Libraries in Phone Directory

Dear Friends, I did a telephone directory search using BSNL's website: http://www.ap.bsnl.com/enquiry/search.asp When I tried the search string 'library' in "name - anywhere" I got 14 results. Out of this only 8 were real libraries. Then I did a search for the same string (library) in "address - anywhere", and I got 220 results. Twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad do have a few hundred libraries - big and small, public and private, academic & special -- all put together. Only very few of them (just 8) have phone numbers listed against their own identification as a library. The larger number of results in the second search shows that people use library to identify their addresses / location by saying near 'so and so library'. While librarians are failing to use telephone directory as a means to publicity or as a tool for communication, unintended publicity comes from the public -- of course non-library users! At least that way they find libraries useful! Any comments? Guidelines for Appropriate List Behavior

Dear All, I agree with Mr.Manjunath. It is too much to fight on the discussion forum. If they disagree to that extent, let them exchange mails on their individual mail addresses but not on the discussion forum. Let us stop it. There are many itelligent people who know little english and many English experts who know nothing in the subject. We need not argue so much on only one issue. We have so many new things to be discussed on the forum. The one like FAQs in Interviews etc, yes let new ideas be brought to all our notices. I visited the site refered by Mr.Manjunath, for all your convenience I have pasted the following few paragraphs of the Guidelines for appropriate List Behaviours. Let us at least try to follow them from now onwards. Thanks, Konnur. Guidelines for Appropriate List Behavior The following guidelines are offered as advice for how to best participate in this discussion in a manner that will both contribute to the experience of all readers and also reflect well on you. Say something substantial. Simply saying "I agree" (in so many words) or "I disagree" (in so many words) does not meet this guideline. Specific technical questions are, however, quite appropriate, as are brief answers to such questions. Say something new. Mere redundancy will not convince an opponent of their error. Explaining the same argument differently in an attempt to make them see the light has not been proven to be an effective strategy. "Getting the last word" is for children. We're all beyond the age when we should be concerned with being the one to end the argument. Just because you are the last to speak doesn't mean you won the argument. Agree to disagree. The likelihood of convincing someone to change a strongly held opinion is nil. State your case, but give up on the idea of converting the heathen. Take "conversations" off the list. When list interaction becomes two-sided (two individuals trading comments or arguments) it is a sign that you should take the discussion off the list and correspond with that person directly. If the discussion was of interest to the general membership you will see others posting on the topic as well. Remember that you are being judged by the quality of your contributions. No matter whether you are employed or not, or a certain age, or have a certain education, you can create a good professional reputation by how you contribute to a large electronic discussion like Web4Lib. On the other hand, you can ruin your reputation even faster and easier. NEVER send email in anger. Go ahead and compose a message in anger, since that may help you work through what you're angry about, but don't send it. Sleep on it. You will nearly always decide to not send it or to recompose it. There's a reason for that. Be civil. Treat others how you wish to be treated. No matter how insulting someone is to you, you will always look better to the bystanders (of which there are many, I hasten to remind you) by responding politely. Respect the rights of others. An electronic discussion is a commons. Your right to post ends at the right of others to not be insulted, badgered, or to have their time needlessly wasted. --- "G. K. In Asia, alone, the number of English users has topped 350 million, roughly the combined populations of the United States, Britain and Canada. Please read the recent article "NOT THE QUEEN'S ENGLISH?", published in the NEWSWEEK (7 March 2005), and you will find answer why do we need high proficiency in English lanugage. Dear All, I was checking my Gmail and came across the term 'Phishing' in the mail option. Gmail is a very good mail service and is still in beta and one of the best available today. Gmail is good for lot many reasons like search facility for mails that you receive, labeling the mails for organizing, and of course Phishing. It is important for any LIS professionals to be with the latest technology. Phishing: Phishing is a form of fraud in which a message sender pretends to be a representative of a legitimate organization in an attempt to trick the recipient into divulging important personal information like a password or bank account number. If you believe the message that you got is a phishing attack, you can report it to the Gmail abuse team and help thwart the attack and others like it. Reporting this message as an attack will send the entire message to Gmail the team for review. To learn more just open Gmail that you have received and in the 'Show options' link you can find out more about this (check out wiht friends if you do not have a gmail id). Many of you would remember the mails that you would have forwarded to others thinking that the forward would fetch help to someone in trouble or promising a prize like a mobile phone etc. and the sender would have requested a copy to the original sender. This is nothing but drama to fetch the new email ids' and to send unsolicited or spam mails to the available mail Ids'. Pls remember not to send any such forwards as all the recepients would get so many spams. Try getting Gmail from your friends and start using it immediately as it requires invitation. Hi, Lot's of