It is usually seen that a fresh Blib person needs a large inputs from the practical way of work. However, most of the time he/she learns ( or does not !) while on the job ( which sometimes mean making mistakes and then mending them. This has a dimension of loss of productivity as well. Internship /summer placement makes such learning less burdensome and as they are time-tested, the implementation and improvements are faster and efficient. IGIDR, TIFR, TISS comes to my mind. UGC refresher course for the working librarians can have a faculty from the working professionals. may be we shd discuss this with Univ Librarians abt their experiences/feedback. The directory published by National Book Trust during World Bookfair, 2004 has listed all the suppliers, who participated in the fair, along with the names of publishers they represent. Many publishers from US are not represented in India. I wonder whether there is any supplier to import books published by ALA. If there are no authorised stockists or representatives, then postage will be too high as mentioned by Mr.Chandra. Barnes and Noble, whom I met recently in US are willing to supply books to Indian libraries if the business offered is US $5000/- per year. They also offer about 20% discount. We at IGIDR have prepared database of suppliers in the area of social sciencs.
