Publication of practical guide to computer recycling
by Puna Das 27 Nov '08

27 Nov '08

Publication of practical guide to computer recycling UNESCO is launching a free practical guide to computer recycling for entrepreneurs and project sponsors, on the occasion of a conference on Digital Solidarity being held in Lyon (France). UNESCO’s partners in this project are the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME), French consultants Tic Ethic, non-governmental organizations, Emmaüs Solidarité Ouagadougou and Ateliers du Bocage, along with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The publication of this guide comes amidst growing concern over the impact computer equipment waste on health and environment. According to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the Gartner consultancy, there will be almost 4 billion mobile telephones in use by the end of this year, while the number of personal computers has already passed the billion mark. The good news behind these figures is that the digital divide is shrinking - 58% of computers are in developed countries but, this share is expected to drop to 30% by 2014 when the total number of personal computers should reach two billion. But there is another side to the coin: this year, almost 180 million computers have been replaced by new machines, and an estimated 35 million computers dumped, despite the toxic substances they contain. The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Computer Recycling is published in English, and will soon also be available in French. The purpose of the guide is to help develop the skills required to handle the growing flux of waste generated by the market for new and used computers so as to protect the environment and public health. This global problem particularly affects developing countries. The project also aims to support the emergence of new business opportunities. It should prove useful for NGOs and local development stakeholders in fostering small and micro entrepreneurships. In addition, the open license of the guidebook will allow interested parties to create versions adapted to local conditions and particular contexts. The guidebook, which can be downloaded free of charge (www.ticethic.com/guide) will be supplemented by an operational module containing an inventory of waste recycling processes, practical advice and case studies from recycling plants in Burkina Faso, France and India. Reuse of obsolete or unwanted IT and computer equipment is the preferred option, rather than destruction. It allows other users to benefit from the equipment at low cost, extends the return on energy and resources used in manufacturing the products and reduces the quantity of devices entering the waste stream. Reuse may require repair, refurbishment or upgrade. Equipment and components not fit for reuse should be disassembled and processed to recover raw materials in an environmentally sound manner. PCs contain valuable ferrous (e.g. iron), non-ferrous (e.g. aluminium and copper) and precious metals, such as gold, palladium, silver, indium and gallium that can be retrieved. The rising value of raw materials makes recycling more economically viable and attractive. Internet support will soon be available with a forum on which entrepreneurs will be able to discuss their experiences. Considering that the number of PCs used in China, for example, is expected to rise from 55 million in 2007 to half a billion in 2015, there should be much to discuss. Training for corporate librarianship
by Prabhash N. Rath 27 Nov '08

27 Nov '08

Mr. Byrappa has put up very nicely about the problems faced by LIS departments in their pursuit for providing good training to students. In our country, the problem is that we have a tendency not to take up a holistic view of the entire scenario. Mr. Vasanth Raj is right that there is no need of any special training for corporate librarianship (at least not as part of the syllabus). A person having sufficient knowledge of IT and good communication skills can well be fit to be a corporate librarian. The same applies to any library now-a-days, and we should not have an image of bespectacled dumb fellow as librarian of a public library. So the basic thing is personality development which again depends on individual teachers. Why LIS schools can't give stress on personality development in the way business schools do? Re: [LIS-Forum] Corporate Librarians and special training? (vasanth raj)
by Byrappa, Ananda (GE, Research) 26 Nov '08

26 Nov '08

LIS Schools are thinking about training students for the corporate needs...Is there a big difference between a special library and a corporate library? As many LIS schools offer a specialization in Special Libraries, there may not be a big need for focussing on Corporate Libraries at university level unless ther is a plan for corporate spnoncered/collaboarative effort. Many LIS schools are putting their best efforts in training the students. However, the fact is, there is a big gap in skills we need in the industry and the output we get from the LIS schools. Syllabus is always attractive but often we fail to see the learnings out of it when we interview the students. Many practising LIS professionals know that, we need to teach and train on almost everything to people we recruit. Sometimes, we end up recruiting non LIS people for jobs other than core LIS jobs like classification etc. Majority of the students fail to understand how corporate libraries function. The reasons may be many: - Lack of trained and experienced teachers - Limited/No infrastructure - Lack of cooperation from practicing librarians - Kind of students opting for LIS and - LIS Schools not having enough collaboration with Libraries Its unfortunate that we have this big gap in our profession unlike in other professions - medicine, nursing etc. More open, genuine and collaborative efforts in bridging the gap between theory and practice is required. Teachers and LIS practioners should have more (healthy) debates, discussions and must develop willingness to collaborate for the proposperity of this profession. To: lis-forum(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in Message-ID: <246216.69167.qm(a)web95301.mail.in2.yahoo.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Dear sir/madam, This is in response to the LIS-Forum member request to suggest on how LIS departments can train Corporate Librarians? Though my response would not offer any suggestion, but contradicts with the postings itself. - How can LIS departments prepare corporate librarians? ?I am deliberating on the issue why there is much fuss about corporate world. ?Library Science and Information Science (Information Studies-Including wide spectrum of behavioral theories, science and technology) Schools have been training LIS professionals to perform their duties irrespective of the organization they aspire to work.? It was not previously discussed so much about academic library or public library. But we have been making our graduates to be a perfect fit to a corporate world. Again these all have been become forefront in the light of globalization. ?Corporate venture have very strong financial back up to train their workers and they have been successful doing that over the years (Infosys global training centre). Today?s need is to prepare our graduates to work for the people from whom they have got benefitted (local tax payers). ? Andhara Pradesh itself is a naxal prone area with so much of economic inequalities, let our graduate take step in reducing the economic barrier and fill the gap of information rich and poor. There we need training and enrich our people. ? Globalization itself has become a halt, because of recent economics meltdown in US. Economists? likes of Joseph Stiglitz and Paul Krugman have propagating the humanistic economic policy with equal opportunity for every one.? Coming back to the topic ? LIS schools have leveraging the technology and new crop of Information schools are in a way modeled to survive in the information rich world. Syllabuses of some of the information schools can throw some lights on how LIS schools can tune their curriculum to prepare their graduates in the 21st century.? Good thing is that library school basics have not changed lot-then why LIS departments prepare corporate librarians. Holistic approach is the need of the hour. ------------------------- With best wishes Vasantha Raju N Govt First Grade College Periyapatna Mysore Dist. ? Add more friends to your messenger and enjoy!
