Online Library Management Software - CR2 Technologies
by Dhwaneet Mehta 25 Dec '08

25 Dec '08

Dear Sir / Madam, We are pleased to inform you that we have launched Asia's first SaaS based Library Management Software. CYBRARIAN – is a next generation web based, seamless & fully integrated Library Management software System hosted on a Remote Server. This is based on SaaS (Software as a Service) concept where users have to pay –as-you-use basis. CYBRARIAN allows the librarians to access & run the software with the help of an ordinary low cost PC having a web browser and they can carry out on line all the transactions like Acquisition, Cataloguing, Circulation, Periodicals Management (PMS), Article Indexing, Reports Management etc. as if the entire application is running on their desk. One can access the application anytime (24x7x365) from anywhere, & from any machine with built in webOPAC facility in the software. At a very low hosting fee, CYBRARIAN provides users facilities like Software Usage, Secured Data Storage & Management, Virus Protection, Backups, Patch Management, Product Updates, Technical Support, Maintenance etc. CYBRARIAN follows all the international standards like MARC21, Z39.50, AACR2, MARCXML, ISO 2079 etc. and is having UNICODE (Multilingual) facility. The most attractive feature of CYBRARIAN is that librarians or Resource Centre Manager can customize the application as per their requirements without the help or need from the software vendor. Moreover, the reports can also be self-customized. CYBRARIAN also allows the member libraries to form or create their own network of libraries from similar related subjects/background/industries for resource sharing by collecting, storing & disseminating information and would offer networked services like information about resources scattered in the libraries throughout the world, referencing materials to meet the requirements of students, researchers, scholars & the general public, Inter Library Loan etc. without incurring any extra cost. For further details, you requested to please visit our website www.cybrarian.in. In case of any query, please do contact us. Awaiting your earliest reply. Thanking you, Regards Dhwaneet Mehta Regional Manager CR2 Technologies Ltd. Regarding Open Source Tools
by Md. Zahid Hossain Shoeb 24 Dec '08

24 Dec '08

Dear Professionals, There are many posts we use to get now regarding Open Source Tools with cooperative approach from different IT skilled LIS professionals. Anyway, I consider that the ultimate challenge is the customization according to the organization as per their requirements and changed requirement which is time related task and a matter of system analysis. For a sustainable and consistent system it is required different phases like planning, setting, access management, implementation etc. The total thing is a matter of project management with professional approach from requirement analysis to testing after designing even documentation. So, the whole thing is not a task of one day or one week or even one month. When technology appears at market, whimsically it is not wiseful to use in case of specially repositories, e-Learning, CMS and automation tool; though the popular technology which are cited by different members of the forum are widely used. I think, before setting-up or using any technology always initiate to a team consisting of administration and staff of the library of the organization and information technology professionals with mature as well as professional outlook. Moreover, each member can contribute expertise on how the system should operate and the features required, i.e. for repositories – feature of the services (metadata, submission workflow, content types, etc.) or underlying technical issues (operating system, databases, search mechanisms, etc.) or even the policies and legal issues for the collections. So, no shortcut technique will be effective in this case for long run, not only installation or a little customization will perform all the tasks, it can be a pilot task of starting the main tasks or project. A 'Gantt chart' should be followed for designing a system lifecycle. For better information literate community it is needed long term sustainable, consistent and coherent system with matured working process. Regards, Md. Zahid Hossain Shoeb Independent University, Bangladesh -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Anomalies in the UGC Sixth Pay Review Committee Report and Removal of disparities in promotion and benefits to Librarians in Colleges and Universities – Representation submitted
by Pandurang Konnur 24 Dec '08

24 Dec '08

Dear Professional Friends, I take this opportunity to congratulate all the academic Librarians for having got the VIth PRC Recommendations approved by Government of India. During the last V Pay Commission Recommendations and their implementations there was a great amount of disparity between Teachers and Librarians. Hence Librarians were to suffer for one full decade to get their grievances redressed. This time thanks to the PRC members and Prof. Chaddha the Chairman of PRC who gave ear to our voice and recommended parity for Librarians with that of teachers. Friends, still there are few anomalies exist and IALA has already submitted its memorandum to the Ministry of HRD, Secretary HRD and Chairman UGC. The full text of the memorandum may be accessed in the following URL: http://iala.org.in/subfiles/prc.pdf I request all the members of this form to go through the memorandum and give their feed back to IALA with additional input to prepare and submit further memorandums to the competitive authorities. Thanks, -- Dr.P.V.Konnur Fulbright Fellow (University of Illinois) University Librarian, Bangalore University Library, Jananabharati, Bangalore-560056 Phone: 080-22961131, 23215510 Website: http://library.bub.ernet.in -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
