Dear All The Central Library, IIT Bombay in collaboration with Max Muller Bhavan, Mumbai is organizing a half day's program on "Innovative Services for Special Libraries". Dr R.Ball, Head of the Central Library of Research Centre Jülich, Germany will be the main speaker. Dr Ball has been in the profession of Library Science since 1994 and has served both as a teacher of library science as well as a librarian. The programme also includes a presentation on the recently launched, Institutional Repository of IIT Bombay and a couple of product demos. The Library and Information Science Professionals serving in academic, scientific, technical and research libraries may find the programme interesting and useful for their work. Registration is free. ASIST SIG III InfoShare Membership Award Winners

Dear Colleagues, On behalf of Vika Kravchyna, co-coordinator of the InfoShare program, and all our fellow officers of the Special Interest Group for International Information Issues (SIG-III) of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIST), I am pleased to announce the winners of the InfoShare awards for 2007. (http://www.asis.org/SIG/SIGIII/index.htm) Information professionals from developing countries, where the cost of ASIST membership would be a burden, are eligible to receive one year of membership. SIG-III officers vote on a roster of candidates nominated by ASIST colleagues or others. Dear All, Wish you a very happy and peaceful new year! New Year is the time to make new beginnings and seek new blessings for happiness, peace and prosperity. We at M. D. Ahuja Library, Hashu Advani College of Special Education, Mumbai, believe that its a time to launch a comprehensive, timely and competitive, professional journal in the field of library science namely, Hello Librarian. Hello Librarian is a quarterly journal that intends to publish original articles, research papers, special articles, book reviews, editorials and others. Or try us with a new category of article- we are flexible. But dont expect a free ride just because we are new. The journal is new but our vision and experience are time-tested. The journal will be founded as well on reader advocacy. Readers time is extraordinarily valuable and we have no interest in wasting it by publishing useless articles. There will be a team of experienced and dedicated editors who will edit all the articles cautiously before publishing them. So there is nothing to worry about quality and excellence. Open access essential to improve information exchange

Swaminathan Research Foundation Date: 11 January 2007 We fully support Donat Agosti's contention that open access is the only way for publicly-funded research to be shared not only between the North and South, but also between developing countries (see 'Free access to research should not be limited'). It is also our view that UN-supported projects like the Online Access to Research in the Environment, Health Internetwork Access to Research Initiative and Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture initiatives only provide 'sticking plaster' solutions to information deprivation. Already, thousands of research articles are available without charge or restriction through nearly 800 registered repositories and approximately 2,500 open access journals worldwide. And the SPARC Open Access Newsletter shows that these numbers are accelerating fast. We do not understand why influential UN organisations such as the World Health Organization, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the UN Environment Programme whose remits are to support international health, agriculture and environmental programmes are not encouraging the open access movement. By concentrating on the above projects and working with commercial publishers, they hamper research into issues such as climate change, HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis and avian flu. Meeting these challenges requires strategies to increase information exchange. Why, then, are these agencies solely supporting programmes that have limited global beneficiaries? For example, countries like India with low gross domestic products are barred from collaboration. These agencies should also be working to promote open access to all publicly funded research information. As Agosti says, technological developments mean the future benefits of open access for scholarly communication are truly exciting. UNESCO is the only UN agency that seems to have understood the importance of open access having endorsed its use in the draft programme and budget for 2006-2007. We urge other UN agencies and key funding bodies around the world to follow suit.
