Dear Friends, This is regarding the survey being conducted by Prof. Harsha Parekh, retired University Librarian, SNDT Women's University, and myself, on the *attitudes towards women in senior academic positions* in institutions in higher education, with the focus on librarians. UGC proposes 20% faculty in Central Universities from other states

UGC proposes 20% faculty in Central Universities from other states The University Grants Commission has mooted that 20 per cent of faculty posts in Central Universities should be filled from candidates from states other than where these institutions are located. The step would not just allow faculty mobility but will also promote national integration and check regionalism. The commission is also planning incentives for universities which adopt this proposal and ensure diversity in faculty population. “Recruitment of faculty should not be entirely from products of the same university; on the contrary, at least 20 per cent of the faculty should be from other states,” the proposal adds. Another proposal of the apex regulator moots reserving 20 per cent of seats in Central Varsities for students from states other than where these institutions are located. UGC has also proposed the creation of an Office of International Relations and Foreign Student Facilitation Centres in each of them to facilitate foreign students’ enrollment. The universities may also be given funds to construct hostels to house international students; the only clause being there must be a minimum of 50 foreign students at each university. Sir, May I know that: if there is any governemnt/UGC norms or rules for weeding out of the obsolete books?. how much books we can weed out and dispose off at a time and after what duration we should weed out the books. whether we can weed out books regularly/every year or after a gap of few years. EPT Award to Dr Francis Jayakanth - Congratulations

Dear Professionals, Let us congratulate Dr Francis Jayakanth of National Centre for Science Information, Bangalore for having been chosen as the winner for the Electronic Publishing Trust for Development award in the first year of its establishment for playing a major role in Open Access movement among the developing countries. EPT has considered 8 aspects of contributions concerned to Institutional Repositories. Unlike other countries setting up of IRs is lead by LIS professionals in India. As seen by myself, the winner of this EPT award Dr Francis has contributed extensively in all 8 aspects specified by EPT. Apart from setting up of India's number one IISc-IR, Dr Francis has trained a number of students through NCSI , as well others for setting up of IRs. While his work has given a wide exposure to IISc research output, the Institute is yet to recognise his contributions suitably. It is unfortunate that NCSI is virtually closed. The legacy of my friend Late Dr. T.B. Rajashekar, one of the India's best LIS teacher and researcher, who was responsible in starting the NCSI course came to an end with his untimely tragic death. While the Institute did not take necessary steps to continue the course, friends like Francis have been doing their best to continue the works and contributions of Dr. Rajashekar. I hope our Professional friends will make use of expertise of Dr Francis in setting up of IRs in their organisations. Dr. I.R.N.
