Book Club: Is a monthly hobby club, actually. Each month we had a theme- Music; Poetry; Linux; Photography; Gardening. It is calenderized and held in the Board Room. There are presentations; audiovisuals; discussions; all over the premises. Lessons learnt- the event has to be focussed. It has to be approached in all possible ways- means of presentation. It should be attractive and inviting. It is teamwork- not just library effort. One needs to know the users as people & network with them. Don't leave out anyone (it may sound as if one is pestering busy guys...no problem. Unfortunately, quality which at various levels and in various contexts has assumed different shades and nu-ances, has really not been understood, assimilated and internalized at the front end of any enterprise. Quality continues to be a buzzword which is bandied around at seminars and conferences, a status symbol used by Chief Executives of companies, or a distinguishing mark proudly displayed on stationary and signages. So has been with the so called Quality revolution. While the number of compa-nies in sectors ranging from manufacturing to support services, who have acquired the prestigious ISO9000 certi-fication has increased exponentially over the years, the trickling down of quality consciousness to the worker at the shop floor, the salesman in the market place, or the receptionist at the front office has really not taken place. The significance of Quality Management in the knowledge industry needs particular attention. MALA intends to de-mystify the concepts of Total Quality Management and arouse the confidence amongst entry and mid level execu-tives in general and the library professionals in particular, that he os she can play a crucial role in the management of total quality of his/her enterprise. Scope and Objective The proposed one day workshop envisages providing the target group with the necessary background to the evolution and emergence of Total Quality Management (TQM). The beneficiaries of the programme are likely to be but not restricted to Library and Information professionals at entry and mid level positions who have always been curious but too shy to ask about the determinants of Total Quality Management and its effect on not only their day to day professional life, but their future careers as well. Sad demise of Prof.Pangannaya

I was shocked and felt sorry to learn that Prof. Pangannaya expired on 1-10-2006. He was an eminent librarian at Poornaprajna college when I was a student there (1967-69).He was my affectionate teacher in Univ.of mysore in 1971-72. Prof.Pangannaya was a teacher of par excellence, a good dramatist & yakshagana artist. He has efficiently managed his role in K.S.O.S. He was humane in nature and treated his students equally.Prof.Pangannaya's death is a great loss to our Profession. Represented in Ceylon , the London News Chronicle , the London Daily Mail, The Observer , London . He was in charge of TT Maps & Publications Ltd, Chennai. Retired as President of the Company in October 1990, but continued as President Emeritus till 2005. Taught Journalism and Print Production (1972-1997) at the Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, Madras (for Government-recognised diplomas), Anna Technological University and the University of Madras . An office-bearer of the Madras Printers and Lithographers Association, the All India Federation of Master Printers, the Booksellers and Publishers Association of South India, the Federation of Indian Publishers, the Indian Geography Association, the Indian National Cartographic Association and the Public Relations Society of India (Tamil Nadu Chapter), he is also a Co-convener of INTACH Tamil Nadu Chapter. Awarded in March 2002, the MBE by the Queen of England for work on Heritage and Environment Conservation in Madras . Authored 18 books with historical backgrounds mainly on Madras . Mr. Muthiah works as an Information Consultant and freelance editor for various institutions and publishers through his editorial consultancy service, Madras Editorial Services. Since 1991, have edited Madras Musings , a city fortnightly concerned with the Citys heritage and environment.
