November 27, 2008: Make the EducationSystem More Interactive and Dynamic: Prof. R.C. Sobti, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University said in his PresidentialAddress at the Inaugural Session of the XXV IATLIS NationalConference that it is high time that we make our educationalprogrammes interactive and dynamic. There should be a fair blendingof teaching and learning style and a teacher is required to play therole of a parent in the formal and informal settings. Earlier, Prof.Jagtar Singh, the Keynote Speaker and the Dean Faculty of Educationand Information Science, Punjabi University, Patiala said that thereis an immediate need for a shift from rote learning to resource-based student-centred-learning. The LIS courses must be affordableand consistent with the emerging job market. He further said that thefaculty must be deeply committed to internalize employable skillsamong the students. Prof. S.L. Sharma, the Chief Guest said that theLIS curricula should be based on the top-down and bottom-up approach.He further emphasized that there is a need to encourag! e students toask questions and actively participate in discussions. Prof. AshuShokeen, Director of the Conference said that efforts must be made tomake the LIS programmes relevant, effective, innovative and dynamic.Prof. C. R. Karisiddappa, President of Indian Association of Teachersof Library and Information Science (IATLIS) explained the mandate andthe activities of IATLIS and said that we must repay the LISprofession by developing employable manpower. Commercialization and privatization of educationis taking place in favour of the elite professions like medicine,engineering and business management, whereas, the social sciencesubjects including library and information science are being pushedto the periphery. There is an immediate need to make our coursesrelevant to the job market to stay in the main stream. More and moreempirical research should be done to generate valuable information toinform social science programmes. He further said that resourcecrunch will be increasing day by day but this does not mean th! at wecompromise on quality of education and training. Our teaching methodsshould be based on the blending of traditional teaching methods andICT-based teaching methods because ICT can help us in the functionalareas but not in the basic understanding of the subject. He alsoemphasized that the relationship between the tradition and modernityshould be complementary and not competitive. Speaking at thisoccasion Prof. C. R. Karisiddappa, President of IATLIS said that theLIS faculty is required to develop the employable skills among thefuture professionals. He further emphasised that there is animmediate need to change the faculty mindset to strengthen the IndianAssociation of Teachers of Library and Information Science (IATLIS)he lementered that only 30 % of the faculty is member of the IATLIS.It is high time that we ask ourselves that what we have given to theIATLIS. FW: Corporate Librarians and special training?

Dear All Last week, I was in an SLA-Asian Chapter conference in Delhi. And one of the sessions was focused on the role of LIS Career and Opportunities. S M Dhawan, former Scientist F, National Physical laboratory, stressed on the three things that would help quality output from the LIS schools in India and one of the key points that he mentioned was lack of 'Best Intake' in this field. He stressed that the profession is still the last career option for many. What is required is that our LIS Schools have to 1) attract best minds in the field and 2) give them best possible training (matching IIT and IIM level). I am sure if these two things are strictly and honestly implemented, the output will be of world class. I have never come across information like LIS departments are training students as corporate librarians. But then yes there is no harm preparing LIS students the way corporations do function. We all know that libraies are always a non-profit institution be it in the corporations. But then nothing is free even in academic libraries. Even if you provide free service to your customer, there is a cost attached to it; for ex: your salary, real estate value, etc. I appreciate what Anita Pujari of DNA has done to the library services by attaching notional value to the information products / service that she provides to her customer. This is the value that she has added for what she does. So, it is the attitude/value/culture that makes corporations better. And I think we must inculcate such values/culture in LIS students. I do agree with what Anand says in terms of skilling the freshers. I WOULD say that there is a big gap in skills we need in the industry [for academic & special libraries and LIS teachers] and the output we get from the LIS schools. LIS schools have leveraging the technology and new crop of Information schools are in a way modeled to survive in the information rich world. Syllabuses of some of the information schools can throw some lights on how LIS schools can tune their curriculum to prepare their graduates in the 21st century.? Good thing is that library school basics have not changed lot-then why LIS departments prepare corporate librarians. It is a very good piece to start a proactive discussion on the status or magnitude of the ills mentioned by him, the possible options for revival and the strategic steps the fellow professionals or a cohesive group can take to cure the ills. Libraries or institutions having local area network (LAN) can think of using Drupal (or Joomla or similar one) for creating an intranet website that provides information content to the institutional users through a website- like a gateway. Drupal requires apache, mysql & php software - all installed and configured in the computer. The configuration of those software may fail at times. So the easier option for a beginner is to use Xampp software that includes all the three software. So any beginner who is interested to learn Drupal can do so by installing it even in a client computer by using Xampp. The advantage of the content Management System is that we can have local language content and can make search /retrieval, if the information is in Unicode font. By using the same Xampp installation, one can install Wiki software also in the same computer and can develop an internal Wikipedia for creation of frequently used local content for internal users. Even reading materials on key topics can be made available in LAN by using internal Wiki. Media Wiki is a reasonable choice among a wide range of Wiki software available for download. Having an internal Wiki may help the users in learning the process of editing the content in Wikipedia. So the creative users may eventually turn themselves as contributors of Wikipedia, the fastest growing segment in the digital world. Librarians, thus, can have partnership in building the knowledge repository by showing the users a method to build digital knowledge resource. Moodle is an E-Course Management software one can install in the same computer by using the same Xampp installation. Libraries can use it for offering compensatory or additional courses on topics of special interest among the users, with the help of library friendly academics or library professionals themselves. The installation of Drupal or Wiki can be done in the similar manner. Open Journal System is yet another similar tool, the librarians should look into.
