IMPLEMENTATION OF KOHA IN SCHOOL LIBRARIES
by soumi sanyal 05 Apr '09

05 Apr '09

DEAR PROFESSIONALS; Iam a school librarian working in Apeejay school,Salt Lake, Kolkata. Iam happy to inform that open source software Koha has proved to be a boon to me.Without investing a huge amount of money I have successfully implemented Koha for developing a complete integrated library system. Its easy to use and there is ample scope for modification according to your needs.School libraries should come forward and participate in this open source movement as its the only way to automate your library without spending a penny.Besides this school libraries can serve its future learners more effectively and provide them the feel of automation which they will normally feel in public, college and university libraries. -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

UGC mandatory qualification
by rajendra kumar panda 04 Apr '09

04 Apr '09

Dear listed members, Adding to recent discussion of UGC qualification for the post of Asstt. Librarian in college and university or similar grades in non academic library, UGC NET/SET qualification should be mandatory (according my opinion) to maintain the quality of service and job, NET/SET exams are higher standard in quality, there is no question of partiality and petting towards candidates, the met question papers are set by chosen top most LIS people and evaluation method is similar too. Besides one’s subject knowledge candidates must have general ability to think scientifically and logically to respond an environment judiciously and rationally. The functional credibility of some of Indian universities is well known to most of us. It is not much difficult to obtain M.Phill / Ph.D degree. In this process always there is nepotism and favoritism prevails. On other side, there are plenty of evidence people with having first class careers could not qualify LIS all India written tests conducted by various govt. bodies and most of the Govt appointed LIS professionals working in various top level positions are directly appointed on the basis of career and qualification marks. Since last two decades, there are hearing of dithering between UGC NET/SET relax and mandatory. Knowledge Commission of India is also suggested in favour of essentiality. I think every LIS people should prove their credentials by qualifying highest body exams. thanks -- R.K.Panda Librarian Kendriya Vidyalaya -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Scrutinizing LIS-Forum posting
by Baban Chavan 03 Apr '09

03 Apr '09

Respected, Dr.Gaudar I Fully agree with you sentiments. It is realy a troublsome job for moderator to go through the posting by members if it is not relevent & therefore every professional should always take care while posting their messages, as the professionals not from india but also from abroad reads the messages. However ,some of our people having a good contents but not written in good English or badly written shold not be ignored as we are non English people and even some professionals are not having English as their medium of instructions upto M.L.I.S. stage so they are poor in English. Therefore these type of messages must be cosidered with moderators editing and approval as there may be regional impact due to regional languges.
