Fwd: SSRN's 2015 Mid-Year President's Letter
by Subbiah Arunachalam 28 Jun '15

28 Jun '15

Here is a circular from SSRN which would be relevant to all social science students and researchers and librarians supporting them. Arun ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Gregg Gordon <Admin(a)ssrn.com> Date: Sun, Jun 28, 2015 at 12:37 AM Subject: SSRN's 2015 Mid-Year President's Letter To: subbiah.arunachalam(a)gmail.com <http://hq.ssrn.com/GroupProcesses/RedirectClick.cfm?partid=1406236&corid=35…> SSRN has delivered close to 88 million full-text PDF downloads and we are pleased with our continued growth. The SSRN eLibrary <http://hq.ssrn.com/GroupProcesses/RedirectClick.cfm?partid=1406236&corid=35…> currently contains 613,000 paper abstracts from 283,000 authors and received 64,000 new full-text submissions in the past year. SSRN's CiteReader technology, built with ITX Corp., has extracted over 9 million references and over 9 million footnotes, and matched over 6 million citations from our 510,000 full-text papers. As we approach the notable milestone of delivering 100 million downloads, we know that SSRN’s most important contributions to scholarship are helping researchers innovate faster, and provide Open Access and enhanced discovery of new results for the world. Our development team has been busy this year. We recently released the ability to View a PDF in the Browser; simplifying access and opening up a host of capabilities for readers and mobile users. Over the next few months, we will release the following improvements to SSRN: 1) Advanced Search for SSRN’s eLibrary (which will allow users to filter by subject network in addition to search term, author name and paper date); 2) allow authors to upload a photo and CV to their SSRN Author Pages; 3) greatly improve the ability to find and select a co-author during the submission process; and 4) create comprehensive Organization Home Pages that present a summary of individual organizations’ activity on SSRN with easy access to their authors, papers, metrics, Research Paper Series, Conferences, and rankings. We’ve spent significant resources over the past year strengthening the reliability and scalability of our technological systems. We will continue with that work over the next year, while also releasing new user features that improve the discovery and organization of scholarly research. Our mid-year distribution break is scheduled for Monday, 29 June 2015 through Sunday, 12 July 2015. During the break, SSRN's abstracting eJournals will not be distributed so that we can expand the capacity and improve the performance of our servers. We will continue to provide support for downloads, submissions, and subscriptions but there may be short periods of time during the break when the site is unavailable. For any requests during the break, please contact customer support at SSRNSupport(a)SSRN.com <ssrnsupport(a)ssrn.com> or call toll free 877-SSRNHelp (877-777-6435). Outside of the United States, call +1 585 442 8170. We are available Monday through Friday between 8:30AM and 6:00PM, United States Eastern time. We are always interested in your feedback about SSRN and our team loves to hear stories about how SSRN has impacted your life. Please contact me at Gregg_Gordon(a)SSRN.com <gregg_gordon(a)ssrn.com> or use our "Feedback to SSRN" link on most SSRN web pages. Thank you for your continued support! Do we really deserve to be known as Information Manager/Librarian in Digital Era?
by DP Tripathi 27 Jun '15

27 Jun '15

Dr. S.R.Ranganathan, also known as a ‘Father of Library Science in India’ propounded the five laws of library science in 1928 which was later published in the year 1931 in the form of Book. The law says: 1. Books are for use 2. Every reader his/her book 3. Every book its reader 4. Save the time of the reader 5. The library is a growing organism Every law has its implications and as per each implication, the ‘SERVICE’ is key point for any kind of library. As per the first law ‘Books are for use’, the books available in the library are for use. In another way if we analyze then it means that books in libraries should not be kept away from the user and it has to be utilized. Then only the first law will be satisfied. There are also some related issues with the term USE such as physical location of the library, library timings, circulation policy, furniture and qualified staff. As per the second law ‘Every reader his/her book’ means ‘Books for All’. The meaning says that every reader should get the books required. As per the third law, ‘Every book its reader’, it mainly focuses on DOCUMENTS which says that each document in the library has its own reader. Now, it is up-to libraries to find out the methods to attract the readers so that each documents finds it reader. The most useful method was suggested the ‘Open Shelving’ where the readers will be free from any restrictions in order to reach any particular document. As per the fourth law ‘Save the time of the reader’, the library and its staff is mainly responsible for the recognition of excellence of library by meeting the needs of library users efficiently. In other way we can say that the library users should get their books/information quickly as per their demand. It means the staff should have strong skills for reference, technical services and also easy circulation of documents. As per the fifth law ‘The library is a growing organism’, the library should be continually changing place for growth of qualified staff, physical size and collection of library and uses of resources effectively. Due to the advent of technology the scenario of libraries have changed and many new changes have taken places in the libraries everywhere. Now, we are equipped with high end technological tools with capability to provide high end services and highly qualified staff with infrastructure. In other words, over the period of time, we have slowly shifted to digital world. But, still question remains in the mind that “Do we really deserve to be known as Information Manager/Librarian?” Are we really providing the services to our library users as per their expectations?
