TheModerator, Pleasepublish the following in Lis-Forum ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I feltvery sad to learn that Prof.Eugene Garefield is no more. Though citationindexing was followed in indexing legal cases in U.S.A., Prof.Eugene Garefield wasthe pioneer in large scale implementation of this concept in the fields of science,Humanities and Social Sciences. I was also fortunate enough to attend his ThreeDay Lecture programme titled “Scientific Information & Citation Studies”sponsored by Sarada Ranganathan Endowment and held at DRTC on Nov. 14-16, 1983.Prof.Ganesh Bhattacharya chaired thelecture programme. The "Citation Indexing" was much different from conventional "subject Indexing" and hence received much appreciation and also ctiticism from the audience. I summerised entire lecture programme and the same was highlyappreciated by then R&D bosses at Kirloskar Electric Co.Ltd., Bengaluru. Prof.EugeneGarefield’s major contribution is commercial exploitation of the concept ofCitation Indexing by publishing “Science Citation Index”, “Social ScienceCitation Index” and “Humanities Index” and making them available to scholarly worldfor many decades. The “Current Contents” was published by Institute ofScientific Information on weekly basis and the same was very popular amongscientific community. Dear Professional Colleagues, The Library, Documentation and Information Science Division of the Indian Statistical Institute is going to organize a Lecture-cum-Seminar on "Role of Social Media in Libraries" to be held on 6 March 2017 (10:30 AM – 5:30 PM) at the Institute premises. This event will be organized in memoriam of Dr. Eugene Garfield, founder of the Institute of Scientific Information and pioneer in the field of citation analysis. There will be a mix of lectures and interactive sessions with eminent experts in the field. Sad Demise of Eugene Garfield

Dear Sir, It is very sad to learnthat the pioneer of citation indexing Dr. Eugene Garfield is no more. His visionary product citation indexing databaseScience Citation Index (SCI) has altered the research landscape forever. Today Web of Science (WoS)has become synonym with quantitative measurement of scholarly publications. Itwas always pleasure to put hands on Eugene’s erstwhile print publications CurrentContents. Way back in 2002 and 2003 I had seen professors and researchers desperatelylooking for Current Contents in Mysore University Library and note down bibliographicalentries of to be published research articles in their area of expertise. Thoughhe was graduated in Chemistry, because of his love for library Science, he obtaineda degree in LIS. Dr. Eugene Garfield wrote series of article on our great legendaryLIS scientist Dr. S.R. Ranganathan. His column “Essays of an InformationScientist” gives us whole gamut of growth of world science literature. His legacy will continue with his pioneering work inthe field of citation indexing. Theworld LIS fraternity will surely miss him. In 2010 on the 85th birth anniversary ofEugene Garfield the Annals of Library and Information Studies brought out aspecial issue as a tribute to his path breaking work in the field ofscientometrics. The conference was held at Hotel Radisson Blu Atria, Palace Road, Bengaluru. There were 150 delegates from different parts of India which included librarians, students of library science schools, publishers, IT professionals, knowledge management experts and university teachers.
