Need for research studies stressed (Deccan Herald, 29 Sep 2006) Bangalore, UNI: Knowledge Commission Chairman Sam Pitroda on Thursday called for more investments in research studies at the university level as India was at the top in terms of growth and position in the global economy. Mr Pitroda addressing aKnowledge Summit here, said that there was a need for students to take up research in human sciences but the latest trend showed that they opted for high salaried jobs just after completing their degree courses. Even the best brains are busy solving the problems of the rich and not of the poor, he said. They are interested in developing latest watches for the rich and solving the problems of high class banks, he added. "Our scientists with global knowledge should concentrate on solving the problems of the poor and the down trodden to improve the quality of their life," he said. Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju in his inaugural address said India was well positioned to grab the opportunities and take up the challenges in the field of knowledge management. Dear Professionals and friends, SALIS(Society for the Advancement of Library and Information Science) is going to organise an UNESCO sponsored one week Sub-National Workshop on Information Literacy Competency Development for Special Educators and Library Professionals at Chennai from 6th-10th Nov 2006. There is no participation and other fee for the selected candidates. Boarding and lodging also will be arranged. Digital archiving gains new tool -- Web Curator

The new tool automates the process of harvesting online content and storing it. The Web curator tool will be available to other organisations as an open source release by the end of the year. Professor Taylor added: "In addition to being a valuable scientific resource, the journal archives are also a rich historical record documenting a time which is hard to imagine given the knowledge we have today." The digital archive contains papers documenting the discovery of new planets, the first descriptions of organisms through a microscope, and the first account of photography. Early journal papers contain fascinating descriptions of how Captain James Cook preserved the health of his crew aboard the HMS Endeavour and the astonishment of 18th century Society by the performance of a eight year-old Mozart.
