Right to Information Act -Jobs should be given to Information Professionals

Dear Sir/Madam, The much awaited Right to Information Act has come into force in India.And already we have seen and heard that there is a great demand for information which are vital to its functioning and also to contain corruption and to hold Governments and their instrumentalities accountable to the governed.But Govt Authorities have totally neglected the library and Information Professionals, most of the people who have appointed as public Information Officer have came from Journalism and mass communication." Public Information Officer" job is best suited for LIS professionals where the skills of storage , organise and dissemination of Information is highly required.Already there are instances that Public Information Officers have failed to provide right information to the right people at a right time.This is because of lack of skills to organise and storage of Information.This is the right time to Library Association and Universities to pressurize Govt. appoint library and Information professionals as " Public Information Officer" and this will definitely helps people to have information quickly whenever they need.This will not only helps govt to function smoothly and huge opportunities for LIS professionals as well. University of Calicut LIS Conference 2007 (UCALIS 2007) will be organized during 28 - 29 March 2007 on the theme Future Librarianship in Knowledge Society. It is also a fact that the emerging knowledge society offers many new opportunities. The new technologies have changed the ways in which information is published, communicated, stored, organized, accessed and utilized. The library without walls in the form of digital repositories and portals are accessible to users without any barriers of space and time. Indian Statistical Institute Documentation Research Training Centre Bangalore-560059 SEMINAR ON Mapping Information Retrieval Research Mapping of a domain has been a widely employed technique in scientometrics to study its dynamics over time. It is a common practice to base such mapping on published literature in the area. Mapping the dynamics of a discipline over time is expected to highlight the shift, if any, in the research fronts in that domain. Literature on mapping is extensive and has references to the possible applications of mapping- the principal ones being science policy formulation, research funding, etc. In this seminar it is proposed to present structural changes in the domain of Information retrieval as seen via mapping its dynamics over the last 35 years. The choice of IR has been influenced by the fact that IR, more than any other sub-discipline, has influenced the direction of Information Science. The IR research community has also expanded considerably and encompasses research in linguistics (e.g. NLP), data / text mining, ontology and semantic web, to mention a few that have attracted wide attention in addition to the traditional areas of IR research. The principal methodologies employed are Co-word Analysis and Co-citation Analysis. The choice of these techniques for mapping the data was based on the fact that these have been effectively employed by many to project data as maps without loss of essential information and the fact that a public domain S/w is available. Social scientists engage in research and theorize about both aggregate and individual behaviours. In these present days, social science researches spread across a wide range of disciplines presenting new hoizons in the research methods. And with the emergence of web technology, Internet resources for education and research for the social sciences have much impact in the field. So the present workshop is planned to offer an easy to use and powerful tool for discovering the best Internet resources to enrich the services towards scientists/researchers by accessing social science information exhaustively. Objectives 1. To provide background knowledge of the Social Science Information System. 2. To offer hands on experience on Accessing Social Science Information in the Digital Era. Methodology The workshop lectures will be followed by demonstration and hands-on practices as far as practicable. The Lab facilities (with one computer for two participants) will be made available for practice. Resource Persons Resource Persons will be invited from different Social Science Research Institutions / Universities in India. Target Participants Library and Information Science Professionals, Research Scholars, and other interested persons. The Workshop is confined to twenty participants only and will be filled strictly on first come first served basis.
