9th Dr. TB Rajashekar Memorial Seminar (2013): Digital Information Services in Academic and R&D Information Centers
by madhuresh.singhal 31 Oct '13

31 Oct '13

Dear Members, NCSI-Net, an informal association comprising of erstwhile NCSI staff and its trainees, was established in 2000. During its 13 years of existence, the association has been constantly engaged in organizing various professional activities like monthly lectures, invited talks, seminars, conferences, and workshops. It has also been collaborating with other professional associations in organizing and conducting various professional activities. Being an informal association, it had its own advantages and to some extent, some constraints, too. Also, many of NCSIians have been expressing their intent, for a long time now, that it should become a registered body so that it can engage itself in lot more diversified activities. Several of senior NCSI-Net members have been mulling about the idea of NCSI-Net being a registered body for a long time. Around March 2013, it was decided that NCSI-Net would be registered as a charitable trust. The process for registration was started thereafter and after few initial hurdles, we finally managed to get it registered. We are very happy to convey that our plan came into fruition on Friday, 14 June 2013. So, NCSI-Net is now NCSI-Net Foundation, a registered charitable trust. The foundation, for the present, will continue with the existing activities including the annual lecture and seminar series in honor and memory of late Dr. T.B. Rajashekar. In fact, the TBR Memorial lecture, 2013, on "Knowledge Diversity in Media Content Analysis - An Analytico-synthetic Approach" delivered by Dr. Devika P. Madalli of DRTC, on Friday 21 June 2013, was the inaugural event of the foundation. The foundation already has a web presence with a very rudimentary web site, accessible at http://www.ncsinet.org. It will be improved up on in due course of time. We are now gearing up for the second event by the foundation - Dr. T.B. Rajashekar Memorial Seminar. The announcement about the seminar follows: NCSI-Net Foundation cordially invites you to the 9th Dr. TBR Memorial Seminar (2013). This year's topic will be "Digital Information Services in Academic and R&D Information Centers". It's a one-day seminar targeted for the benefit of students of Library and Information Science and budding LIS professionals. The details of the seminar are given below. Is your LIS-Forum mail / posting being distributed to all the members?
by franc＠library.iisc.ernet.in 31 Oct '13

31 Oct '13

Dear Members, The answer to the above question would be both 'yes' and 'no'. The answer would be yes, all the lis-forum members will receive a copy of your posting/reply provided your lis-forum mail is sent in 'plain text' mode. The answer would be 'no', ALL the members may not receive a copy of your mail if your lis-forum mail/reply is not sent in 'plain text' mode If you want the answer to be 'yes' every time you make a posting to the lis-forum, then you just need to ensure that your email client, a program used to access and manage your mails, sends all your lis-forum mails - both new postings and replies - in plain text mode. How does one ensure that the lis-forum mails are sent in 'plain text' mode? Quite simple. For Gmail users, the procedure to be followed is: While composing your LIS-Forum mail/reply, click on the small inverted triangle that appears at the bottom right corner. Clicking it will list the various options. Click on the 'Plain text mode' option. The selection will be saved and all your mails, henceforth, will be sent in Plain text mode. The default mode for Gmail is 'Rich text' and this mode should be avoided for lis-forum mails. For Yahoo users: The default mode in Yahoo is 'Rich text'. To change this to 'Plain text mode', the procedure is: In the 'Compose' screen, click on the '>>' sign to toggle (change) between 'Rich text' and 'Plain text' modes. The '>>' sign appears at the bottom portion of 'Compose' screen. I'm not familiar with other email service providers like Hotmail, Rediffmail, etc. The procedure to send the mails in 'Plain text' mode from these email providers should also be quite straight forward. So, just ensure that your mails to lis-forum are in 'Plain text'. This will guarantee that your mails are distributed to ALL the members of the list. Subscription to LIS-Forum can be made either in the 'digest' mode or in the 'non-digest' mode. In the 'digest' mode, all the approved mails from LIS-Forum are sent as a single mail. In the 'non-digest' mode, the approved mails are sent individually. The mails that are received in the 'Plain text' mode gets distributed to ALL the members without any issues. However, mails that are received in non-plain text mode (rich text, HTML etc), may not reach ALL the members especially those who have subscribed in 'non-digest' mode. So, if your posting/mail is not reaching all the members of the list, you know the reason for that and do take the corrective measure. Thanks for your co-operation. ### IASLIC demands for setting up Indian Institute of Library and Information Sciences
by Prof Pijushkanti Panigrahi 31 Oct '13

31 Oct '13

IASLIC demands for setting up Indian Institute of Library and Information Sciences Dear Professional Friends We all are aware that the Working Group on Libraries under National Knowledge Commission (NKC) in its Report to the Nation (2006-2009) entitled “Libraries: Gateway to Knowledge – A Roadmap for Revitalization” recommended the formation of Indian Institute of Library and Information Science (IILIS) of national importance along with other nine major recommendations on libraries. In pursuance of this, a High Level Committee National Mission on Libraries (NML) had been set up by the Government of India. It was extremely heartening to us (IASLIC) with the hope that this NML would give due importance in implementing all ten major recommendations including setting up the Indian Institute of Library and Information Science (IILIS) of national importance which, as a nodal body, would give a vital direction to LIS education, research and practice for both high speed generation and use of knowledge needed for brining a structural change in Indian economy. IASLIC demands that the IILIS is absolutely the need of the hour for the LIS profession of Library and Information Science to fulfill its role as a corner stone of the knowledge society. I am sure; all of our fellow professionals bear the same feelings in their heart. But unfortunately NML has not taken yet any positive step to this effect. At least we could not find any such prominent effort on the part of NML. Thus we, on behalf of IASLIC, wrote to the Hon’ble Prime Minister expressing our grievance in this regard and also approached to Dr Barun Mukherjee, Hon’ble MP (Rajya Shabha) to help Library Professionals of India. IASLIC is ever grateful to Dr Mukherjee for taking up this matter and also for putting forward a demand in the Parliament on August 14, 2013. “Dr Barun Mukherjee (West Bengal) : Sir, I would urge upon the Minister of Culture to set up a National Institute of Library and Information Science as is being demanded by thousands of library professionals and has been recommended by the National Knowledge Commission (NKC) constituted in 2005 initiated by the Prime Minister and headed by Mr Sam Pitroda. The Working Group of Libraries under NKC in its Report entitled “Libraries: Gateway to Knowledge – A Roadmap for revitalization” recommended in 2006 the formation of Indian Institute of Library and Information Science of national importance. With the growing technological development and advancement in research and studies, library and information science have assumed added importance. To feed the need of expertise for the purpose, a national institute for studies, research and training is essential, which we are lacking till now, particularly in the field of public library. Although LIS courses up to Post Graduate and Ph D levels are offered in many of the universities, overall guiding model at the national level is yet to be developed. NKC has, therefore, recommended NILIS as a nodal body. But this is yet to be implemented by the Government. Even it is not known whether the recommendation has been rejected, and, if so, why? LIS is now a full grown professional subject, having its exclusive Encyclopedia in the International Market. When other professional subjects are having apex academic bodies, why not the LIS? I, therefore, request the Ministry of Culture to take necessary steps to set up the NILIS at an early date.” I, on behalf of IASLIC, request all of our fellow professionals and professional associations to join hands to strengthen this movement.