initiatives by Mysore University L & IS Department and others too. Though commendable, I am still unable to digest the fact that everything is terribly English centric. To begin with ...Communication skills and Presentation skills can be put into action in any language. You do not need mastery in English language to show off your competencies in Communication and Presentation skills. PowerPoint will certainly come in handy !! Mysore University is in Karnataka and the regional language is Kannada. There is a vast amount of Knowledge available in the regional language, thousands of books are published every year in Kannada. All the public and academic libraries in Karnataka, stock Kannada books. Old Kannada manuscripts are a source of history. Technical processing of these books is hampered due to lack of in-depth Kannada language skills of L & IS professionals . I would like to know what Mysore University L & IS is doing for the language of the land. Taking pride in producing Library Science graduates with all the English language, Communication, Presentation and IT skills and all the soft skiils sounds fantastic But does anybody think of the regional languages or the National language ? Doesn't Mysore University have to bother about this. Majority of the LIS teachers in India are fully concentrating on imparting knowledge directly relevant to L & IS sphere and they are the ones who need to be appreciated. English language, communication and presentation skills and other soft skills are secondary and need not be taught in a PG Course devoted to a specialized field. This would not only lead to diversion of limited resources but also affect the students who have just two years to learn about library and information science, gain a solid foundation and build their whole career upon it. All the softskills required for survival in the big bad world of WORKING can be picked up over a period of time or instantly from Training shops. With high unemployment rates there is no possiblity of Campus interviews or Job fairs during LIS Conferences. An essential skill for a freshly minted LIS graduate would be...... how to write a resume, how to hunt for a job and how to face an interview ? Does any LIS Department in India teach this ? Classification, Cataloguing and Indexing of Books : In India we keep reinventing the wheel. The same monograph is classified, catalogued and indexed in thousands libraries by thousands of professionals. It's high time this duplication of work comes to an end. The time, money and resources consumed by this task is phenomenal and can be put to better use in serving the customers. With the advent of library automation and internet penetration we can easily download the bibliographical details of monographs inclusive of call numbers and keywords from various WebPACs and integrate them into individual library's databases, may be after incorporating certain local variations. We are in the twenty first century and the days or original cataloging at individual library level are over, especially with respect to titles published in English. Dear Sir, its very fascinating week for LISC professionals.At last we break our shackles and come to know that English is the language which is very much need for us to communicate in this global village. But still there is lot of debate about weather one should have mastery over English language or not. Dr S.R. Ranganthan himself stated in one of his book " Reference services".That if he didn't not visit England and got associated with Some of leading professionals in England at that time.He could not able to introduce and practise the concept of reference service in India in a systematic way. Was Dr. Ranganthan communicated in regional language to get know about the Reference Service?. Even tourist guide in places like Agra, Delhi. Rajasthan etc are earning 40.000 to 50.000 in a season by explaining the history and cultural heritage of India to Western people in English If we are not associated with the other world it is very difficult for us to know the new developments.In regional language we can only able to know the tips of an iceberg. Connotea-Free Reference Management Service from Nature

Nature Publishing Group has developed a tool to help you store, manage and share your online references and links. Connotea is a free, easy-to-use service, where you can save and annotate reference lists and links with one click, and discover new publications by viewing other user's links. In Connotea, every user's links are visible both to visitors and to every other user, and different users' libraries are linked together through the use of common tags or common bookmarks. Connotea also recognises links to certain websites, and automatically collects the bibliographic information for the article or book that is being linked to. The great advantage is that you can get to know the persons with similar interest and see their stored reference links. Also every article listing on Connotea has an RSS link at the bottom of the page. This allows you to be notified of new additions to the page by subscribing to the RSS feed in your RSS reader. However many reference management tools are available on the net but those are for general purposes. This tool is basically developed for research purpose with some value additions. DC -------- Original Message -------- How Google will scan the world, 1 book at a time Steve Johnson Chicago Times February 25, 2005 As Google prepares to create the world's most comprehensive digital library, it's getting harder not to think of the company as the next Microsoft, morphing from a friendly Internet helper with a cutesy name into an awesome and inescapable force of digital nature. Already the dominant search engine, the California technology company is testing Gmail, a free e-mail service that's likely to be a blockbuster, Google Maps, a rival to Mapquest, and Google Desktop, a function that allows users to search within their computers much more quickly than Microsoft Windows does. And then there's the small matter of accumulating vast chunks of humankind's recorded knowledge. Even as you read this, Google scanners are busy making bits and bytes