FW: Corporate Librarians and special training?
by Aman Jha 01 Dec '08

01 Dec '08

Dear All Last week, I was in an SLA-Asian Chapter conference in Delhi. And one of the sessions was focused on the role of LIS Career and Opportunities. S M Dhawan, former Scientist F, National Physical laboratory, stressed on the three things that would help quality output from the LIS schools in India and one of the key points that he mentioned was lack of 'Best Intake' in this field. He stressed that the profession is still the last career option for many. What is required is that our LIS Schools have to 1) attract best minds in the field and 2) give them best possible training (matching IIT and IIM level). I am sure if these two things are strictly and honestly implemented, the output will be of world class. I have never come across information like LIS departments are training students as corporate librarians. But then yes there is no harm preparing LIS students the way corporations do function. We all know that libraies are always a non-profit institution be it in the corporations. But then nothing is free even in academic libraries. Even if you provide free service to your customer, there is a cost attached to it; for ex: your salary, real estate value, etc. I appreciate what Anita Pujari of DNA has done to the library services by attaching notional value to the information products / service that she provides to her customer. This is the value that she has added for what she does. So, it is the attitude/value/culture that makes corporations better. And I think we must inculcate such values/culture in LIS students. I do agree with what Anand says in terms of skilling the freshers. I WOULD say that there is a big gap in skills we need in the industry [for academic & special libraries and LIS teachers] and the output we get from the LIS schools. Regards, Aman Jha Deputy Director - Library Confederation of Indian Industry 249-F, Sector 18, Udyog Vihar, Phase IV Gurgaon - 122 015, Haryana, INDIA Tel: 91-124-4014060-67 Fax: 91-124-4014080 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------- From: [mailto:lis-forum-bounces@ncsi.iisc.ernet.in] On Behalf Of Byrappa, Ananda (GE, Research) Sent: Wednesday, November 26, 2008 2:30 PM To: lis-forum(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in Subject: Re: [LIS-Forum] Corporate Librarians and special training? (vasanthraj) LIS Schools are thinking about training students for the corporate needs...Is there a big difference between a special library and a corporate library? As many LIS schools offer a specialization in Special Libraries, there may not be a big need for focussing on Corporate Libraries at university level unless ther is a plan for corporate spnoncered/collaboarative effort. Many LIS schools are putting their best efforts in training the students. However, the fact is, there is a big gap in skills we need in the industry and the output we get from the LIS schools. Syllabus is always attractive but often we fail to see the learnings out of it when we interview the students. Many practising LIS professionals know that, we need to teach and train on almost everything to people we recruit. Sometimes, we end up recruiting non LIS people for jobs other than core LIS jobs like classification etc. Majority of the students fail to understand how corporate libraries function. The reasons may be many: - Lack of trained and experienced teachers - Limited/No infrastructure - Lack of cooperation from practicing librarians - Kind of students opting for LIS and - LIS Schools not having enough collaboration with Libraries Its unfortunate that we have this big gap in our profession unlike in other professions - medicine, nursing etc. More open, genuine and collaborative efforts in bridging the gap between theory and practice is required. Teachers and LIS practioners should have more (healthy) debates, discussions and must develop willingness to collaborate for the proposperity of this profession. To: lis-forum(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in Dear sir/madam, This is in response to the LIS-Forum member request to suggest on how LIS departments can train Corporate Librarians? Though my response would not offer any suggestion, but contradicts with the postings itself. - How can LIS departments prepare corporate librarians? ?I am deliberating on the issue why there is much fuss about corporate world. ?Library Science and Information Science (Information Studies-Including wide spectrum of behavioral theories, science and technology) Schools have been training LIS professionals to perform their duties irrespective of the organization they aspire to work.? It was not previously discussed so much about academic library or public library. But we have been making our graduates to be a perfect fit to a corporate world. Again these all have been become forefront in the light of globalization. ?Corporate venture have very strong financial back up to train their workers and they have been successful doing that over the years (Infosys global training centre). Today?s need is to prepare our graduates to work for the people from whom they have got benefitted (local tax payers). ? Andhara Pradesh itself is a naxal prone area with so much of economic inequalities, let our graduate take step in reducing the economic barrier and fill the gap of information rich and poor. There we need training and enrich our people. ? Globalization itself has become a halt, because of recent economics meltdown in US. Economists? likes of Joseph Stiglitz and Paul Krugman have propagating the humanistic economic policy with equal opportunity for every one.? Coming back to the topic ? LIS schools have leveraging the technology and new crop of Information schools are in a way modeled to survive in the information rich world. Syllabuses of some of the information schools can throw some lights on how LIS schools can tune their curriculum to prepare their graduates in the 21st century.? Good thing is that library school basics have not changed lot-then why LIS departments prepare corporate librarians. Holistic approach is the need of the hour. ------------------------- With best wishes Vasantha Raju N Govt First Grade College Periyapatna Mysore Dist. Excellence in Library Profession

