Dear Professional Colleagues, Congratulations to Department of Public Libraries, Govt. of Karnataka for having launched the Portal on Karnataka in Kannada entitled " Suvarna Karnataka Kannada Antarjala Vahini (Suvarna Karnataka Portal)" on the occasion of Golden Jubilee Celebration of the formation of Karnataka State. This unique Portal gives various kinds of information about Kannada and Karnataka including Education, Health, Agriculture, Entertainment, Kannada Films and songs, Kannada Literature, Fine Arts, Sports, Cooking, Law, etc. One of the main attraction is Children Section with stories and songs. College Post Bangalore-560059 Seminar Comparative Analysis of Citation Databases: Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar The volume of scientific literature grew exponentially as a result of increased R& D activities after World War II. This posed different problems for users and indexers of information. The shortcomings of traditional subject indexes resulted in duplication of scientific activity. Sometimes, the terms used in subject index were ambiguous. These problems necessitated a unified index to scientific literature that was current, free from semantic difficulties and not dependent on the knowledge of subject indexers. Citation index emerged not only as retrieval tool but also used as an evaluation tool for evaluating scientists and to provide a way to search for and analyze the literature in a way not possible through simple keyword/topical searching. It also enables users to gather data on the "impact" of individual authors and journals, as well as assessing particular areas of research activity and publication. ISI (Thomson Scientific) citation databases have been used for decades as the only tools for locating citations. ISI databases (currently known as Web of Science), however, may no longer be sufficient because it covers only journal articles. There are other citation databases, which covers non-journal documents also. This seminar will present a pilot study of the new citation databases like, Google Scholar & Scopus. We have a good news that Indian Engineering Degrees will soon be accredited in US and other developed countries. Read the news from Rediff.com [ http://www.rediff.com/money/2007/jul/05eng.htm ] National Board of Accreditation (NBA) of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the accreditation agency for Engineering Education in India. They did a good job in getting a provisional signatory membership in Washington Accord, which recognises engineering degrees among the member countries. NBA is allowed 2 years to to bring its academic programmes, curricula and syllabus, examination and evaluation system to the international level and revise its accreditation system to make it fully outcome based, with credit system for flexibility and continuous evaluation for improved learning being the basis of such programmes.If NBA and our technical institutes are successful in achieving this goal, Indian engineering degrees will be internationaly recognised. Right to Information Act -Jobs should be given to Information Professionals

Dear Sir/Madam, The much awaited Right to Information Act has come into force in India.And already we have seen and heard that there is a great demand for information which are vital to its functioning and also to contain corruption and to hold Governments and their instrumentalities accountable to the governed.But Govt Authorities have totally neglected the library and Information Professionals, most of the people who have appointed as public Information Officer have came from Journalism and mass communication." Public Information Officer" job is best suited for LIS professionals where the skills of storage , organise and dissemination of Information is highly required.Already there are instances that Public Information Officers have failed to provide right information to the right people at a right time.This is because of lack of skills to organise and storage of Information.This is the right time to Library Association and Universities to pressurize Govt. appoint library and Information professionals as " Public Information Officer" and this will definitely helps people to have information quickly whenever they need.This will not only helps govt to function smoothly and huge opportunities for LIS professionals as well. BLIS Revision at IGNOU

It is a bold step. However, it is the time when universities should discontinue BLISc course (as they did at the time of introducing BLIS/BLISc in place of diploma) and introduce 2 years MLISc course. This will certainly give opportunities to increase the depth of the content, reduce duplication and include new topics. Does any expert on recruitment/promotion committee ask questions to even a fresh professional considering the fact that the candidate has only BLISc degree? LIS departments are expected to impart the necessary library and information skills to their students so that the student can to function effectively in libraries and other information-related work environment with minimum supervision. The course designers/expert committee should design an appropriate curriculum keeping in view the facts that * Employers are many and varied. * Employers having different missions and objectives * Employers needs to be surveyed in order to know their requirements and assessments * Demands of the employers change over time. * The Department may be conducting Master and other programme in LIS * Feedback of experts are important * Different skills needed to perform positional responsibilities & professional activities. * Students are coming from different socio-economic backgrounds with various academic specializations and language skills. * Specialized skills needed to serve under privileged, illiterate, neo- literate and physically challenged fellow citizen. * Specialized skills needed to play effective role in information literacy programme IGNOU may also consider allowing student to take a few courses from other areas: mass communication, technical writing, computer (CIC, BCA, MCA?), psychology etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Arup Raychaudhury Indian Statistical Institute 203 BT Road Calcutta 700 108 INDIA -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
