The Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan, in collaboration with Toto Funds the Arts (TFA), is happy to invite you to a Literary Evening with award-winning German author Prof. Dr. Hans-Ulrich Treichel. The event takes the form of a Panel Discussion on Issues In Contemporary German and Indian Literatures. He now lives in Berlin and Leipzig. He was a student of German studies at the Free University of Berlin and obtained his doctoral degree on Wolfgang Koeppen. Since 1995 he is professor at the German Literature Institute, Leipzig. Hans-Ulrich Treichel has quickly developed a literary reputation in Germany for writing which has been lauded as readable, humorous and yet challenging. He enjoyed huge popular and critical success with the publication of his first major prose work, Der Verlorene (translated into English as Lost), in 1998. This work is a poignant re-working of an experience through which Treichel's own family went towards the end of the Second World War. This familial struggle with the past forms the core of Der Verlorene in particular, but his subsequent novels, Menschenflug [ A Man's Flight, 2005] and Anatolin (2008) also tackle this theme. Dr. Treichel has published widely on German literature of the modern period. Among many other awards he has received the Hermann Hesse Prize (2005) and Eichendorff Prize (2006). Bangalore Management Academy (BMA), Bangalore is organizing a ONE DAY WORKSHOP ON Intellectual Property Rights for the 21st Century Librarian on 24th October 2009. ABOUT THE WORKSHOP: Intellectual Property Rights have become crucial for knowledge economy workers with laws getting stricter on unauthorized use of published material and stringent on piracy in software. In India, patent laws and copyright laws have been amended to make them compatible to the TRIPS agreement under the WTO. What are the new issues in copyright and patents that today’s knowledge managers must be aware of? How do these laws protect intellectual development and catalyze the knowledge economy? What do librarians, students, writers and producers of knowledge need to watch out for when using other’s published material or when using software packages and databases? This workshop will discuss critical concerns relating to IPRs through lectures and discussions by leading academics and lawyers working in this area. Dear Professional, As you are aware, Greenstone Digital Library Software (GSDL), a free software developed by the University of Waikato, New Zealand, is a major Digital Library software in South Asian region. Different institutions/individuals are already developing Interfaces in some of the Indian languages. With a view to promoting further work on and practical applications of the software a survey of the institutions and individuals in South Asian region who are using or intending to use or have attended workshop(s) on the software or otherwise interested in GSDL, is being undertaken. This survey is mainly supported by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada. UNESCO, Paris and eIFL, Netherlands, are also promoting this software. The results of the survey will be made available to others also, on request. A survey instrument (for individuals and institutions) is made available online at: http://dharmaganja.ncsi.iisc.ernet.in/greenstone (for individuals) http://dharmaganja.ncsi.iisc.ernet.in/greenstone-inst (for institutions) The survey instrument consists of five parts: Personal Information, Digital Library Activities, Digital Library Support and Services, GSDL Use & Support and Organizational Structure of Future Digital Library Support organization.
