RSVP : 32471010 Wendy Hall is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Southampton in the UK and is currently the Head of the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS). She was the founding Head of the Intelligence, Agents, Multimedia (IAM) Research Group in ECS. She has published over 350 papers in areas such as hypermedia, multimedia, digital libraries, and Web technologies. She is currently senior Vice President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Vice President of the ACM and is a Past President of the British Computer Society (2003-04). She is a member of the Prime Minister's Council for Science and Technology, a member of the Executive Committee of UKCRC, chair of the new BCS Women's Forum an a non-executive Director of several companies and charitable trusts. She is the Chair of the Advisory Board of the new company, Garlik Limited.She was also recently appointed as a founding member of the Scientific Council of the European Research Council. She was awarded a CBE in the Queen's Birthday honours list in 2000, and became a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in the same year. She is also a Fellow of the British Computer Society, the Institute of Engineering and Technology (formerly the IEE) and the City and Guilds of London Institute. She was recently awarded the 2006 Anita Borg Award for Technical Leadership. In her talk "Towards a science of the Web", Dr Wendy Hall will discuss how hypertext visionaries foresaw a richly inter-linked global information network and how the Web provided the infrastructure to enable those ideas to become reality but strangely devoid of links. She will explain the development of the Semantic Web which promises a richly linked future and will enable more intelligent information retrieval. She will look at how the Web evolved from its early simple incarnation to the massive global information structure it is today, and how search engines enable us to make sense of this very complex environment. There is a growing realization among many researchers that if we want to model the Web and understand its future trajectory; if we want to understand the architectural principles that have provided for its growth and the applications they enable; and if we want to be sure that it supports the basic social values of trustworthiness, privacy, and respect for social boundaries, then we must chart out a research agenda that targets the Web as a primary focus of attention. Dear Sir/Madam, International patent applications received from developing countries in 2006 saw a 27.6% increase as compared to 2005, representing 8.2% of all international patent applications filed. This is largely due to the filings from the Republic of Korea (5,935)and China (3,910), followed by India (627), Singapore (402), South Africa (349), Brazil (265) and Mexico (150).
