Dear subscribers I am a new member to these discussion lists . Grateful for your views on subject topic What is a Digital library ? Is it the combination of the following activities 1 Accessing library catalogue online (WEBOPAC) 2 accessing online commercial databases through Internet 3 creation of databases of subject specific or document specific (PhD Thesis; Project Reports ; reprints ) 4 Communicating electronically among librarians and user population In addition to the above anything more is included in the concept of digital library ? . How far the concept developed from theoretical aspect to practicality ? I presume that digital libraries helps librarians to improve service efficiencies to their patrons. Can I request subscribers of these lists to list few advantages they gained in their service efficiency due to digitalisation to their library .( preferably own experience ). Dear Moderator, All languages have their place under the sun with varying degree of importance. You need your mother tongue, your regional language, your national language and also English. I sincerely feel that one should not be at the cost of other. Moreover, it is natural for human beings to take pride in their own language. Time to put an end to this thread ? Regards. Dear friends, English may have transformed the world, but with non-native speakers now outnumbering native speakers 3 to 1, the language is being reshaped in return. In Asia, alone, the number of English users has topped 350 million, roughly the combined populations of the United States, Britain and Canada. Please read the recent article "NOT THE QUEEN'S ENGLISH?", published in the NEWSWEEK (7 March 2005), and you will find answer why do we need high proficiency in English lanugage. Some quotes are mentioned below for your info: "We tell students you need two things to succeed: English and computers," says Chetan Kumar, a Euro Languages manager "Within a decade, 2 billion people will be studying English and about half the world - some 3 billion people - will speak it", according to a recent report from the British Council As one 12-year-old self-taught English-speaker from China's southwestern Sichuan province says, "If you can't speak English, it's like you're deaf and dumb." Dear All, ........Response to Mr./Dr. Hiremath I am annoyed only because your arguments are not logical. Basically members on this forum can offer their suggestions when the argument is logical. I am surprised that you talk about decency! Can you just read once again all your messages to this forum how decent the words you have used. Disserviceunwarrantedslaves to Englishunfortunate Indiansshow oof...look down upon By the way who are you to refer to others as unfortunate You are questioning me what is show off, it is you who used these words in your message first timeif you can offer me explanation what you mean by this.. I can give you reply Dont you understand even now, after reading several messages on this forum explaining why you need to know English and when you need it ? Who are you to declare Tamil is the language of Bangalore? If you want to promote or advice usage of regional languages, canvas in that language, why are you using English for this purpose? Since you are opposing usage of English, first you have to implement and stop using English before you advice others. In spite of several responses on this forum --- explaining why English is essential, you are continuing to argue BLINDLY and enforcing your fixed concepts and ideas on others. Phishing - U should know this - read on

Dear All, I was checking my Gmail and came across the term 'Phishing' in the mail option. Gmail is a very good mail service and is still in beta and one of the best available today. Gmail is good for lot many reasons like search facility for mails that you receive, labeling the mails for organizing, and of course Phishing. It is important for any LIS professionals to be with the latest technology. Phishing: Phishing is a form of fraud in which a message sender pretends to be a representative of a legitimate organization in an attempt to trick the recipient into divulging important personal information like a password or bank account number. If you believe the message that you got is a phishing attack, you can report it to the Gmail abuse team and help thwart the attack and others like it. Reporting this message as an attack will send the entire message to Gmail the team for review. To learn more just open Gmail that you have received and in the 'Show options' link you can find out more about this (check out wiht friends if you do not have a gmail id). Many of you would remember the mails that you would have forwarded to others thinking that the forward would fetch help to someone in trouble or promising a prize like a mobile phone etc. and the sender would have requested a copy to the original sender. This is nothing but drama to fetch the new email ids' and to send unsolicited or spam mails to the available mail Ids'. Pls remember not to send any such forwards as all the recepients would get so many spams. Try getting Gmail from your friends and start using it immediately as it requires invitation.
