries, and why librarians need to learn how to handle and make sense of it. It introduces Library Carpentry, a training programme designed specifically for librarians. It demonstrates useful skills such as organizing data, managing text, and cleaning up book and journal records using the open-source tool, OpenRefine.The goal is to help library personnel improve their existing services and offer new, data-based services to their users. The workshop also looks at real-life examples showing how these techniques can be applied to library catalogues and databases. Skills like finding patterns in text, automatically identifying names and places, translating content across languages, and matching records from different sources are all covered. It also explores how modern AI tools can be integrated into this work. By learning these skills, libraries can keep up with the fast-changing world of information and serve their communities better.
