Dear Friends, Google Wends Its Way Into Web Annotation With Sidewiki Google on last Wednesday launched Sidewiki, a Web annotation tool that serves as a comment forum for Web pages. Sidewiki ranks entries according to their relevance, as determined by Google's own algorithm. It will also place those comments on Web pages that carry the information which sparked the comments. Dear Moderator, Kindly circulate the following workshop announcement among the members of the discussion forum. Sir Dorabji Tata Memorial Library, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai has organised a five day workshop on "Design and Development of Digital Libraries Using Open Source Software" in association with SAARC Documentation Centre, New Delhi from 14-18 December, 2009 at TISS Main Campus. Workshop Content: During the workshop participants will learn how to: create State-of-Art digital libraries using the Open Source Software, which include software installation, configuration, customization, digitization and other related workflow operations, content development and management, designing and creating standard metadata sets to describe digital objects and encoding it in standard markup formats. At the end of the training, participants will be able to create electronic publications with search and full text retrieval facility, and launch digital libraries/archives of full text, image, audio and video files accessible over the web. Objectives: 1. Today every organization needs to develop its own Digital Institutional Repository. The LIS professionals need training to develop these repositories. This workshop is organized to make them competent in using the software. 2. To familiarize participants with the concepts of digital library and usage of Open Source Software. 3. To offer hands on experience to develop digital libraries and use of Open Source Software like DSpace, GSDL, EPRINTS etc. 4. To offer hands on experience to install Linux OS and configuration, customization, backup/restore of Open Source Software. 5. To encourage the participants in developing their own Institutional Digital Libraries. Areas Covered: • Digital Libraries-current trends and status • Overview of IR, DL, Indian Initiatives • Installation of Fedora Core OS & RDBMS • Case studies and Scope of DSpace, GSDL, etc. • Customization, submission workflow, User customization etc . • Various Security Levels to effect restricted access • DSpace Administration, workflow • Dublin Core, and open standards • OAI-PMH • Handles persistent identifiers to each digital object in the repository • Unicode and Indian Languages Target Audience: Five day workshop is going to be attended by librarians from SAARC countries as well as local participants from various parts of the India. The workshop will be of immense benefit to all those involved in developing and maintaining digital libraries . The workshop is confined to limited number of 30 participants only. (15 participants from SAARC countries and 15 from India) Pedagogy: The workshop will be conducted at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai which is equipped with world class lecture rooms and Cyber Library with 6 Mbps Internet connectivity. Each participant will be provided a PC for practicals. The workshop comprises of lectures, demonstration and practice on the topics mentioned above. Cyber Library facilities are made available for practice to the participants during extended hours. The course material and application software will be distributed to the participants on CDs to enable them to install, work and make use of these software in their respective organisations. Workshop Faculty: The resource persons for the workshop, having wide experience on the topics, will be drawn from NISCAIR, UGC-INFLIBNET, IITs, DRTC , IIMs, along with experienced faculty from the TISS. Fighting against copyright regulations ‘Right to Read’ campaign launched *To highlight the issues faced by persons with print disability – those deprived of Indian books due to unfriendly copyright regulations – a group of organisations launched the Right To Read (R2R) campaign on September 26.* The campaign, jointly launched by the Bangalore-based Centre for Internet and Society (CIS), Daisy Forum of India (DFI), bookbole.com and Inclusive Planet, kickstarted at Loyola College in Chennai on Saturday. “This campaign was part of the World Blind Union’s (WBU) global campaign,” said Nirmita Narasimhan, Programme Manager, CIS. “We are asking all the organisations to lend their support to our initiative.” The campaign comes at a time when the Indian government is preparing to consider changes to the copyright law, which it failed to implement two years ago after disability rights campaigners objected to the proposal to make books and other print materials be made in an “exclusive” format. Nirmita said that this would also be an occasion for activists to urge Government of India to throw its weight behind a WBU treaty tabled at the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) asking for a global copyright regulation that takes into account the needs of persons with print disabilities. “The treaty is coming up for discussion at Geneva (WIPO's head quarters) in December,” Nirmita said and added: “Right now only three Latin American nations are supporting it. Since India has the largest number of persons with print disability, which includes the visually challenged, persons with autism and children with learning difficulties, our support would likely tilt the balance in favour of the treaty.” Now, the campaign will be gradually taken to other parts of the country, said Rahul Cherian from Inclusive Planet. A signature campaign and distribution of a declaration supporting accommodation of persons with print disability in copyright laws will also be held as part of the campaign. Respected Friends, Greetings for the day and seasons, Since long we have been witnessing and subsequently discussing regarding the downfall trend of LIS profession and professionals. Despite of blessed with ICT tools, LIS profession is not able to cope up with need of the users coming from the cross-sections of the society. Every next second we are getting a new e-query regarding very basic services supposed to be performed by the person in charge. What are the reasons of this situation that every new recruitee is find him in a soup and try to make every best possible effort to find out the answers of very basic nature questions? The reason may be any one of the following…………… 1. LIS Curricula is not updated enough so that a student can have the latest and up-to-date knowledge of practical environment. 2.
