Introducing DuraSpace - an organization creating open technologies for durable digital content.
by ramesh chander 14 May '09

14 May '09

Dear friends, Fedora Commons and the DSpace Foundation, two of the largest providers of open source software for managing and providing access to digital content, are joining their organizations to pursue a common mission. Jointly, they will provide *leadership and innovation* in open source technologies for global communities who manage, preserve, and provide access to digital content. The joined organization, named "DuraSpace," will *sustain and grow* its flagship repository platforms - Fedora and DSpace. DuraSpace will also expand its portfolio by offering new technologies and services that respond to the dynamic environment of the Web and to new requirements from existing and future users. DuraSpace will focus on supporting existing communities and will also engage a larger and more diverse group of stakeholders in support of its not-for-profit mission. http://duraspace.org/index.html With Warm Regards, Romesh Chander National Center for Science Information(NCSI), Indian Institue of Science, Bangalore-560012. -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

All, Wanted to inform the list members of this open source federated search technology. Pazpar2 is developed by the same organization that developed the Zebra search technology used in Koha and other applications. More information is available here: http://www.indexdata.dk/pazpar2/. The technology can simultaneously query multiple target z39.50 servers, target servers can include: - Free online databases like Project Gutenberg - Paid online databases - z3950 compliant Library Systems like Koha It supports among other things flexible rules based merging, relevance ranking, record sorting, and faceted results. Future releases of Koha are expected to be tightly integrated with this technology. We have prepared a demo at this link, the demo is configured to search 3 databases - LOC z3950 server, Project Gutenberg & a Demo Koha installation. >From the results users can navigate to the electronic resource (Project Gutenberg) or to the Koha page of the particular item. http://pazpardemo.osslabs.biz/pazpar2/jsdemo/ Suggested Search Terms: Gandhi, India or Shakespeare Please contact me for further information about Pazpar2 or our services around this technology. NET STUDENTS FIND A SAVIOUR IN RTI
by ramesh chander 11 May '09

11 May '09

Dear friends, Every year millions of students take the National Eligibility Test (NET), which is mandatory for lectureship and award of junior research fellowship. Since the examinees are not allowed to keep the question paper, future aspirants often had a hard time preparing for the exam. But not anymore. They can now file an RTI application and get hold of the old test papers. The good news does not end here. They can also take the bi-annual test online. In a landmark order, the Central Information Commission (CIC) said that since exams are supposed to test the fundamentals of the students and not their rote learning, making a question bank available would not make any difference to the examining bodies. http://indiatoday.intoday.in/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3945… With Best Regards, Romesh Chander National Center for Science Information(NCSI), Indian Institue of Science, Bangalore-560012. -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
