The main campus of National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) Goa, India is located on a promontory between the mouths of these two estuaries. This proximity attracted the scientific community to these estuaries, and the availability of funding to study them owing to their being the "lifelines of Goa" has led to their becoming, almost certainly, the best studied estuaries of India. IIT-Kharagpur top tech college in India: Survey Wednesday, 20 June , 2007, 08:08 New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, in West Bengal is the top technology and engineering college of the country, edging out IIT-Madras which held the position last year, a survey said on Tuesday. According to the survey by Dataquest, a technology magazine in India, and International Data Corporation (IDC), a US-headquartered research firm, the seven IITs have bagged the top seven positions. IIT-Kharagpur climbed two places to the first slot. The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal, has stormed into the top 10 list for the first time. While IIT-Madras has slipped from the top slot to second position, IIT-Bombay climbed two spots to occupy the third slot. The premier IIT-Delhi had slid to fourth from No 2 last year, while IIT-Roorkee has jumped two places to fifth spot. IIT-Guwahati is ranked sixth, while IIT-Kanpur is surprisingly the last in the rung of IITs at seventh spot. Describing the National Institute of Technology (formerly, Regional Engineering College) Warangal, being in the top 10, the study said that for the "first time, a second-rung school broke into the Top 10 list". It was at number eight, up four notches from last year. While Indian Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, bagged the ninth spot, Institute of Technology of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) was at 10th spot. Dataquest and IDC had surveyed 117 top technology and engineering colleges of the country. The ranks were awarded based on composite scores arrived on the basis of parameters like placements, infrastructure, academic environment, industry interface and HR perception. The survey found that over one-third of the engineering students from the top 100 engineering colleges were recruited by IT companies in 2007. The number of students employed on campus rose to 87 percent this year against 72 percent last year. The survey underlined the growth of second-tier engineering schools - six NITs formerly known as Regional Engineering Colleges (REC) have entered the Top 20 list. Of these, NIT-Hamirpur (Himachal Pradesh) showed the most remarkable progress, moving up 14 places to rank 20. The survey attributes the rise of NIT-Hamirpur to a marked improvement in every parameter like increase in the number of IT companies visiting the campus for placements and average number of research papers. NIT-Calicut (Kerala), NIT-Kurukshetra (Haryana) and IIIT-Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh) registered the highest growth in terms of companies visiting campuses for placements. Over 22 technology schools have shown a shift of more than 10 positions. Private institutes increased their placement performance to 75 percent from 60 percent last year. The survey found that private institutes are lacking in the number of faculty members with a PhD, which it said was as low as 21 percent compared to NITs (64 percent) and IITs (94 percent). The survey underlined that in 2007 the average annual salary has gone up by 28 percent to Rs 341,000 from Rs 266,000 in 2006. A few simple guidelines for LIS-Forum etiquette

Dear Member: I would like to draw your attention and also seek your cooperation in ensuring that the following basic guidelines are adhered to while posting a message or taking part in a discussion on the LIS-Forum. I have been wanting to bring this to your attention for a while now but somehow couldn't do so. In fact, I have been writing individually to several members who are active on the list to pay attention to some basic guidelines of any discussion list etiquette. The points mentioned below and a few other points, covering the basic rules and guidelines for our discussion list, will be included in the confirmatory mail that is sent to all new registrations and also in the monthly reminders that the list sends to all the members. This way, the members will be reminded of most essential dos and don'ts of this list. 1. Almost every posting / message meant for distribution is received as multiple parts, which means that such mails contain attachments apart from the actual content. When the mails with such attachments are opened, they will typically appear as shown below, Parts/Attachments: 1.1 OK 33 lines Text (charset: ISO-8859-1) 1.2 Shown 10 lines Text (charset: ISO-8859-1) 2 Shown 4 lines Text ---------------------------------------- Although mails with above type of attachments are harmless, such attachments can be easily avoided by ensuring that your e-mail client software (used for reading and sending e-mails) is set to send mails in plain text. Sending mails in plain text format will reduce the size of the mails. This reduction will be to the extent of about few hundred bytes. However, if you take into consideration that there are close to 3000 members on this list and on an average, 2/3 messages are circulated each working day then the reduction of size of each mail to LIS-Forum even to the extent of few hundred bytes will be quite significant. So, please do ensure that messages meant for LIS-Forum are in plain text format only. Sending mails in plain text format is quite simple. By default, your mail client may be composing messages as color and graphics. This needs to be changed to compose messages as plain text. This change can be done in the general preferences of your mail client. As a policy, mails with non textual attachments (.doc / PDF etc) are discarded. 2. Whenever a discussion takes place, members who are responding to the earlier mails should include only a portion of the mail in their replies and the inclusion should be at the top. This will enable the readers to easily follow the discussion. What is happening now is that the replies come at the top followed by the full length original mail. Many a times the entire digest is included in the replies. This not only makes the discussion difficult to follow but it also increases the size of the mail substantially. 3. Although the forum is meant for discussing issues related to LIS and related fields, occasionally, it could also be used for seeking help / guidance / suggestions from the fellow members. While doing so, please do ensure that sufficient background details provided about the query and adequate effort has been made to find solution for the problem at hand. In other words, the forum should be used only as the last resort. 4. Every posting should include complete signature. Thanks for your cooperation. - Moderator

