Dear professionals, Of course Internet is a medium where authors can put their knowledge in a form that is accessible easily, but the main question remains the same as the authenticity of the source and more important users choice of the source. As a professional my personal experience is that users ask for documents from internet but for the purpose of consultation they always prefer printed material. In our collection we have got more than 200 e-books, but users have always asked for their printed version, they feel more comfortable with that. So Internet will remain a platform for sharing knowledge and easy retrieval of that, but rest all depends on users choice and at the moment they are going for printed documents and driving force will remain users only. Sorry if this has been posted before. Hi, my name is Carlos Vilchez-Roman, head of the Automation Office of the UNMSM Central Library. The Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos is located in Lima, Peru. I am looking for some benchmarks to evaluate the performance of our Integrated Library System (it is called Sabini, an ILS developen in Spain), spe- pecially the OPAC, but I have found nothing in the LIS periodicals such as Computers in Libraries or The Electronic Library. Anoyone knows an article or document (PDF/HTML) related to ILS benchmarks/benchmarking? I mean indicators such as: - Requests per second - Response time - Latency time and so on. Will the internet kill the printed book? More and more books are now being published electronically. Is it just a �passing gimmick� or the emergence of a phenomenon that will gather momentum? E-books are gaining popularity because they obviate the need for writers to place their skills and talents at the mercy of unscrupulous publishers, the cost of production starts from �very little to zero� since there are no production in advance of demand, warehousing and shipment costs � thus eliminating the frustration of not getting their work published and read by a wider public, they offer higher royalties to authors � at least 50% compared to 10-20% for printed books. Friends: Scientists and scholars who publish research papers in refereed journals and who submit research proposals to national and international donor agencies find commercial products such as EndNote, ProCite and Research Manager (all three of them sold by Thomson Group which also publishes Web of Science and Current Contents) very useful. "NASA World Wind" - Innovative, Interesting & very useful for people interested in GIS / Geographical Information

Recently NASA has released "World Wind 1.3" as open source software. World Wind lets you zoom from satellite altitude into any place on Earth. Leveraging Landsat satellite imagery and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data, World Wind lets you experience Earth terrain in visually rich 3D, just as if you were really there. As of now US is well covered with up to one meter resolution, INDIA and many other parts of world have a resolution of 15 meters (its better than having nothing). For US we may even see our cars but for India only up to the nearby village, river and mountain. This is an innovative, really interesting and very useful software for everyone interested in GIS / Geographical information. Broadband connection is recommended to download, as the software is a big 171MB size file. One piece of good news is that we are making progress on automating the generation of metadata. Another piece of good news is that a new study by Leslie Carr and Stevan Harnad based on "two months of submissions for a mature repository" shows that "the amount of time spent entering metadata would be as little as 40 minutes per year for a highly active researcher." Loss of books in Libraries

Dear Colleagues The UGC (India) Library Committee forcefully recommends to write off an inevitable loss @ 2 for every 1000 books issued. However in an open access library, annual loss of 3 volumes for every 1000 issues should be considered as a normal loss in normal circumstances as recommended by Dr. Ranganathan REF: Mittal, R. L. Dear All The Central Library, IIT Bombay has planned to organize a 5-days Training Workshop on ICT for Information Management in S&T Institutions on 16-20 May 2005. The main objective of the workshop is to expose participants to the state-of-the art in library systems and services and how ICT can transform it into a more efficient, knowledge sharing organization facing new challenges and fulfilling aspirations of its users.
