Open-source taxonomy stacks for integration with data and bibliographic apps
by hello＠ai4library.com 06 Jul '26

06 Jul '26

I test ran two open-source stacks that manages taxonomies - Opentheso and Skosmos. Both platforms support multilingual, hierarchical vocabularies and can manage multiple vocabularies (or concept schemes) within a single deployment. Opentheso was first released in 2006 and has been maintained by the WST (Web Sémantique & Thésauri) team at the Maison de l'Orient et de la Méditerranée (MOM/CNRS). It has an admin console, along with the REST API. Opentheso uses Java and Postgres and released under a GPL-alike license. Opentheso also integrates with systems like Koha, WordPress, Nuxeo and others through REST APIs and plugins. Like Opentheso, Skosmos is built around the W3C SKOS (Simple Knowledge Organization System) standard. Skosmos does not store taxonomy data itself, instead it reads RDF vocabularies from an RDF triplestore. Skosmos is maintained by Kansalliskirjasto - The National Library of Finland. FAO AGROVOC is one of the flagship deployments of Skosmos. For bringing standards-based taxonomies to ODK/CAPIBuilder, both platforms are technically suitable. If the primary requirement is publishing stable taxonomies with relatively infrequent updates, Skosmos offers a simpler operational model. If collaborative taxonomy authoring and governance are required, Opentheso is the stronger choice. Organizations can access Opentheso through web to manage their taxonomies. STMet 2026 @ Bali

23 June 2026. From: stm(a)socio.org.uk Seventh International Conference on Science & Technology Metrics (STMet 2026) Physical/Virtual October 02-04, 2026 Bali, Indonesia Universitas Islam Negari Sunan Kalijaga, Indonesia Sessions will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn, Bali. https://www.socio.org.uk/stm Co-located with Springer Real-Time Intelligent Systems (https://www.socio.org.uk/rtis) Building metrics is key to measuring science and technology and translating those measures to improve outcomes. The metric is not confined to drawing numbers and analysing. Selecting a metric depends on synthesising multiple directions and evidence-based data, producing scientific and technological evaluation benchmarks and standards, and implementing them with real data to mark a full-fledged system. Recently, we have witnessed the emergence of new metrics-based models that aim to reflect the growth of science and technology. The proposed Science and Technology Metrics (STMet 2026) conference addresses the assessment of various aspects of science and technology using multiple metrics, which can be best expressed through different approaches. In addition to the standard conference track and the Doctoral Symposium, STMetrics will host several workshops and tutorials related to the conference theme. The workshops provide participants with a friendly, interactive atmosphere to present novel ideas and discuss the application of metrics in Science and Technology Systems. The tutorials aim to enable participants to familiarise themselves with the theoretical and practical aspects, as well as the application of metrics. The proposed conference includes invited talks, presentations, tutorials, workshops, and discussions. The STMet has tracks on specialized topics. The STMet addresses the themes below, but is not limited to them. The proposed conference includes invited talks, presentations, tutorials, workshops, and discussions. June 3, 2026 From: stm(a)socio.org.uk Seventh International Conference on Science & Technology Metrics (STMet 2026) Physical/Virtual October 02-04, 2026 Bali, Indonesia Universitas Islam Negari Sunan Kalijaga, Indonesia Sessions will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn, Bali. https://www.socio.org.uk/stm Co-located with Springer Real-Time Intelligent Systems (https://www.socio.org.uk/rtis) Building metrics is key to measuring science and technology and translating those measures to improve outcomes.
