_Science and Technology Wikis?_ Colleagues/ For my next SCI-5 column for _Science & Technology Libraries_ (Haworth), I plan to profile five significant Science and/or Technology wikis. As defined by The Wikipedia [ http://en.wikipedia.org/ ], a "Wiki or wiki (pronounced 'wicky' or 'weekee') is a Website (or other hypertext document collection) that allows any user to add content, as on an Internet forum, but also allows that content to be edited by any other user" [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki ]. The SciTech wikis I've identified through Google include: · AVC Science Wiki (NSDL) [ http://avc.comm.nsdlib.org/cgi-bin/sciencewiki.pl ] · Science Fair Project Encyclopedia [ http://www.all-science-fair-projects.com/science_fair_projects_encyclopedia… ] · SEEK: Science Environment for Ecological Knowledge [ http://seek.ecoinformatics.org/ ] · Simple Science Wiki [ http://www.renaissoft.com/April/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Simple_Science_Wiki ] · Virtual Math Teams Project [ http://mathforum.org/wiki/VMT/VMT?HomePage ] In addition to these potential candidates for the Sci-5 Treatment (e.g., Ecological and Environmental Data [ http://www.public.iastate.edu/~gerrymck/EcoData.pdf ]), I am interested in learning of Any and All Science and/or Technology Wikis for potential consideration and review [and for inclusion in a possible CyberStacks(sm) registry [:-)]. Of particular interest are the use of wikis by Science and/or Technology Libraries. TIA! New display 'as clear as a glossy magazine' Hewlett Packard has developed a revolutionary liquid-crystal display technology which it hopes will ultimately lead to ultra high-resolution flat screens ranging in size from a magazine page to an advertising billboard. Moreover, the screens will use far less power than ordinary LCD screens, and can be made using cheap technology. Conventional computer screens can only manage 1600 by 1200 pixels, and even high-definition TV displays create their images with an array of 1920 by 1080 pixels at best. Now, HP reckons it can make an A4-sized screen with 7000 by 5000 pixels - matching the quality of a glossy magazine. HP says it will be able to replicate this quality on screens all the way up to large electronic posters and billboards. HP calls the new system a post aligned bistable nematic (PABN) LCD. This week, HP demonstrated two 4 by 3-centimetre prototypes. The images on the prototypes were undeniably coarse, with visible blemishes and faulty pixels. But HP stressed that PABN will not be ready for market any time soon. Rather, the demonstration is proof that the technology works. The site offers an easy to use interface where you can indicate the resource to analyze and how to download the results as XML, XHTML or RDF files. In the current version (1.0 BETA), the site's engine is able to find the resources to process using keywords, full URLs or more complex queries with operators, like "ISBN", used to collect the bibliographic data for published documents (see http://www.describethis.com/help/search.html). In the first case it works as a metasearch engine using other search engines to locate the best sites where the resource can be found. The results returned back contains all the recognized and generated Dublin Core elements for the requested resource and can be downloaded as RDF, XML or XHTML collections.