Dear All, Shri K P Sadasivan has put forth a fantabulous framework for bringing excellence gradually into fore in the library field. It is a very good piece to start a proactive discussion on the status or magnitude of the ills mentioned by him, the possible options for revival and the strategic steps the fellow professionals or a cohesive group can take to cure the ills. It seems that one cannot find anything in the piece to disagree with. I propose that he should work out the practical ways, to bell the cat, with an action plan. RSSMicro - Dedicated RSS Feed Search Engine
by sandeep bhavsar 01 Dec '08

01 Dec '08

Respected All http://www.rssmicro.com/ The most comprehensive RSS feed search on the web that searches 4.3 million RSS, feeds RSSMicro was formed to explore new search capabilities where the web contents become extremely dynamic and grow exponentially. This behavior, along with higher user expectations, creates a dilemma that requires a search service whose capabilities go beyond the limits of conventional search engines. Without new data formats or attached date and time to the content, there will be no reliable search service or product that can efficiently index and make the content available for search. RSSMicro is building and exploring a new search service which balances the freshness, relevance, and reliability of the search results along with a substantial gain in search performance and efficiency. Re: [LIS-Forum] Self learning of Drupal, Wiki Moodle etc

Date: Fri, 28 Nov 2008 17:37:24 +0530 From: "Byrappa, Ananda (GE, Research)" <ananda.byrappa(a)ge.com> Dear Rajasekharan, NCSI-Net (Association of NCSI Staff and Students) is glad to hear that the recently held TBR memorial seminar on Web Content Management (Drupal focused) was useful to you. Many LIS professionals may be interested in knowing how NCSI net is doing these hands-on and effective one day programmes since last 4 years. Objective of these seminars are to enable budding LIS professionals to use the tools and resources (mainly open source) and motivate them to make a better impact at the organization where they work. We choose workshop/seminar resource persons from preferably from NCSI Net, working across the industry. This helps us to make these programmes truly practical and one or two case studies will add to the impact. The programme will also have a session dealing with career building strategies and job opportunities for LIS professionals - which has been greatly appreciated by the participants. Seminar presentations and summary can be accessed from the NCSI-Net portal: http://ncsi-net.ncsi.iisc.ernet.in/workshop/ <http://ncsi-net.ncsi.iisc.ernet.in/workshop/> Regards, Anand Ananda T.Byrappa Manager, Whitney Knowledge Centre GE India Technology Centre 122, EPIP, Phase 2, Whitefield Road, Bangalore - 560066, INDIA Phone: 91-80-25032618 Fax: 91-80-28412114 email: ananda.byrappa(a)ge.com From: lis-forum-bounces(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in [mailto:lis-forum-bounces@ncsi.iisc.ernet.in] On Behalf Of Rajan Sent: 27 November 2008 18:05 To: Lis Forum Subject: [LIS-Forum] Self learning of Drupal, Wiki Moodle etc Dear All, The recent Drupal workshop at NCSI was a meaningful attempt to capacitate librarians in opening new ways of information dissemination with a good content management tool. Libraries or institutions having local area network (LAN) can think of using Drupal (or Joomla or similar one) for creating an intranet website that provides information content to the institutional users through a website- like a gateway. Drupal requires apache, mysql & php software - all installed and configured in the computer. The configuration of those software may fail at times. So the easier option for a beginner is to use Xampp software that includes all the three software. So any beginner who is interested to learn Drupal can do so by installing it even in a client computer by using Xampp. The advantage of the content Management System is that we can have local language content and can make search /retrieval, if the information is in Unicode font. By using the same Xampp installation, one can install Wiki software also in the same computer and can develop an internal Wikipedia for creation of frequently used local content for internal users. Even reading materials on key topics can be made available in LAN by using internal Wiki. Media Wiki is a reasonable choice among a wide range of Wiki software available for download. Having an internal Wiki may help the users in learning the process of editing the content in Wikipedia. So the creative users may eventually turn themselves as contributors of Wikipedia, the fastest growing segment in the digital world. Librarians, thus, can have partnership in building the knowledge repository by showing the users a method to build digital knowledge resource. Moodle is an E-Course Management software one can install in the same computer by using the same Xampp installation. Libraries can use it for offering compensatory or additional courses on topics of special interest among the users, with the help of library friendly academics or library professionals themselves. The screenshots of Moodle installation on Windows is available at http://docs.moodle.org/en/Windows_installation_using_XAMPP <http://docs.moodle.org/en/Windows_installation_using_XAMPP> Installation on Linux is also similar. The installation of Drupal or Wiki can be done in the similar manner. Open Journal System is yet another similar tool, the librarians should look into. Exploring all these tools will be a way ahead in empowerment in this bewildering digital world. LIS EDUCATION VIS-A-VIS CORPORATE LIBRARIANS
by Sadasivan KP 30 Nov '08

