SUBMISSION OF PAPERS Working papers based on research work, case studies and implementation of new and novel ideas, methods and services are invited. The papers will be reviewed by the editorial committee. Selected papers will be included in the conference proceedings and also published in SALIS journals. The decision of the editorial committee regarding the acceptance of the paper for presentation will be final. The editorial committee has right to accept or reject a paper based on the recommendation of the editorial committee. GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION OF PAPERS Authors are requested to submit the soft copy of full paper (with abstract not exceeding 200 words and at least three keywords) on CD and an e-mail attachment to the organizing secretary. Paper should not exceed 8 pages of A4 size with double line spacing and font size 12 in Times New Roman. Charts, graphs, photographs, if any, should be inserted at proper places in the paper. References should be given as per the Chicago Style. Authors are advised not to include downloaded materials and figures from the Internet. A declaration by the author(s) should be given separately stating that the paper has not been presented/ published elsewhere. The course is designed for online journalists seeking to broaden their multimedia and social media skills, and journalists working in print or broadcast media who are making a transition to online multimedia journalism, yet already have a solid working knowledge of online platforms such as blogs and regularly use social media. The course seeks to not only harness current Web 2.0 tools, but also show participants how they can adapt in an era of fast-paced digital development in journalism and move beyond Web 2.0. The course strongly focuses on practical training in parallel with building upon the prior online journalism and digital knowledge of participants. Sir/Madam, This is Librarian, of a National Inst, working at H Q, under Central Govt. wish to know the responsibility of a Librarian in case of loss of books where he is not personally involved, nor dishonest, nor benefited directly or indirectly, but mere as a Head of the Library. Whether cost of loss of books is to be recovered from his salary by holding him personally responsible though Library is a team work. I s there any court judgement ruling is available if so please give me a ref. and other authentic supporting documents ref. will also do, other than General Financial Rules which are out dated in terms of financial criteria. Our library have major collection of foreign publications and cost per book is much higher than mentioned in GFR Thank you ! The details of the lecture are given below: Title: “Why are our readers not using Learning Objects?” Speaker: Prof. Srinivasa Ramani International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore Date: Friday, 4th June, 2010 Time: 6.00 PM (Coffee/Tea: 5.30 PM onwards) Venue: NCSI Seminar Hall, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore Dr. S. Venkadesan, Librarian, JRD Tata Memorial Library, IISc, will preside over the talk. Description about the Talk: The term “Learning Objects” had been inspired partly by the vision of object oriented programming. Learning content in various forms, bundled with code as necessary, and packaged in a standard form, were expected to be “objects” that could be reused in multiple contexts easily. However, many deviated from this vision over the course of time, and were willing to accept the definition of a Learning Object (LO) as a resource, usually digital and web-based, that can be used and re-used to support learning. The multimedia, hypertext and interactivity dimensions of such resources stimulated a lot of work. We can look at the LO movement as a part of the Open Educational Resources movement – one of the early drivers of the Web 2.0 phenomenon. Most authors who wished to promote the reuse of their creation were putting their LOs into the public domain. The increasing use of web based material for learning in a variety of contexts and the enormous growth of content on the Web makes LOs an important topic for the attention of everyone in the professions associated with information delivery. Visionaries in the field recognized the importance of metadata and standardization, and for a time, discussion of metadata standards for LO’s was a necessary component of conferences. We will look at what happened to the promise of easy and systematic search for LOs. Most visions do not predict the future any better than weather forecasts, but they do enable concerted attacks to be mounted on important problems. Some of the current visions deal with two insights: a) Locating and using content on the Web would be a lot easier and satisfactory if the systems used have relevant information about the user and personalize their efforts to help the user in the best possible manner. b) The forms of education in wide use need to be changed dramatically. The future school will not resemble the schools we all went to. The Web will change all that. All of us concerned with the creation, management and delivery of information content need to give attention to information designed to promote serious learning. The fact that we are all continuing to learn, much after our leaving college, is an indication relevant to the future of education. Given the significance of the software the workshop is aimed to sensitize and encourage the LIS Professionals to build digital libraries and repositories. The thrust is to provide practical training to the participants in building digital library collections and deliberate over issues of allied areas.It will also facilitate interaction between experts and participants to bridge the knowledge gap and initiate capacity building activities. The details of the lecture are given below: Title: “Why are our readers not using Learning Objects?” Speaker: Prof. Srinivasa Ramani International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore Date: Friday, 4th June, 2010 Time: 6.00 PM (Coffee/Tea: 5.30 PM onwards) Venue: NCSI Seminar Hall, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore Description about the Talk: The term “Learning Objects” had been inspired partly by the vision of object oriented programming. Learning content in various forms, bundled with code as necessary, and packaged in a standard form, were expected to be “objects” that could be reused in multiple contexts easily. However, many deviated from this vision over the course of time, and were willing to accept the definition of a Learning Object (LO) as a resource, usually digital and web-based, that can be used and re-used to support learning. The multimedia, hypertext and interactivity dimensions of such resources stimulated a lot of work. We can look at the LO movement as a part of the Open Educational Resources movement – one of the early drivers of the Web 2.0 phenomenon. Most authors who wished to promote the reuse of their creation were putting their LOs into the public domain. The increasing use of web based material for learning in a variety of contexts and the enormous growth of content on the Web makes LOs an important topic for the attention of everyone in the professions associated with information delivery. Visionaries in the field recognized the importance of metadata and standardization, and for a time, discussion of metadata standards for LO’s was a necessary component of conferences. We will look at what happened to the promise of easy and systematic search for LOs. Most visions do not predict the future any better than weather forecasts, but they do enable concerted attacks to be mounted on important problems. Some of the current visions deal with two insights: a) Locating and using content on the Web would be a lot easier and satisfactory if the systems used have relevant information about the user and personalize their efforts to help the user in the best possible manner. b) The forms of education in wide use need to be changed dramatically. The future school will not resemble the schools we all went to. The Web will change all that. All of us concerned with the creation, management and delivery of information content need to give attention to information designed to promote serious learning. The fact that we are all continuing to learn, much after our leaving college, is an indication relevant to the future of education. Just Published - "Towards inclusive knowledge societies: a review of UNESCO's action in implementing the WSIS outcomes" This report reviews the UNESCO's work in these implementation areas during the five years since the Tunis phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in 2005. It summarises some highlights of what has been achieved to date and reflects upon the challenges which have arisen in the implementation of WSIS outcomes. The report looks in turn at UNESCO's three main roles in WSIS implementation: - as a coordinator/lead facilitator, with ITU, UNDP and UNCTAD, of the overall implementation process, including UNGIS and the WSIS Forum; - as a facilitator of six Action Lines to facilitate the implementation of the WSIS outcomes in specific areas of work; and - as an implementer of programmes and initiatives that seek to build inclusive Knowledge Societies and thereby contribute to the achievement of WSIS goals. The final section of the report looks forward over the next five years to suggest ways in which implementation of WSIS results might be more effectively integrated in the broader work that UNESCO and other agencies are doing. This work aims at achieving the benefits that can be derived from the Knowledge Societies to whose development UNESCO is committed.
