With all sorts of information being freely available on the web, it may seem that the role of a librarian in present context is changing rapidly. The basic objective of this national event is to impart education and training to Library professionals on the latest developments in ICTs, teach skills that help them apply the digital library solutions to library services, find out the emerging technologies for delivering quality and value added library services, offer an opportunity to put forth innovative ideas and insights that help the professionals improve access to knowledge resources in libraries, create awareness about open source movement and teach how open source software can be applied to libraries and finally to facilitate interaction with experts in the field and updating of knowledge of the library professionals.It is expected that at the end of five days p! eriod, the participants to the workshop will be able to identify various emerging issues of ICT applications in librarianship and be able to inculcate skills relating to the advancements. It is also expected that after attending this workshop, the participants will become equipped enough in developing/implementing digital library solution in their own libraries.This workshop will provide a platform for learning, interaction, hands-on practice and widening knowledge base of library professionals. ParticipantsLibrary and Information Science Educators, Librarians, Researchers and Students engaged in Management of Libraries and Information Centers will benefit the most from the Workshop. The Course ContentThe workshop will mainly focus following themes: · Application of Information and Comm. OrganizerBanaras Hindu University: Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is an internationally reputed temple of learning, situated in the holy city of Varanasi. This Creative  and innovative university was founded by the great nationalist leader, Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, in 1916 with cooperation of great personalities like Dr Annie Besant, who viewed it as the University of India. Department of Library & Inf. Science: The Department of Library and Information Science of this renowned University is an active and highly regarded Department, which, since its creation in 1941 has established a national and international reputation in its field. The Department initiated Diploma Course in Librarianship, second of its kind in India after Madras University in 1942. In 1961, Diploma course was converted to Bachelor Degree Course. Department introduced One year Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) Program in the 1965 second after University of Delhi. The Department has been served by a number of eminent scholars namely Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, Professor P. N. Kaula, Professor C. G. Vishwanathan, Professor J. S. Sharma, Professor B. Guha, Professor J. B. Subrahmaniam. Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR)Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) was established in the year 1969 by the Government of India to promote research in Social Sciences in the country. Through fellowships, project grants, subsidy for holding seminars & conferences, and provisions for providing support for visits abroad to attend seminars & conferences, the council provides valuable help and encouragement to scholars from every part of the country. Subbiah Arunachalam * Royal Society journal archive made permanently free to access 26 October 2011 The Royal Society has today announced that its world-famous historical journal archive – which includes thefirst ever peer-reviewed scientific journal – has been made permanently free to access online. Around 60,000 historical scientific papers are accessible via a fully searchable online archive, with papers published more than 70 years ago now becoming freely available. The Royal Society is the world’s oldest scientific publisher, with the first edition ofPhilosophical Transactions of the Royal Society appearing in 1665. Henry Oldenburg – Secretary of the Royal Society and first Editor of the publication – ensured that it was “licensed by the council of the society, being first reviewed by some of the members of the same”, thus making it the first ever peer-reviewed journal. Philosophical Transactions had to overcome early setbacks including plague, the Great Fire of London and even the imprisonment of Oldenburg, but against the odds the publication survived to the present day. Its foundation would eventually be recognised as one of the most pivotal moments of the scientific revolution. Professor Uta Frith FRS, Chair of the Royal Society library committee, said: “I’m delighted that the Royal Society is continuing to increase access to its wonderful resources by opening up its publishing archives. The release of these papers opens a fascinating window on the history of scientific progress over the last few centuries and will be of interest to anybody who wants to understand how science has evolved since the days of the Royal Society’s foundation.” Treasures in the archive include Isaac Newton’s first published scientific paper, geological work by a young Charles Darwin, and Benjamin Franklin’s celebrated account of his electrical kite experiment. And nestling amongst these illustrious papers, readers willing to delve a little deeper into the archive may find some undiscovered gems from the dawn of the scientific revolution – including accounts of monstrous calves, grisly tales of students being struck by lightning, and early experiments on to how to cool drinks “without the Help of Snow, Ice, Haile, Wind or Niter, and That at Any Time of the Year.” Henry Oldenburg writes in his introduction to the first edition: “...it is therefore thought fit to employ the Press, as the most proper way to gratify those, whose...delight in the advancement of Learning and profitable Discoveries, doth entitle them to the knowledge of what this Kingdom, or other parts of the World, do, from time to time, afford...”, going on to state that potential contributors are: “...invited and encouraged to search, try, and find out new things, impart their knowledge to one another, and contribute what they can to the Grand design of improving natural knowledge, and perfecting all Philosophical Arts, and Sciences.” Thomas Huxley FRS wrote in 1870: “If all the books in the world, except the Philosophical Transactions, were to be destroyed, it is safe to say that the foundations of physical science would remain unshaken, and that the vast intellectual progress of the last two centuries would be largely, though incompletely, recorded.” The move is being made as part of the Royal Society’s ongoing commitment to open access in scientific publishing. Opening of the archive is being timed to coincide with Open Access Week, and also comes soon after the Royal Society announced its first ever fully open access journal, Open Biology. Mahatma Gandhi University to gain from PURSE

Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, is one among the 30 universities in India selected by the Department of Science and Technology for funding under the DST-PURSE programme. Under it, the university will receive Rs.9 crore for development of research infrastructure. The university has been placed eighth among the 30 top Indian universities selected under this programme based on its h-index (a measure to assess the quality of research in science), university authorities say. The Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence (PURSE) scheme provides substantive research grants to universities based on the scientific publications in Science citation indexed journals through the SCOPUS database. The department identified universities with h-index ranging from 42-26 for R&D support during 2010-11. Mahatma Gandhi University had an h-index of 35. The university will receive Rs.3 crore every year for three years. The grant is to be utilised by the School of Chemical Sciences, the School of Biosciences, the School of Environmental Sciences, and the School of Pure and Applied Physics, along with interdisciplinary centres such as the Centre for Nanosciences and Nanotechnology, Centre for Intensive Research in Basic Sciences, Inter-University Common Instrumentation Centre.
