Librarian, UoH Mob:9949953399 India CSR Dr. Velaga Venkatappiah Memorial award: The India CSR Velaga Memorial Award for Innovative Library Services is established by India CSR Network in the year 2017 in profound memory of Dr. Velaga Venkatappiah (1930-2014), a think tank of Indian library movement and architect of public library legislation, who passed away on 29th December, 2014. He was the first person to apply the concept of CSR to libraries and proved that public libraries can also derive support from corporate firms and PSUs under the CSR mandate. The Award is the brain-child of Rusen Kumar, who is the Founder and Editor of India CSR Network and is supported by the Society for Promotion of Public Libraries (SPPL), Visakhapatnam; Iyyanki-Velaga Puraskar Endowment, Guntur (AP); and Intellectuals Society for Socio-Techno Welfare (ISST),Gaziabad. The aim of this award is to identify and acknowledge Indian library professionals who have introduced innovative practices in library services and made significant contribution to meet their social responsibilities as librarians. The award is The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 11,000, a Certificate and a memento. The selection of the awardees will be based on the recommendation of the jury and the award is presented during the annual India-CSR meet. The recipient is also required to deliver Dr. Velaga memorial lecture on any of the topics related to libraries, librarianship, library services which embody the concept of corporate social responsibility. There are two categories of the Awards, namely: India CSR Dr. Velaga Memorial Awards for Innovative Library Services (Library Professional): This award will be conferred to those Indian Library professionals who are performing extraordinary work in the field of library services with ‘out of box’ thinking. Applicants have to prove their work which is leaving deep impact on the society. Cases of their work place will not be considered. Applicants have to give details of minimum last five years with evidence. India CSR Dr. Velaga Memorial Awards for Innovative Library Services (Non-Library Professional): This award will be conferred upon those people who are not LIS professionals but have focused on promotion reading culture by promoting library services and bringing social change. Applicants have to provide evidences of their work minimum last five years. Interested Indian citizens may send their nominations or nominate their colleagues who fulfill the basic requirements for the award. The applicants shall submit their nominations in the prescribed format (online and offline). The applications received will be scrutinized by a panel of experts and the winners will be selected. In case there are more than one persons selected for the award,it will be given jointly. Each application should accompany a nomination fee of Rs 1100/-. *INDEXING LANGUAGES <https://librarianshipstudies.blogspot.com/2017/03/indexing-languages.html>* A system for naming subjects in the way that we have described <https://librarianshipstudies.blogspot.com/2017/02/assigned-indexing.html> is called an *indexing language*, and, like any other language, it will consist of two parts: *vocabulary and syntax.* *Indexing language* <https://librarianshipstudies.blogspot.com/2017/03/indexing-languages.html> is a set of items (vocabulary) and devices for handling the relationships between them in a system for providing index descriptions. Indexing language is also referred to as *retrieval language*. If we use terms as they appear in documents without modification, we are using *natural language*. However, we will see that this can lead to problems. Where vocabulary is concerned, different authors may use different terms to express the same idea-synonyms-leading to a decrease in recall. Where syntax is concerned, the same idea may be expressed in more than one way: child psychology or psychology of children; adult education or education of adults. For these reasons, assigned indexing systems introduce a measure of control over the terms used: we use a controlled vocabulary. We also formalize a flexible syntax of natural language by permitting only certain constructions: instead of heat treatment of aluminum, we use aluminum-heat treatment; instead of using libraries for children, or children’s libraries, we use libraries, children’s. We are then using a *structured language*. A controlled vocabulary and formalized structure are features of an *artificial indexing language*.
