by रमाकांत नवघरे 13 Nov '08

13 Nov '08

To, Respected All, The users of Gmail service can now choose to communicate with friends not only through chat and e-mail but also through voice and video. To use this free service, users just need a webcam and a small Web browser plugin to start video chatting. And, those without a webcam can use an audio chat option, says Google. To get started, open a Gmail chat window, click on the 'Options' menu at the bottom and choose 'Add voice/video chat', which will walk you through a one-time installation of a free plugin. When you re-open Gmail, you'll notice your 'Options' link in your chat window has changed to 'Video & more'. Open this menu and click 'Start video chat' to start chatting. You can pop out the video and change its size and position, or switch to full screen. Gmail voice and video chat is being rolled out over the next day or so on PCs and on Macs. Google Apps customers get this service as well, at no extra charge, and can voice or video chat with any other Gmail or Apps users. To use voice and video chat, your PC must have Windows XP or a more recent version, or an Intel-Based Mac with Mac OS X v10.4 or later. It works in browsers that support the latest version of Gmail (Google Chrome, Firefox 2.0+, Internet Explorer 7.0 and Safari 3.0). SCOAP3: From Subscriptions to an Open Access Publishing Model
by Mailing List Admin 12 Nov '08

12 Nov '08

Dear Members, The following message is being posted on behalf of Jens Vigen of CERN. - Moderator NCSI, IISc Bengaluru ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Wed, 12 Nov 2008 14:11:28 +0100 From: Jens Vigen <jens.vigen(a)cern.ch> ------------------SCOAP3: From Subscriptions to an Open Access Publishing Model Join us for an information meeting on SCOAP3, an innovative Open Access publishing model which has the potential to put scholarly communication on sound sustainable bases. SCOAP3 is an effort to facilitate Open Access publishing building on the long Open Access tradition of the field of High Energy Physics and its track-record in international co-operation, epitomized by the LHC accelerator at CERN. SCOAP3 has three objectives: • Convert the peer-reviewed literature of an entire field to Open Access; • Stimulate competition in scientific publishing by linking quality and price; • Enable considerable medium- and long-term savings in scholarly communication The example of SCOAP3 could be rapidly followed by other fields, directly related to High Energy Physics, and its success can offer a potential model for other fields as well. The guiding principle of SCOAP3 is to re-direct subscription funds to directly pay for the peer-review and other editorial services, making articles free to read for everyone in any possible repository. SCOAP3 has so far collected commitments for over a half of its projected budget envelope [http://scoap3.org/fundraising.html] from a dozen countries in Europe, North America and the Middle East[http://www.scoap3.org/whoisscoap3.html]. In order to make the initiative a success, a broad worldwide consensus is now needed, and Indian and Asian libraries have a unique, pivotal, role to play. Learn more about the initiative, how libraries of all size can join the global effort in making SCOAP3 happen, and how to lend your support to promote Open Access. The event will be presented by Salvatore Mele, SCOAP3 Project Leader and Jens Vigen, Chief Scientific Information Officer at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland. 03.00 – 05.30 p.m. (Venue: The Auditorium) India Islamic Cultural Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi, India Registrations for this event is free, please send your confirmation at the following address or below given email.
