Amudhavalli, President, MALA 6.00 p.m. ¡V Thematic Address - Mr. Sashi kumar 6.40 p.m. ¡V Interaction 6.55 p.m. ¡V Vote of Thanks - Ms. Githanjali Chandrasekhar, Branch Head, Library and Information Services, TCS Sashi Kumar Mr. Sashi Kumar, a former English Newscaster in Doordarshan, was the founder of Asianet , India ¡Šs first satellite TV channel in the regional language. He has scripted and directed numerous short films and docu-features and in most instances anchored them. He traveled extensively to make these features, visiting the Soviet Union several times during the dismantling phase of ¡¥glasnost¡Š and ¡¥perestroika¡Š; East Germany (GDR) just before the collapse of the Berlin Wall; Romania in the immediate wake of the fall of Nicolae Ceausescu; several countries in eastern Europe to get a feel at first hand of the collapse of communism in that part of the world; several states in Europe and the USA for a mega feature on Disarmament and Development. He also produced a number of special features on the issues affecting South Asia covering Sri Lanka , Afghanistan and the Maldives . Apart from his television documentaries and features, he scripted and directed a film in 16 mm on a friend fighting cancer titled ¡¥Vijayalakshmi, the story of a young woman with cancer, and a science-fictional feature titled ¡¥Nemesis-II¡Š. Scripted and directed a full length feature film in Hindi titled ¡¥Kaya Taran¡Š (Chrysalis). The film deals with the crisis of identity in a multicultural society that turns continually volatile, and straddles the anti-Sikh carnage in the wake of the assassination of Mrs. Indira Gandhi in 1984 and the post Godhra anti-Muslim riots in Gujarat in 2002 (www.kayataran.com) It won him the G.Aravindan Award for the Best Debutant Filmmaker in India of 2004 and has been selected for various international film festivals. In 1999, Sashi Kumar founded the Media Development Foundation as a nonprofit public Trust dedicated to excellence in journalism education and best practices in the profession. Along with his co-Trustees like Mr. N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu group of publications and others he set up the Asian College of Journalism in Chennai (www.asianmedia.org) and presently heading it as its Chairman. Library Hotel From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Library Hotel is a 60-room boutique hotel in New York City, located at 299 Madison Avenue (at 41st Street), near the New York Public Library, Bryant Park, and Grand Central Terminal. The hotel boasts a unique organizing principle: each of its ten guest floors has a theme, designated after a major category of the Dewey Decimal Classification (the 5th floor, for example, is the 500s, the Sciences), with each room as a subcategory or genre, such as Mathematics (Room 500.1) or Botany (Room 500.004). (Dewey categories 000, 100, and 200 are placed on the 10th, 11th, and 12th floors, respectively.) Other room themes include Erotic Literature (Room 800.001), Poetry (Room 800.003), and Music (Room 700.005). All rooms have a small complement of books and decorations that accompany the theme, with 6000 books overall throughout the hotel. Because of this classification scheme, the hotel owners were sued in 2003 by the OCLC (owners of the Dewey Decimal Classification system). Open Access: a basic element for development

Respected Sir/Madam and Dear Friends, If the seed of Open Access can be shown properly to the bed of Five Laws of Library Science of Dr. Ranganathan it wil be more stable and enduring then it can not be rooted out by any copyright lobby.Our main motto is to provide right information to the right people at the right time so that our society can excel in every sphere of life .This way we do connect us to the developmental process of our nation.This has also been mentioned in our Indian constitution as our fundamental duty(Part IV -A /Article 51-A of the constitution)- To strive towards excellence in all spheres of individual and collective activity so that the nation constantly rises to higher levels of endeavour and achievement.To excel in any sphere of life , access to the right information is a very basic need and if people are denied to that, then we will have to compromise with the future of the country in terms of R & D, economy, competitiveness etc. We are facilitating and empowering people by providing information in order to fulfil their fundamental duties towards nation. And we can not afford compromise to function as copyright cops deviating from our core duty as information provider . Multinational Publishing houses can not expects us to do that but at the same time I am not saying that Library/ information professionals should be gross copyright violators. We will have to fight back keeping everything in mind to make our dream of Open Acess come true. Writely <http://www.writely.com/> is a free online word processor which was merged with google a while ago. It can also be used by a group of people to collaborate on a document.
