Respected Professionals, I am very new in the profession but i feel there is need for the thrust of knowledge in our professional for establishing thenselves among the other professions. see we all always worried abt the standard of our professionals with respect to the knowledge and compatibility with the newly emerged knowledge and trends.dont you all thinks at one side we worried abt that all and another side if any of us wants to upgrade themselves with any parttime courses we restrict them, i think this is the dual mentality. i feel our existance is still like a storekeepers, if we truely wanna to make people realise importance of our profession and ourselves we encourage the like peoples to learn and updated more for survival. Phd is not only a need for increment but also for knowledge. you all are senior and most respectful to me but i would like to say thet if u all see the reality we are (not all) legging behind. all the professions allow their professionals to join the training and courses but in case of us all upper level people think there is no need to librarians for training and other expertise. do some thing positive , if we not choose to lead, we always led by others. If Universities deny part time research and belittle Open University degrees and part-time degrees, we could lose several real professionals in our field. Such draconian laws by Universities make us doubt that we are still in the Stone Age. The real life story of Dr. Konnur from library attender to University Librarian is more motivating than 1000s of motivational literature and a blast to the dark forces which deny the right of knowledge seekers. Few other Centres in SSS and SIS of JNU also invite PhD applications for interdisciplinary studies, where qualified librarians (MLIS) can fit into. Written accession register mandatory?

Dear Sudarsan, We are following the parallal practice of maintaining Accn Register virtual and manual since last 3 yrs. We take print out of Accn register from Libsys everyday/after accessioning and get the printouts bound for the period April to March. We had submitted the same to AICTE during the visit. Similarly one may keep the same on CD/s and preserve. I think AICTE or similar body is concerned about the contents and physical presence of Accn Register and not the media. Bhagyashree J. Dear All the Parochial (*Narrow-minded/Close minded/unsophisticated*) Careerist aspirant Librarians, I strongly protest the words used by (Dr?)Mr. Rajashekharan *(**parochial careeristic aspiration of a few under-employed librarians). *The meaning of these word denotes that *Unsophisticated underpositioned who are aspiring for their increments and promotions* and the word "*underemployed librarians*" also denote that * "Undeserved"* (If my meaning is wrong any one may correct me). I do not know how Mr. rajashekharan has raised to the position he holds and what INTERNATIONAL STANDARD SCHOOL he has been produced from. But to my knowledge most of the contemporary Librarians have joined their services either after their Masters Degree level and some of them like me have joined at a lower cadre in Libraries and did their Basic degrees and Professional degrees during their service. (I agree that some of the open universities have spoiled the quality of LIS education, but not IGNOU). I am an example for that, I joined as an Attender in Department of Public Libraries in Karnataka and raised step by step by acquiring degrees (Evening Cources) and professional course by deputation to a regular course and completed Part time PhD in Library Public Relations. Entire country has seen my expertice and initiatives done in Goa University and Bangalore University as University Librarian. I was also selected by the Fulbright Foundation as a Scholar in the year 2002-03 If (Dr?)Mr. Rajashekharan wants to challenge my knowledge content, I am ready. My another question to Mr. Rajashekharan is that: Are these so called standard Universities which are helping for advancing fronteres of knowledge have done away with part time research in all the subjects or only for Library Science? If an Assistant Registrar or any non teaching employee of these standard Universities desires to register for his doctorate degree in Social Science subjects, is he permitted to do or not? If yes for the above question, why not for Librarians? Mr. Rajashekharan, using standard English Language will not elevate a Librarians to a higher standards. He need to serve people with dedication and gain their confidence. This work can be done by any *parochial careeristic aspirant and under-employed librarians. *If you want to witness this kind of service, please visit my Library during your visit to Bangalore on 19th of July 08. Dear LIS forum members Technological developments have restructured all the age old practices and conventional working systems in every realm of human endeavor. Library science is no exception to these transformations. The disappearance of the conventional catalogue cards from the scenario is an example. I have my own doubts as to whether it is mandatory to maintain a written accession register in a library. Does AICTE or other bodies insist on written accession register in libraries? Now most of the software's are having an option to print stock register. Friends please open up. Part-time Ph.D work

Dear LIS Professionals, I have gone through all the comments regarding part-time research. Undoubtedly, such a debate is welcoming one. Only thing I like to point out here that we must be careful in using the language. It should not hurt the feelings of others, whether they are in favour or against of part-time research. The aim of research is not only to earn a Ph.D degree. One may carry out research not merely for obtaining a Ph.D degree but for the purpose of advancing the frontiers of knowledge. We can cite a good number of contributions of LIS professionals in this direction in India and abroad. These contributions have the qualities that deserve our respect, attention and admiration. The contents of LIS have been enriched by these contributions. In respect of Ph D in LIS, personally I feel that the scope of part-time research for LIS professionals should be there since the LIS is an applied discipline and the LIS professional can find out the answer(s) to the research question(s) they faced while practicing the profession. This, in turn, will enrich the different facets of LIS. In this context, I like to draw the attention of our LIS professionals to the following fact: Emanating from the consensus emerged in the National Conference of Vice-Chancellors, organised by the UGC on 10-11 October, 2007, Prof. Sukhadeo Thorat, Chairman, UGC in a letter D.O.No.F.1-2/2008 (XI Plan) dated January 31, 2008 addressed to the Vice-Chancellor urged upon all the universities to initiate the process of implementing academic reforms as incorporated in the 11th Plan of the UGC. In regard to the M.Phil and Ph.D degrees, it has been stated in the said letter that “the M.Phil and Ph.D programmes need to be made formal. Admission to these programmes should be based on combined merit of entrance examination and interviews conducted by the respective universities. The informal methods currently used in some universities for admission to Ph.D. need to be discontinued and the admission methods to these high level research courses should be made formal and transparent. There is a need to introduce course work in Ph.D, rather than making it only dissertation/thesis based”. With the receipt of this letter, many universities are toying with the idea of discontinuation of part-time Ph.D work and introduction of the course-based full-time Ph.D work. Discussions on Part time research and Negative publicity

Dear professional friends, I have been watching the postings that came under the heads "Negative publicity" as well as "Part time research". The discussions on part time research opportunity itself is creating a chance for negative publicity. People who are arguing in a professional forum for something should use polite language. I appreciate the intervention of a senior librarian Dr. Konnur, Bangalore University. Please make this forum a place for fruitful discussions only. Do you know how useful the postings regarding the job opportunities for youngsters? In this juncture, I would like to add something too. The University of Kerala (or the Department of Library and Information Science, KU)has never shown a lenient approach to working librarians. With due respect to my alma-mater, I should say that they have not recognized the courses conducted by any of the universities through distance mode (including IGNOU). This may be the case with other universities too. But why the teachers in those departments go for paper valuations and related jobs? If they are worried about the quality of teaching through distance mode tell the policy makers to change things. Many who responded have already talked with emotions. Let us stop this somewhere!
