New technology for printing books one at a time

Hello, I would like to bring your notice to a service we have recently introduced in India - print-on-demand service. This allows us to print one copy of a book at a time thus totally avoiding the need to invest in 1000 copies of book as is usually the case when books are printed using the traditional method of printing. As expected, the unit cost of a book is high. For example, a 200 page book of size 8 x 5 with a coloured cover, perfect binding and lamination costs Rs. 175/-. Compare this with the unit cost of a book when it is printed using the offset method and you will find a vast difference. A similar book can cost Rs. 40/- using the offset method on condition that you print 1000 copies. However, if you want only 1 copy or only 10 copies of the book either because they are lecture notes compiled together for a class, or because it is a collection of papers saved for future reference or because it is dissertation published handsomely in a book format, it really does not make sense to invest 40000/- (40 x 1000). A better option would therefore be to have it printed and published using the print-on-demand method where one copy would cost Rs. 175/- and 10 would cost Rs. 1750/-. Although we had never imagined such a use for this technology, a chance visit to the Central Library in Panaji, Goa, enlightened us on what this might be put to us. The Library has manuscripts dating back to pre-portuguese times that visitors to the library often wish to visit. These manuscripts and books are sometimes too delicate to leave in the hands of readers. We are therefore in talks with the library to have these works scanned and have one copy printed so that the copy can be referred to. Copyrights will of course be taken care of during the exercise. The process of having a book published is simple and allows authors to freely publish their books and manuscripts and distribute it themselves. We believe we have democratized the process of publishing and made it easy for authors to save their work for posterity. Call for Indian LIS research proposals "Supporting the dissemination of knowledge for social good in India" Emerald is offering research grant for an Indian project in the field of library and information science (LIS). The funding award will amount to up to £2,000 (US$4,200 equivalent). Applications should address the dissemination of knowledge for social good with a specific orientation toward benefit for India. Eligibility: At least one member of the research team must be based in India. Judging criteria Each application will be judged, by a panel of experts, on the five criteria below. The research must: * Be of significance, particularly illustrating how it will benefit the social good. * Demonstrate originality and innovation. * Make an outstanding contribution to theory and its application. * Illustrate the appropriateness and application of the methodology. * Demonstrate sound implications for theory and practice. Application requirements Each proposal, to arrive either by post or by e-mail, must contain: 1. A summary stating specific goals, outcomes and benefits of the research. This should not exceed 2,000 words (note that tables, figures, appendices and reference lists, if provided do NOT count to the 2,000 word total). 2. A covering letter containing contact details for all researchers involved in the project. Please state clearly which researcher will be the main point of contact. The 2,000-word summary must: * Display clearly a statement of purpose and intent. * State clearly the methodology(ies) applied and explicitly describe the research process. * State expected research outcomes and expected impact and possible application. * Specify the expected timescales of the research process. * Outline projected costs and total research grant required. ONIX International refers to a standard format that publishers can use to distribute electronic information about their books to wholesale, e-tail and retail booksellers, other publishers, and anyone else involved in the sale of books. ONIX enables book information to be communicated between different organizations even if they have different technical infrastructures and business needs. It isn't a database, but provides a standard XML template for organizing data storage. BLIS Revision at IGNOU

It is a bold step. However, it is the time when universities should discontinue BLISc course (as they did at the time of introducing BLIS/BLISc in place of diploma) and introduce 2 years MLISc course. This will certainly give opportunities to increase the depth of the content, reduce duplication and include new topics. Does any expert on recruitment/promotion committee ask questions to even a fresh professional considering the fact that the candidate has only BLISc degree? LIS departments are expected to impart the necessary library and information skills to their students so that the student can to function effectively in libraries and other information-related work environment with minimum supervision.
