Interesting Finding about Internet Searching

UCLA scientists have found that for computer-savvy middle-aged and older adults, searching the Internet triggers key centers in the brain that control decision-making and complex reasoning. The findings demonstrate that Web search activity may help stimulate and possibly improve brain function. The study, the first of its kind to assess the impact of Internet searching on brain performance, is currently in press at the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and will appear in an upcoming issue. Notification No. RGUHS/ULIC/PGDHL/22/2008-2009 dated 27.09.2008 Applications are invited from eligible candidates for admission to One Year Postgraduate Diploma Course In Health Science Librarianship (PGDHL) for the academic year 2008-09 (December 2008 to November 2009) at Department of Health Science Library and Information Systems in Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore. ELIGIBILITY 1. A candidate who has passed Masters Degree in Library & Information Science (M.L.I.Sc.) examination of any University established by law in India or any other degree recognized as equivalent for this purpose and scored not less than 55% of the maximum marks prescribed for the qualifying examination. 2. Librarians having M.L.I.Sc. Degree or equivalent qualifications with minimum 50% of marks and minimum of five years experience in a Health Science Library. 3. For SC/ST Category-1 candidates, the minimum prescribed percentage of marks will be relaxed by 5% DURATION: The course of study including submission of project work is one year. ENTRANCE TEST: The Entrance Test will be held for eligible candidates on 18.11.2008 at 11-00 a.m. in the Department of Health Science Library and Information Systems, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, 4th T block, Jayanagar, Bangalore-560 041. INTERVIEW: The interview for successful candidates in the Entrance Test will be held on 18-11-2008 at 3-30 p.m. STIPEND: The first five selected candidates on merit shall be provided the stipend of Rs. 5000/- per month during the course period. The second five selected candidates on merit shall be sponsored/deputed by the managements of the Health Science Institutions. Dear profesionals I am pleased to annouce a Seminar on Open Access to Textual and Multimedia Content: Bridging the Digital Divide, January 29-30, 2008 at India Habitat Centre,New Delhi. It is Jointly Organized by INFLIBNET and CEC Objectives: 1. To review current trends and developments in e-content management, ICT applicable to development and dissemination of educational resources through open access 2. To examine and evaluate the existing activities, services and functionalities of the two organisations; 3. To identify areas of activities that the two organisations can take up in collaborative fashion with its existing infrastructure and expertise; 4. To examine Web 2.0 and Library 2.0 tools and technologies and examine possibilities of deploying them in activities and services of two organizations; and 5. To explore improved means and methods of providing textual and multimedia scholarly contents to the academic community. The Seminar will have evaluative presentations by invited speakers only on the core objectives followed by panel discussion on the subject consisting of expert panellists in media, library and information science and ICT. On the 2nd day of the seminar there could be Open House discussion or the participants depending on their preferences will join one of the 4 to 5 Work Groups to discuss various themes and sub-themes of the seminar and evolve recommendations and follow-up actions for the two institutions. The scope and contents of the seminar can further be expanded depending on the feed-back received from the participants consisting of user community in academia. The most feasible solution for preservation and enhancing the accessibility to documents is certainly Digitization. But this is a costly and time consuming proposition. Easier alternative is lamination with tissue paper and cellulose acetate foil which we procured from the National Archive of India. You may write to the Director, National Archive of India and enquire concerning certain schemes under which financial grants are made available for preservation. Dear LIS Forum members I wish to seek your advice regarding preservation of books. Here, in my library, the most demanded books are getting dilapidated due to constant use. Normally we get the books bounded when they becomes dilapidated. But after binding the books lose their beauty and freshness. Hence, we plan to wrap the books with transparent plastic sheet. Is it a feasible solution? My question is how to extend the freshness of books/give extra life to books. Please advice Rafi.S.M Asst. Librarian PAACET Trivandrum.
