A refreshing welcome to new members by Karnataka State Library Association (KALA) - A Report on KALA's new members meet (fwd)
by Byrappa, Ananda (GE, Research) 19 Feb '09

19 Feb '09

Dear LIS Professionals, Karnataka State Library Association (KALA) had organized 'new members' meet' recently in Bangalore. Following is the brief report on the event. Ananda Byrappa General Secretary, Karnataka State Library Association (KALA) http://www.kalaonline.com ________________________________________________________________________ A refreshing welcome to new members by Karnataka State Library Association Young, fresh and eager faces, matching smiles on older faces....this was the refreshing scene at the new members gathering at the National Centre for Science Information (NCSI) in the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Campus on Friday, February 6th 2009. The evening's programme had been well orchestrated by the Karnataka State Library Association (KALA) core team and that certainly paid dividends in the enthusiasm and keen involvement shown by the large gathering present there. The main speakers were Prof. V.G. Talwar, recently appointed Vice Chancellor of Mysore University and Mr.N.V. Satyanarayana, Director of Informatics India Ltd. Both have had an amazing trajectory of growth in the profession; Prof. Talwar reaching the highest pinnacle in the academic arena while Mr. Satyanarayana has achieved it in the applications to the business world. However, the most significant characteristic of each one of them is their humility combined with hard work and discipline, which became apparent to all as they spoke. Their talks were truly an invaluable learning for all professionals in the field and so it was for young and old as we listened to their inspiring presentations that memorable evening. Prof. Talwar succinctly covered the essential and vital signs that every librarian must possess.. His compact and concise package touched upon the qualities of leadership, discipline, hard work and above all a smiling friendly face that users can relate to. The skills of communication, the ability to use language articulately and the need for a belief in oneself were also highlighted by him. In addition, he said, each one of us must become a PRO and even acquire marketing and managerial skills to best serve the user and the institution. He ended by wishing KALA all success in their future programmes for the professionals and friends of the library. Mr. Satyanarayana congratulated the marketing techniques of the young KALA team which had set goals and reached them. He appreciated their acumen in setting time targets because without that, plans remain as dreams and never touch reality. He exhorted the young librarians to go in for an image makeover since the work that they do is sometimes high-jacked by other IT professionals and they rise much faster than library professionals. Therefore it is vital that librarians take stock of their assets and present themselves in a more attractive package! One question he posed had us all thinking. What is the advantage that a library has over Google or any online information service? The answer was a revelation. Physical space! This is a very crucial aspect because users can actually meet, discuss and come up with many other possibilities for social and cultural interaction by using this real space. He also reminded us that as librarians we do have a strong feeling of connectivity. As he said, no other group of professionals seems to have such a vibrant system of group gatherings. Therefore it is up to us to make use of this strength in the best possible way. Anand Byrappa, the indefatigable Secretary of KALA introduced the speakers and described some of the activities of the Association including the creation of the website. The President, Prof. Ravichandra Rao welcomed the gathering and shared the many exciting plans that KALA has for the next few months. He also told the members to expect only email communication in future! The Vice-President, Mr. Francis Jayakanth rounded off the excellent evening with a well-worded vote of thanks. ___________________________________________________________ Report Compiled by: Mrs. Usha Mukunda, Vice President, KALA -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean. -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Dear all, Regarding point raised by Dr Vinod Mishra and details given by Dr.G.K.Manjunath, I would like to raise point attract attention towards points related to the ongoing issue - 1. It was in 1995 when I attended my first national workshop where the cost/participant was Rs 4000/- excuding fooding/lodging. Recently I had privilage of attending a workshop with participants strength close to 90 participants. However organizers were putting expected participants to be 30. So point is irrelevant to rationalize organizing cost/participant. So the organizers must have been in profit, put aside the quality and attention to participants. 2. If some how the organizers are able to cut cost to reasonable level then more no of participates would automatically be attracted. This would raise a situation where there could be negotiations with the quality. Workshops are great instruments in keeping professionals abreast with latest trends and issues. Organizers of such workshops are doing marvelous jobs by taking such initiatives. We should come at a level where there is balance between the cost and the quality. The solution could be more workshops at places which have been left overlooked, yet not at the cost of quality. Reg. Cost of workshop on open source software
by vinod mishra 19 Feb '09

19 Feb '09

Dear professionals open source software is a kind of revolution for the benefit of the society perticularly in developing and underdeveloped country. These softwares are free of cost but institutions are organising the workshop on these softwares and charging very high cost which is very difficult to afford by individuals. So it must be avoided and the cost of such a workshop should be minimum. The current example is DELNET who is organising workshop on KOHA by charging 3000-3500, i think it is too much.Such workshop should not be organised for the financial benefits perticularly by the Govt. organisations. Delnet is charging lots of money for that. the cost of workshop is 3500 +Accomodation charges. is it possible for an organisation or individual to pay this much money for a free software. we only advocate free software but the training should also be provided free with the help of Govt. of India. The National Knowledge Commission has also advocated Open Acces. Now it is the turn of the professionals to think about that. Apurba Jyoti Majumder, JRF Deptt. of Library & Information Science. Thanks for providing detailed list of expences but could you also provide percentage of participants (i.e students and young financially week LIS professionals from school and colleges)who have paid from their own pocket (i.e non-sponsered by their institutes) in such a costy workshop. So in my view Don't give costy Kit, costy Lunch, Dinner and tea (Because my observation is it waste lot of time and hence reducing the actual time of learning the software). Sorry but it is heart burning truth in most of the confrences and workshop those peoples are facing lot of problems regarding the time, who realy wants to intract and learn. Example is for presenting paper organisers usullay gives 5-10 minutes but i practicall OBSERVED 2-3 min. IT REFLECT LACK OF DEVOTION TOWARDS THE LIS PROFESSION MANY PEOPLE ASKED HOW TO RAISE THE STATUS OF LIBRARIN IN MY VIEW "THE DAY WHEN WE WILL START THINKING HOW TO RAISE STATUS OF THE SOCIETY AND OUR LIBRARY USERS THROUGH LIBRARY, FROM THAT DAY ITSELF OUR STATUS WILL START RISING" VINOD KUMAR MISHRA IIT KANPUR 09335417961 On Thu, 19 Feb 2009 09:49:29 +0530 wrote > > >I would like to provide certain basic facts about the cost involved in >organizing a workshop.
