However, they are both based on observation and reasoning (ontological analysis) and share some structural principles and elements. In principle, automatic processing of knowledge classifications is significant whenever there is a need to support intuitive services. For instance, ontology-like representations of classifications are recognized as potentially important facilitators in creating a web of linked data (the semantic web). The objective of this conference is to promote collaboration and exchange of expertise between the bibliographic, the semantic web and the AI domains. We hope to learn more about methods in ontology modelling and whether these may be used to improve and formalise the data models of bibliographic classifications and enhance their value in information discovery. Papers are now invited covering the following topics: 1. Modelling and representation of knowledge classifications 2. Standards and solutions for innovative and high-quality classification data processing 3. Applications and implementations of classification structures as ontologies 4.Theoretical considerations of the role of knowledge classifications The proposals should be of interest to academic and research communities dealing with conceptual modelling, information systems design, knowledge organization, knowledge engineering, semantic interoperability& information integration, and natural-language processing. Delay in the delivery of LIS-Forum mails

Dear Members, You may have noticed that there has been a considerable delay in the delivery of LIS-Forum mails especially during the week 22-26 Nov 2010. The delay has been because of some technical problem with the NCSI's email server, the server from which the LIS-Forum is being administered. The problem has been sorted out and since yesterday (Monday, 29 Nov) the normalcy has been restored. If you had posted a message during the last week and would like to know if it has been approved for circulation, you may visit the URL, http://ncsi.iisc.ernet.in/pipermail/lis-forum/2010-November/date.html This URL is a pointer to all the messages that have been approved during November 2010. If you had posted a message but it is not found in the Nov 2010 message list then it is quite likely that it has not been approved for circulation because the message may not have been adhering to one or more policies of the list. 6th TBR Memorial seminar on Web 2.0 technologies for library services- Minutes

Dear Members It is a great pleasure to share with all of you that NCSI-Net team successfully organized 6th TBR Memorial seminar on Web 2.0 technologies for library services on Saturday 13th November 2010 at NCSI Seminar hall, IISc, Bangalore. The response to the seminar by the students and the budding LIS professionals was over whelming. We had 50+ registrations of which most of them were students and young professionals from various universities and organizations in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. Seminar started off with a brief introduction about Dr. T.B. Rajshekar Memorial Seminar Series by Dr. Francis Jayakanth. He also highlighted late Dr. TBR’s passion towards teaching and educating young professionals about the latest developments in the field of ICT and their applications in LIS profession. The first technical session by Francis was on An Overview on Web 2.0. The talk was very interactive. The speaker highlighted the evolution of the Web and the various tools, technologies and the services of Web 2.0 with suitable examples. He also touched upon how the Web 2.0 applications can be made use of in the present day library and information services After coffee/tea break Mr. Rajendra Babu delivered second lecture of the day on Wikis: Concept, Implementation and Examples from the LIS Perspective. Speaker narrated historical development of Wiki, its features, type etc. with suitable examples. Mr. Ananda Byrappa delivered an interesting talk on New carrier opportunities for LIS professionals. The speaker mentioned that lack of trained manpower in the domains like Content Management, Knowledge management, Information Retrieval, IP industry etc,. He called upon young LIS professionals to make their careers in these areas and grab the opportunities available such domains. The talk was well received by the audience and Ms. Suvarsha Minj delivered the lecture on Mashups for Libraries. It was an interesting lecture wherein the speaker covered an overview, workflow, architecture, API’s, Data sources of Mashups. She also demonstrated how to configure web-based and client/server based data Mashups for Libraries with suitable example websites. After the lunch break. Mr. Madhuresh delivered the talk on Blogs and RSS -2 tools for Librarian 2.0. Speaker stressed upon the role and challenges of Librarian 2.0 and asked the participants to make use of Web 2.0 tools to satisfy their users’ information requirements more effectively. He demonstrated how to configure weblogs with examples and configuring RSS feeds. The last technical session of the day was an interesting lecture-cum-demonstration by Mr. Prasanna, on Building Library website using web 2.0 technologies. It was an interactive session and the speaker showed library website with various web 2.0 services like, Video & Audio objects, RSS alerts, Discussion forum, Live Chat etc. Ms. Ramya proposed the vote of thanks. NCSI-Net is thankful to all seminar participants. Judging by the seminar feedback of the participants, the seminar was a great success. We also thank all the HODs and the teaching faculty of various universities and heads of reputed organizations for having deputed their students and staff for the seminar. We are thankful to Director IISc and Chairman of NCSI, IISc, and Staff of NCSI for their support in organizing the seminar. Our special thanks to all speakers of the day and all the NCSI-Net members for their excellent support. World Library and Information Congress: 77th IFLA General Conference and AssemblySan Juan, Puerto Rico, 13-18 August 2011 IFLA Health and Biosciences Libraries Section and Library Services to People with Special Needs Section Call for papers “Beyond barriers to accessing health information” Colleagues from around the world are invited to submit an abstract for consideration for the Open Session jointly sponsored by the Health and Biosciences Libraries (HBL) and the Library Services to People with Special Needs (LSN) Sections Aim and Scope of the Session: It is hoped that papers will cover a wide range of areas of overcoming barriers – for example: · How have language barriers been overcome? Eg multilingual access, publications and other resources in the vernacular, information delivered via the spoken word? · How have mental and physical challenges been overcome? Eg how do you promote mental health information to people with disabilities· How is health information delivered to those with poor literacy skills (literacy skills include basic literacy skills, health literacy, IT literacy etc), and to the socially excluded? · How is health information provided in cultures that do not endorse ‘open’ access to information such as publicly available brochures? · What is the role of public libraries to support health information initiatives? · How can libraries work in partnership with others to promote health information ?
