Thanks , I'm also aware of this , BCI Publication alias Book Shoppe from Bangalore also was present in that world book fair. The directory published by National Book Trust during World Bookfair, 2004 has listed all the suppliers, who participated in the fair, along with the names of publishers they represent. Many publishers from US are not represented in India. I wonder whether there is any supplier to import books published by ALA. If there are no authorised stockists or representatives, then postage will be too high as mentioned by Mr.Chandra. Barnes and Noble, whom I met recently in US are willing to supply books to Indian libraries if the business offered is US $5000/- per year. They also offer about 20% discount. We at IGIDR have prepared database of suppliers in the area of social sciencs. Dear Mr. Chandra, The vendors from Bangalore will ask extra charge if the book is brought by courier. I suppose he has mentioned the courier charge. You may please ask him the book should come on ordinary shipment, and not by courier . I'm sure he will not be charging more than $40 rather the vendor would give discount also. Buying foreign books

Dear All, I would like to know the best practices for buying foreign books. Also, who are the top suppliers in India for these books? Recently, I wanted to buy the following book: DDC: Principles and Application, by Louis Main Chan. An OCLC publication, 2004. $40 I understand from one of the vendors that it would cost me $100 to procure this book for me ($40 cost of the book + $60 towards shipment and procurement). I strongly feel that we need to do something to correct this situation. I shall appreciate any pointers/help from members of this list on this point. We should allow all who are likely to = benefit librarians' community and promote (I would not say protect) our = interests. After all we do depend upon vendors for supply of books = periodicals & documents. What is wrong if they join and get to know our = problems, perspectives and feelings? Things might change for the better. There are many occasions in Lis-Forum where requests for sourcing old = books, info on RFID, info on certain software etc came up; I have = forwarded them individually to suitable vendors for action. If library suppliers are part of the forum they could = respond directly to individual's requirements -- if answering via forum = may be looked upon as 'commercial' activity. As we act as intermediaries we have interests of = librarians (as we are librarians) and that of vendors as we are vendors = too. I do not find anything bad, unwelcome, un-holy about commercial = activities. We should shed this inhibition of allowing commercial = fellows into our fold. Government Institutions still have this "Us" and = "they" attitude strongly entrenched in them. This must go. However when = one section of the society tends to unnecessarily exploit the other to = their undue advantage then that has to be checked. This correction will = occur automatically as and when aberrations happen. A variety of institutions = (libraries, information and documentation centres, and other corporate bodies) have = been digitizing documents of various kinds (text, manuscript, and image) on different media. The purpose includes development of databases and/or archival resources, to preserve, access, retrieve and disseminate information and documents. Digitization may also form the basis for = creating products such as learning/teaching packages. A variety of software and techniques are being used. Some of the efforts have been successful = while others have not been so. Nevertheless, many institutions are interested = in digitization, and wish to learn from the experiences of those who have already undertaken digitization. An objective of this Seminar is to = bring together for exchange of ideas those with experience in and those who = have plans for, digitization. Papers are invited on practical experiences and case studies on the following aspects, but not exclusive of other aspects: 1.Use and evaluation of software and techniques for digitization (text, manuscript, image, sound, etc.) 2. Special aspects of digitization for archiving and preservation. 3.Classification, cataloguing and indexing =ADmethods, = tools and techniques. Standards, meta-data, authority files, vocabulary control etc. 4. Searching, retrieval, and user-interfaces. 5. Copyright and other intellectual property issues. 6. Management, economics, and costs. 7. Handling non-Roman Scripts. Authors are requested to focus on practical experiences with = digitization. The final paper should not exceed 5,000 (five thousand) words or 15 = pages including figures, tables and annexes. An extended abstract of about 3-4 pages of the proposed paper should be submitted in advance. It will be refereed. Authors whose proposed papers = are accepted will receive guidelines for preparing the final paper and its submission. 9-11 August 2004 : Seminar and SRELS Lectures.