out of books from the Harvard, Stanford, Oxford and University of Michigan libraries, as well as from the New York Public Library, a project that ultimately could total more than 57 million volumes. The company's goal in all it does, it says, is "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful" (along with, you know, selling ads alongside the world's information). But another goal seems to be ubiquity, and as Bill Gates has learned, when you become unavoidable, you also become resented. Altruistic project For now, though, Google remains mostly well-liked because the core of its business, the search engine, is so good. And the book-scanning project it's taking on seems more altruistic than not because Google is bearing the enormous (and, of course, unspecified) cost of copying the books into the digital world. "There are [other] people who had that vision," says Sidney Verba, director of the Harvard University Library. "What Google had was the vision and the ambition, the technical skill. ..." Shifting to a whisper, he adds the most important factor: "a lot of money -- in some sense I think more than they knew what to do with. .. For these kinds of people to invest millions and millions of dollars in it, it is a good exploitation of the profit sector for public purposes." The University of Michigan says its pre-Google digital collection of 21,000 volumes is among the country's "most ambitious." But making it -- actually placing the books, page by page, onto scanners and then making sure the result is clean and accurate -- is very slow, hard work. "At its current rate of digital production," the school explains in a press release, "it would take the university more than a thousand years to digitize the 7 million volumes in the collection. Google plans to do the job in a matter of years." Beyond vague talk about Google having developed a much more efficient process, the project's specifics are secret. At Harvard, for instance, Google won't allow reporters to visit or photograph the scanning currently being done -- of 40,000 volumes as a kind of pilot project, just to make sure the books don't get damaged or lost -- at the university library's 5-million-volume off-campus storage facility. But the aims seem transparent enough. It will bring to the masses these great research institutions, full of books one would normally need a plane ride and permission to access, and make them as easy to search for and within as a particular city's restaurant listings. "The company as a whole has been really excited about it," says Susan Wojcicki, Google's director of product management, in part because it relates to the company's roots. "The founders were working on a library digitization project when they wound up creating a search engine that today is called Google. "We're just really excited to be working with these institutions as well. A lot of them have been around for hundreds of years," adds Wojcicki. Google's age: 6 1/2. Libraries will get copies The books will be gathered by Google in the Google Print company subdivision, known previously for trying to get publishers to put their current books in print up for public perusal. The libraries will also get their own copies of their texts turned binary. "We're very anxious to make sure this is of real service to our own users and a public good, as well," Verba says. "We're very sensitive to not having somebody come back and say, `Look, you've just turned over to a monopoly something that should belong to the world.'" The project, almost everybody agreed at its December announcement, holds enormous promise. Scholars will be able to learn, at the press of a button, which books have discussed Francis Bacon, for instance, and in what manner. Journalists and bloggers can add books to their research repertoire; previously, they have used mostly other journalism, the already-digitized and quickly searchable record of newspapers, magazines and some television shows. "There'll be more of that contextual information which you'll be able to get more readily," says Harvard's Verba, "How that'll change the way people think, I don't know, but it's really exciting. "It will give us this huge digitized file of our books to do things with that we don't know yet what they are. Searching text is really a thing that's on the frontier. As it evolves, we will have a text to search. We are thinking of it as a very valuable resource for things that are not 100 percent clear." Ordinary users can see the project at work already. Type "books and culture" into the company's familiar search interface, and you get access not only to all the Web pages Google has indexed that contain those words, but also, right near the top of your search, to one of the early books to be scanned in, an 1896 tome of that title by Hamilton Wright Mabie. Right away you notice that there are no ads on the page, and there are no plans to add them "at this time," Wojcicki says. You may also notice there are links to help you "Buy this book" and to "Find this book in a library." No printing allowed You can't print the book out or digitally cut and paste any of it, even for this, an out-of-copyright volume. (The restrictions will be more severe on in-copyright volumes, essentially those printed after 1920, limiting searchers to seeing a line or two around their search term. But Stanford law professor Lawrence Lessig, writing in the Los Angeles Times, questioned the right of Google to make available even "snippets" of copyrighted material.) Verba says you can certainly make notes on it, and that a print-on-demand feature is worth considering. In the meantime, want to know whether Mabie's "Books and Culture" contains the word "ominous"? Type the word into the "Search within this book" field. There it is on page 193, in a sentence praising the ability of the cultured man to recognize the characteristics of his era. The thing that's really encouraging, Verba says, is that the project turns the current fears of scholars and parents on their ear. "There's no academic and in fact there's no parent with a teenager who isn't worried about the fact that that generation will believe that all knowledge is on the Internet and on Google and will never want to open a book again," he says. "The nice thing about this project is that it's a kind of, `If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.' People will go to Google, and they will find books, and they will have to then go to the library and get the books. We think this is really a nice way of squaring that circle." ----------