30 Nov '08

Dear All, This is in response to the recent postings on the above subject matter. The Problems 1. There is a widening gap between the demand and supply of really competent LIS professionals in our country, irrespective of the nature of institutions where they are expected to perform. Corporate sector is undoubtedly one such area with tremendous job potential. 2. But sadly, majority of the products of LIS Schools are mediocre in nature ! Few exceptions are always there from any School or most of the products are OK from a very very few Schools. 3. There are several factors contributing to this lamentable situation. They include : (a) Poor standard of the students joining for the LIS Course (b) Out of date Syllabus followed in the LIS Schools (c) Inadequate infrastructure facilities in the Schools (d) Incompetent Teachers or Teachers who do not bother to update their knowledge base (e) Reluctance of LIS Schools for proper interactive programmes with performing libraries & librarians (f) Poor communication skills and leadership qualities among the students (g) Lack of commitment of students in accepting LIS as a good profession. They, instead, consider it as a short cut to get a job. Etc., etc. Well, the above listing is only selective. The Solutions 3. The solutions are partly embedded in the problems listed above. But still, let me repeat a few : (a) There is an immediate need for restructuring the LIS Syllabus uniformly across the country. The exercise should not just be confined to NCSI or NISCAIR or DRTC or a handful of Universities, like, University of Mysore, Madras University, etc. Rather, these front-runners (and other stake holders too) should think of initiating a dialogue for a commonly acceptable quality/standard syllabus for all Schools in the country, in the larger interest of the profession. (b) Poor communication skills & leadership qualities of students constitute a major issue. Unless this is effectively resolved, we are not going to succeed in generating competent professionals. The course-ware , the methods of teaching and grading of results/scores should not, at all ignore these factors. Not much seriousness is attributed to the so called 'Soft Skill Development' among our young professionals at present. (c) Making them IT-savvy is another essential ingredient. (d) How to attract really brilliant students to this course is another big question. Career prospects is perhaps one aspect. We must evolve a proper assessment of the market-needs of our professionals. Then mould them appropriately, by complying with other curriculum-related issues (discussed earlier). An explicit outcome should be a mechanism for Assured Placement after their course of study. 4. We, the professionals by and large are lured to concentrate in segmented areas as part of our modernization. It could be anything like CDS/ISIS, WINISIS, Digital Libraries with its fragmented approaches, IR, Webopac, OAI, E-Print, DSpace, etc., if we examine the chronological events. But what is lacking is a Total Framework encompassing all these segments and much more, so as to make it as a body of knowledge for LIS Education & Practice. This has to be planned and designed at a fairly 'higher level' so as to implement the same uniformly and mandatorily as learning modules in the academic programmes. 5. Now, the question of Corporate Librarians. The existing teaching-learning practices and the curriculum contents should invariably be changed to suit the special needs of the sector, which is diffrent from the conventional systems. Rigorous training in soft-skill development and management practices, etc., are needed for moulding them to perform proactively in the newgen LIS domain. Be it 'old bottle or new bottle', it has to be filled with 'new wine' . 6. But who will bell the cat? Possibly a selfless 'Think Tank Group' should evolve for initiating the task. Even a 'Social Network' for the purpose can trigger the operation. Then it will assume the inertial strength required for the 'take off'. 7. A mandatory mechanism for LIS domain, like Medical Council of India in the Health Education Sector, Bar Council of India in the Legal Sector, AICTE for Engineering / Technical Education, etc., has to be evolved for a proper co-ordination to ensure quality education. 8. Responsible Professional Societies in LIS in India including IATLIS cannot shy away from this crisis situation. 9.Certain recommendations of NKC may also be examined in this context. The Time Targets Well, an overnight solution is not possible. What is proposed is a long term strategy. But the time factor should not be stretched to infinity, if we really want to salvage our profession and give it an impressive and acceptable shape. It is high time to evolve strategies for revamping the LIS Education / Profession in India so as to Seek the comments of our esteemed LIS Forum Members. SADASIVAN KP Former Head, Library & Informatics and Former Consultant (ICT) NIIST (CSIR), Trivadrum Poor management and communication skills among the students/products. -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
