Hello everyone, I wanted to share an opportunity to give some input to the ReALM <https://www.oclc.org/realm/home.html> project about your organization's experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's a brief message from the ReALM Project Director: "The REALM team has conducted a landscape scan of existing toolkits available to LAMs. Using this list, we’ve developed a form to gather information about how well crisis management information you currently have meets your needs. This feedback will help prevent duplication of resources and identify the high-priority information gaps to address. Below is a link to a completely voluntary, web-based form related to the possible content areas of the toolkit. *We would greatly appreciate 10 minutes of your time to complete the form based on you and your organization’s experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. If you choose to participate, please complete the form by Friday, December 3. *The OMB Control Number for this information collection is 3137-0081, in accordance with 5 CFR 1320.5(b) <https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-5/chapter-III/subchapter-B/part-1320>. *Link to Google form:* https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd3axi_BVQQ3oLvflOHTwg2a7P5U70ONEW… For each topic listed, we’re asking if *your institution or organization* already has what it needs, needs more information, or needs better information. We also ask you to flag those topics you recommend as a priority area for the toolkit. Our toolkit editors will use your feedback to make internal decisions and investments creating the toolkit. The results will not be disseminated to the public. Thank you for your time and input! With kindest regards, Sharon REALM Project Director, OCLC" Please feel free to share with relevant offices/members in your organizations. UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science to member countries was adopted at its 41st session, in November 2021
by Dr. J. K. Vijayakumar 28 Nov '21

28 Nov '21

The UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science was adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO at its 41st session, in November 2021. "UNESCO Recommendations are legal instruments in which “the General Conference formulates principles and norms for the international regulation of any particular question and invites the Member States to take whatever legislative or other steps may be required in conformity with the constitutional practice of each State and the nature of the question under consideration to apply the principles and norms aforesaid within their respective territories”. Emanating from the Organization's supreme governing body and hence possessing great authority, recommendations are intended to influence the development of national laws and practices." Download the full-text from https://unesdoc.unesco.org/ark:/48223/pf0000379949.locale=en Watch a short video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3Wkvx_ZaFo It will be a game-changer, as open science regulations will have to be stipulated by the member countries through their national bodies, funders and regulators, including necessary legislative steps, towards open access, open data, open-source, open education, open peer review, open evaluation, citizen science, etc and bringing openness to the full research life cycle. It is a welcome stand taken by DST (Government of India) who included open science in their draft S&T recommendations and other departments/commissions would be asked to follow. ---------- Dr. J. K. Interesting post 28 Things Only People Who Love Books Would Understand 1. The unparalleled satisfaction that comes with organizing your bookshelf. 2. The endless lists of books to read next you keep on your computer and phone. 3. The inability to watch a movie without mentally (or, to everyone’s pleasure, vocally) comparing it to the book. 4. That tantalizing smell of a new book. 5. Having every surface in your house covered in books. You may like to read this short interview in Publishers Weekly more than a year and a half ago: https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/libraries/articl… At least in the US, the answer is 'yes,' says Tim Coates, but it is not because people no longer want to read—they want that just as much as they ever did, particularly in print. Study of Cold war India - Online resources survey
by Padmanabha Vyasamoorthy 19 Nov '21

Here is an interesting, exhaustive survey of online resources. https://www.wilsoncenter.org/blog-post/online-source-primer-study-cold-war-… ///Wilson Center: An Online Source Primer for the Study of Cold War India. "During the past year, the National Archives of India was beset by questions of reorganization, access, and the effects these issues would have on writing histories of India. As the National Archives and the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library came under scrutiny for ongoing renovations, historians of India began to look elsewhere for archival sources; given the ongoing pandemic, our attention shifted to digitized documents primarily of post-1947 government archives.... I have previously written about the newly launched database Ideas of India, an archive of pre- and post-colonial Indian periodicals. The following is a discussion of archives focused less on the socio-cultural space and more on official documents issued by various government ministries."/// Dr P Vyasamoorthy / 9490804278 -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Ely’s new cathedral (of books) opens for business

Ely’s new cathedral (of books) opens for business The picture shows the book racks at the £17m Library Storage Facility (LSF) of Cambridge University Library at Ely opened in 2018. Each row of shelving reaches a height of 11.5 metres, around the height of two adult giraffes. The LSF has been built to provide a perfect, climate-controlled environment across 65 miles (106 km) of shelving (the distance between Cambridge and the Houses of Parliament) for its least-requested books – those deemed ‘low-use’. At capacity, the LSF is capable of holding in the region of four million items. At current estimates, the LSF is not expected to be full until 2030 at the earliest. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/hr-mohan_elys-new-cathedral-of-books-opens-f… https://lnkd.in/gWZQYXHm With regards HR Mohan -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Very interesting story related to history of printing
by Mohan Hr 18 Nov '21

Very interesting story related to history of printing ====================================== A 1971 cheque from Cambridge University Press instructing Barclay's Bank to repay to the University the debt owed by 16th century printer John Siberch. John Siberch: Cambridge’s first printer (and record debtor?) 2021 is the 500th anniversary of the first works printed in Cambridge Five hundred years ago, John Siberch, the son of a German wool merchant, borrowed £20 from Cambridge University and set up the first printing press in the city. He stayed in Cambridge only a short while before returning to Germany and dying, as far as records suggest, without ever repaying his debt. Adjusting for a compound interest rate of 5% over the intervening five centuries, the debt would today stand in the hundreds of billions Fortunately for any descendants, the original sum was repaid and interest waived by the University in 1971, on the 450th anniversary of Cambridge’s first publication. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/hr-mohan_very-interesting-story-related-to-h… https://lnkd.in/g4_pKr4M With regards HR Mohan -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