Dear All It has been a fascinating week or so of discussions on this important issue. Several very useful practical suggestions have been made many of which we would like to consider for our training programme at NCSI. Some thoughts based on my experience with NCSI training programme. I think there is a strong case for introducing a formal course in communication (English) and other soft skills in L&IS courses and training programmes. As part of a 1 credit course on communication skills (IS 210) we have included in our training programme (see http://www.ncsi.iisc.ernet.in/training/courses.html), we had experimented with a faculty from our Foreign Language School in IISc, specializing in scientific/technical communication, teaching English communication skills and presentation skills to one batch of trainees. We did see appreciable improvement towards the end of the course. Unfortunately this faculty has left IISc and we are yet to find a way of regularizing this course. We also have a formal 1 credit course (IS 249), in second semester, called Seminars (see above URL page). Trainees are given select papers and are expected to give presentations after studying these. Apart from these, each instructor also makes the trainees to give ample number of presentations based on assignments. NCSI alumni association (NCSI-NET) also organizes occasional guest lectures on communication skills/ personality development as part of its monthly meetings in Bangalore. While these are a few of our efforts, we still have a long way to go in getting these efforts to produce consistently good results. I think it should not be difficult to introduce a formal 1 or 2 credits course in L&IS programmes in universities since most universities have full-fledged departments in English/ Journalism/ Mass communication. Nice to see this being done at Mysore University. British Council conducts exams and provides training material related to Business English. I believe they also conduct English proficiency exams for corporate employees. Is there someway we could get British council to conduct a few workshops for L&IS teachers? I think there is much scope in this area. I remember several workshops on scientific/ technical writing skills used to be conducted a few years back. Mr. Arunachalam (of MSSRF, Chennai) used to be an instructor a few of these courses. Could these be revived? Practice of some instructors to apportion some marks for correct use of English in the exam papers is a very useful one (something most secondary/ high schools do!). I wonder if this should be a mandatory feature in L&IS programmes. As we all know, language is something that is learnt more by practice. I find many students are either shy or scared of speaking, worrying about making mistakes. In as much as it is in their hand to overcome this, it is also the responsibility of the teachers (and fellow students) to encourage such students, instead of making fun of them (verbally or through body language). I know couple of our trainees, who were quite poor in communication, made very good progress simply by being bold and not afraid of speaking (and making mistakes). I agree with Ms. Nagarathna that in the final count, the onus is on the student doing well should come from within instructors can provide opportunities, directions and feedback based on their performance. Also, does it make sense to encourage students to spend some time reading English literature (e.g. fiction)? Though such reading habit is usually picked up in younger age, we also know that this is one easy way of improving English usage. There is lots of very useful self-learning material available online on this topic. I feel we should prepare a good gateway site pointing to quality learning material. On our training site we currently make available tutorials and self-learning material related to technical topics (see http://www.ncsi.iisc.ernet.in/training/Tutorials.htm). We can easily extend this to communication skills related material. InfoLibrarian site could also host such material. Finally, a word of caution about pushing McLuhans saying Medium is the message too far. We should avoid emphasizing this message too much, lest our students begin to think that form and style is more important than content and message. Certainly message/content should be the prime focus (Content is king!), and not form and style. I feel employers should avoid assessing potential employees based only on their communication abilities. We know competencies vary some are good in doing and relatively poor in expressing. I thank Shalini for the quick response. The clarity she has brought in regarding LIS schools in a University set up and Training Institutions is worth remembering by everyone. The odds against which the LIS educator has to carry out his/her duties look insurmountable indeed. But then, nobody kicks a dead horse - It is only the active, energetic, enthusiastic & innovative teachers like Shalini and others get criticized! My only humble suggestion is that teachers like her should continue to serve the student & research community without getting dismayed by occasional criticisms. My Path To an Alternative Career by Paul Duckworth How does a librarian move from a traditional job to something outside the box of library walls? If this sounds like a Zen koan to you, perhaps you're thinking about it too hard - just let the energy flow into your solar plexus. When you're centered, you can follow the path of the stepping stones that are submerged below the surface of the water. How? Step-by-step, feeling your way, remembering to breathe and center yourself - and not being afraid to get your feet wet. First Steps First My path began with the recognition that it was time to move on from my public library job in Missouri. I'd been there for over