NEWS: Birds of America, the world's most expensive illustrated book, has been sold for a record price of 7.3 million pounds ($11.5 million) at an auction in London. Sotheby's auction house on Tuesday said the price paid for the work of celebrated ornithologist and painter John James Audubon was a record for any printed book at auction. Dear Sir/Madam, Here is interesting piece of writing appeared in The Hindu editorial of 8th December 2010 on Wikileaks. It raises some of the important questions of Internet freedom. Excerpt of the article ‘Never waste a good crisis” used to be the catchphrase of the Obama team in the run-up to the presidential election. In that spirit, let us see what we can learn from official reactions to the WikiLeaks revelations. The most obvious lesson is that it represents the first really sustained confrontation between the established order and the culture of the internet. There have been skirmishes before, but this is the real thing. And as the backlash unfolds — first with deniable attacks on internet service providers hosting WikiLeaks, later with companies like Amazon and eBay and PayPal suddenly “discovering” that their terms and conditions preclude them from offering services to WikiLeaks, and then with the U.S. government attempting to intimidate Columbia students posting updates about WikiLeaks on Facebook — the intolerance of the old order is emerging from the rosy mist in which it has hitherto been obscured. The response has been vicious, co-ordinated and potentially comprehensive, and it contains hard lessons for everyone who cares about democracy and about the future of the net. Blog of a Commonwealth Professional Fellow

Dear Professionals, Greetings! I am presently in United Kingdom on a “Commonwealth Professional Fellowship” to work on “Information Literacy, Web 2.0 and Access to Research”. As part of this fellowship, I visited several universities in England and Scotland to meet librarians involved in this activity. UK Librarians have been very cooperative and willingly shared their time and expertise with me. I could meet some authors who have made seminal contributions. This gave me a theoretical and pedagogical basis for developing similar information literacy initiatives at my home institute. Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) awards fellowships to committed librarians from commonwealth countries every year. Started in 2002, about seven Indian librarians have received this fellowship so far. CSC encourages Fellows to share their UK experience and benefits with fellow professionals and hence I have set up a blog http://kanamadi.wordpress.comThis is just the beginning and I would keep posting about my new learnings during and beyond this fellowship. I welcome all professionals to contribute to this blog to make it even more resourceful. Emerald announces first open access articles through special partnership with IFLA United Kingdom, November 2010 - Emerald Group Publishing Limited is delighted to unveil the first articles in open access as part of its 'special partnership' with the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). Available from November 1, 2010, the fourteen articles are published in four different Emerald journals: Interlending & Document Supply [http://www.emeraldinsight.com/products/journals/journals.htm?id=ilds], Library Hi Tech News [http://www.emeraldinsight.com/products/journals/journals.htm?id=lhtn], Performance Measurement and Metrics [http://www.emeraldinsight.com/products/journals/journals.htm?id=pmm], and Program [http://www.emeraldinsight.com/products/journals/journals.htm?id=prog]. Under this agreement, papers that have their origins in an IFLA conference or project, have the opportunity to be published in one of Emerald's LIS journals and become open access nine months after publication. This special partnership takes advantage of the Emerald platform to increase the discoverability of research presented at IFLA events. Sjoerd Koopman, Professional Programmes Director at IFLA, commented: "The relationship between Emerald and IFLA is going to bear fruit: the first articles based on papers presented in an IFLA context are now becoming available freely for all.