Yahoo Groups Servers behave erratically

Dear Friends I am having serious doubts about the quality of service from Yahoo Groups Servers. Too many complaints are coming nowadays. Members who have been invited are unable to sign up. Members who have been approved do not start getting messages. Members who have unsubscribed continue to get messages. The subscriber count on the home page of the group website does not get updated properly. Many straightforward messages are treated as SPAM. Many members experience their messages bouncing. Many messages do not get circulated. Yahoo.co.in mailing system is most faulty I have observed. This is the problem of FREE services -- No guarantee of performance. I have been trying my best to sort out issues but not progress could be made. I have consulted / searched the Yahoo Webmasters Forum & the Yahoo team as well. Please do bring to my notice if you suspect problems of getting or sending messages. PLEASE ALSO TELL ME if you know any workarounds. The last is possibly the most difficult element to handle. This talk will focus on why librarians need to be prepared for change, and also touch upon how to develop Knowledge, Skills and Desire to change. The challenges go beyond those needed from Information Professionals. For such professionals to make their mark in the job market, there is a lot of awareness promotion, marketing and relationship building that will be needed. About the Speaker : Vasumathi Sriganesh got her B.Sc degree in Home-Science in 1977. Married immediately, she was a homemaker for 12 years after which she did her BLIS from the Bombay University in 1989-90. Later she did her MLIS through IGNOU in the years 1997-99. She has worked in three libraries - Indian Institute of Geomagnetism, The Hinduja Hospital and HELP (Health Education Library for People), all in Mumbai. In both medical libraries she was instrumental in the entire computerization, as well as starting off literature search services and Internet based activities. Medicine was always her passion and she found deep satisfaction in Medical Librarianship. Dear Professionals: As part of ongoing project, Development of OAI-based Institutional Repository Services in India, sponsored by Department of Scientific and Industrial research, Ministry of Science and technology, Govt. of India, the National Centre for Science Information (NCSI), Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, will be conducting a training workshop on "Building Institutional Repositories using GNU EPrints", during 25-27 July 2007. The main focus of the workshop will be to provide an intensive practical training to the participants to setup and maintain their Institutional Repositories (IR) using the latest version of "GNU EPrints.org" software. The workshop is being conducted to encourage research institutes, universities and R&D organizations to setup their interoperable IRs. The institutions/organizations are encouraged to depute appropriate persons who will be in a position to take advantage of the training to set up and operate institutional repositories in their respective institutions. Participation from Institutions/Organizations with a large S&T/R&D activity, larger research output, regular publications and interaction meets would be desirable. Workshop Fees: No registration fee will be charged from the participant. A maximum of 20 participants will be taken for the workshop. Blackle: The eco-friendly alternative to Google!

A few months ago, TreeHugger Mark Ontkush wrote a post on his blog EcoIron titled Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year. The post lays out the following train of thought. "An all white web page uses about 74 watts to display, while an all black page uses only 59 watts." Google, which has a white background and gets about "200 million queries a day" could reduce global energy use by 750 Megawatt-hours a year by simply changing the color of its homepage to black. In response to this post a black version of Google emerged called Blackle.com According to Blackle's homepage at publication time, 4,408.917 Watt hours have been saved by . Nice ideas.