twenty-five years, moving upwards in responsibility. The job was great, my salary was excellent, and I had every reason to stay, except three: I was restless, felt stagnated, and found myself experiencing boredom. "What to do?" I thought. "How do I uproot myself? Where do I begin?" For me, a recent marriage had brought a fresh perspective and someone else's needs to consider. For many reasons, we decided to relocate to within a few hours of Toronto. So, the first decision had been made: the geographic focus was defined. Time to get out the career and resume guides. I raided my library's shelves, looked at more than a few, studied every style and strategy, then set the books down and never picked them up again. What I did reach for, though, was the ear of anyone who would listen to me as I told my story. Never underestimate the power of these words: "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you." I found talking with many people, especially those not in the library field, of immense assistance in clarifying muddy waters. I began bookmarking library job sites and searching them again and again - sometimes to the point where I felt desperate. There were jobs, but few interesting ones in the geographical area where I needed to land. I also reached out to colleagues through the networking approach, including joining an e-mail list from a state adjoining Ontario. It was fascinating to learn about the issues going on there, which affected services, employment, selection, and the financial health of libraries. Alternatives Can Find You Time was getting short. We needed to move before autumn, but nothing seemed to pan out. What to do...? Be persistent, I reminded myself. Success is 10% inspiration, 90% perspiration. So, I did everything I could not to let discouragement slow me down: meditation, yoga, talking to friends, and strategizing through good note taking. And then, there it was - a job posting on an e-mail list for a library vendor in New York State. Good fortune - the vendor was a major supplier for my library. My application led to a response with a questionnaire to fill out; this led to more e-mail, and then... a call out of the blue from the company's sales manager, followed by a second one. Could I come to the ALA conference in Orlando, expenses paid, to meet with the company president and him? Yes, I could, and I did! I flew to Orlando and visited with them. And, while I was there with some free time to visit the exhibits hall, I stopped by the booth of another vendor I worked with on materials acquisition, to meet some of the friendly staff I had visited with on the phone over the years. So, I had a good chat with several staff, and casually mentioned that I was interviewing for a job that would take me to New York State. "We just happen to have an opening for an account rep for that area," one of their vice presidents mentioned. Would I be interested in talking about this position? Yes, I was, and I did. We talked, and the job sounded as intriguing and challenging as the first one. Always keep as many options open as possible, I reminded myself. Don't start closing doors until you know for sure which door you're going to walk through. When One Door Opens... At the end of the weekend I expected a job offer from the first vendor, who had flown me to the conference. It didn't come. So I waited, weighed my options, and decided that the better choice for me was the new possibility. Then, amazingly, a friend told me about yet a third prospect with the university library in the town to which we were considering moving. While in Toronto on vacation, I faxed my application, and within a few days had a telephone interview with the search committee. Within days, an offer was made by the second vendor and I accepted. A few days later, the initial vendor indicated they wanted to hire me. And, as I withdrew my application for the academic position, they indicated that I had been their top candidate. How is it, you ask, being outside those traditional walls? Well, I travel inside those walls throughout my sales territory, meet great people (we librarians ARE interesting), and sometimes have the exciting opportunity to show up for work in my home office in my pajamas. I still speak "library," am appreciated by my employer, and network every day with colleagues and customers across the country. My employer is tops, the job brings me the challenge I was looking for, and I'm traveling to lots of places I had never seen before. The path ahead isn't clear, but, truly, it never is. For right now, I'm enjoying getting my feet wet, taking one step at a time, and remembering to breathe.

But please ask your self how many languages these european countries and for that matter any other country have compared to India. And by the way why do you think any two librarians in india should converse in hindi when they meet? Have you thought of a librarian from south or from far eastern state meeting with the librarian from hindi belt. What language do you think they should converse in, if hindi then why? I guess every one would have the same love for his language. If you say Hindi is the National language,excuse me.. then you have to read the constitution of India which does not specify so, provided 18 indian languages (pls corret if i'm wrong in the no) are given equal status. I guess one should think beyond the borders of such restrictions based on language and have a broader mind and thought, The point Dr. Vyasmoorthy has raised has some substance in it and we should give a thought to it, Ofcourse you have the right to express your opinion, but i think you should not get personnel. Try to take things in a broader sense. Is it not worth giving it a try. I appreciate your love and concern for Hindi language. But please ask your self how many languages these european countries and for that matter any other country have compared to India. And by the way why do you think any two librarians in india should converse in hindi when they meet? Have you thought of a librarian from south or from far eastern state meeting with the librarian from hindi belt. What language do you think they should converse in, if hindi then why?
