Lecture at Central Library, JNU on August 27, 2013 at 3.00 pm
by Dr. Ramesh C Gaur 05 Nov '13

Central Library Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) cordially invites you to the 12th Library Lecture Series and Outreach Programme Topic: Building a Print Fanzine Collection in a Digital Era Speaker : Ms. Isabel Ayres Maringelli Walter Wey Library Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo http://biblioteca.pinacoteca.org.br:9090/site/ imaringelli(a)pinacoteca.org.br Date: Tuesday, 27th August 2013 at 3:00 pm Venue: Committee Room, Central Library, JNU, New Delhi About the Topic: Building a Print Fanzine Collection in a Digital Era. Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo is the oldest art museum in São Paulo, SP, Brazil. The Walter Wey Library was created in 1959 to support the Museum staff: curators, researchers and conservators but today the majority of patrons is graduate students. The Library's collection is rich in representing Brazilian artists and contains materials pertinent to the Museum's art collections but it includes materials from all over the world. The Library has just started a new section that is formed by fanzines. Although there are many other libraries that hold these collections they are not very familiar either to users or to librarians. The library became interested in starting this collection because we have received many fanzines made by visual artists, illustrators, poets and comic writers. Fanzines are self-published booklets, created by hand or using low-cost printing technologies that allow to creator to take part in the whole production process. Although there are some E-zines being produced, some authors claims that fanzines could be considered as means of cultural resistance, in terms that they are printed and usually handmade, in opposition to all social media and digital sources for publishing. By bringing these materials into an art public Library Pinacoteca seeks to invite more people to read them. The circulation of fanzines could be restricted to other places than public museum and they are so original and creative that we decided to keep them and make them available to users. We expect to do a research to find relationships with contemporary art and also with other disciplines as Communication Theory and Information Science. About the Speaker: Isabel Ayres Maringelli was born in São Paulo, SP, Brazil, 1969. She has a Master of Business Administration - MBA in Cultural Economics (2009) – FGV – Getulio Vargas Foundation and a Graduate Degree and Bachelor's in Information and Documentation Science – Sociology and Political School São Paulo Foundation (1993). She is the Coordinator of Library Walter Wey, Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, the oldest art museum in the city, since 2009. Prior to this she has worked for more than 20 year in the Business Administration in the Getulio Vargas Foundation. She has published some articles in the field of use of open source software for library automation and libraries portals and has also been working with exhibitions productions. Please make it convenient to attend. Indian Statistical Institute Documentation Research and Training Centre Seminar (3) 2012-14 Information Retrieval from Document Image Databases Abstract: ========= Information is an essential component for the progress, welfare and development of any community. In this era of information explosion, newer forms of information sources are slowly replacing the traditional ones. Today, 'Document Image Databases' have gained paramount popularity as an information source. This is being considered as an important topic of research in knowledge and data engineering. In an attempt to move towards the paperless society, large quantities of printed documents are digitized and stored as images in databases. In this context one major challenge that information scientists face is the retrieval of relevant information from image data than from text data. The present discussion revolves around the study of information retrieval from document image databases. You Can Go To Jail For An Overdue Library Book
by Jayadev P Hiremath 02 Nov '13

02 Nov '13

By Mary Beth Quirk<http://consumerist.com/author/marybethquirkconsumerist/> November 1, 2013 If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the years, it is not to mess with librarians or library materials<http://consumerist.com/?s=overdue+library+books>. We’ve learned some other things too, of course, but for today’s lesson in library lateness, just go with it. Moving on! A Texas man was arrested this week for failing to return a GED study guide he simply spent too long studying — three years — and was sent to jail to mull over his actions, or lack thereof. It’s not like he’s serving hard time or anything, though. People like him are usually released on a $200 bond after arrest, notes a municipal judge. KTWX.com<http://www.kwtx.com/ourtown/home/headlines/Copperas-Cove-Overdue-Library-Bo…>cites court documents that show he first checked out the guide in 2010 and never responded to the library’s subsequent attempts by phone and emails to recover its property. The library told the municipal court and boom, you’ve got an active overdue libraries material warrant on your head and cops can bring you in during a routine stop. To those who say it sounds unfair to go to jail over a book, just think about the people who might want or need that same tome, only to find it unavailable, said the judge. That’s why the city passed the ordinance allowing for arrest warrants in these cases a few years ago — it was getting too expensive to replace materials that weren’t coming back. “Universal hatred,” the judge calls the reaction to the ordinance. “Nobody wants to get arrested over a library book. The other side of that is people that go to our library and can’t have these materials, they’re put out too,” he said of the reaction to getting an arrest in such a case. The suspect didn’t seem excited to talk to local media about his case, but KTWX notes that a copy of a GED study guide like the one he checked out was back on the shelf, with his library card inside. We can’t help but wonder how that GED went after three years of studying. -- Warm regards.
