Date: Wed, 16 May 2012 20:14:54 -0700 (PDT) From: Prof. N. Laxman Rao. <naglaxman(a)yahoo.com> The (Meta)Data is the Difference 14 May 2012 | Yvette Diven, Publisher & Senior Product Manager Posted to: What's New A forward-thinking librarian established Serials Solutions in 2000 with a simple goal: offering a service that would reduce the burden on librarians who needed to manage and increase access to the growing number of electronic journals. The then-small team based in Seattle, Washington, believed that successfully achieving that goal required a strategic commitment to gather, enrich, and share knowledge about the electronic resources that were changing the face of library collections. The result was KnowledgeWorks, the first centrally-maintained, continuously updated e-resource knowledgebase. Over the past decade, Serials Solutions has grown into a global company dedicated to ensuring the future success of libraries as knowledge centers and information gateways. The authoritative metadata that we maintain each day in our central knowledgebase has grown and evolved to support discovery and management services for today's and tomorrow's library collections global coverage of a vast array of resources from e-journals to eBooks, aggregated databases, Open Access offerings, and more.Today, KnowledgeWorks remains the core of our Data solutions and supports the Summon® Service Index to provide true web-scale discovery across the full-breadth of library content. As we continue the development of our new Serials Solutions® Knowledgebase, which is the foundation for Intota™ and will be used by all of our other products and services, we can appreciate that the roots of our commitment to authoritative metadata go back even farther than the year 2000—to 1926 and the work of another forward-looking librarian who understood the need for up to date bibliographic and publisher information that supports librarians and their mission. In celebration of the 80th anniversary year of Ulrich’s™ and its continuing value to librarianship and research, we invite you to read the story of Carolyn Ulrich and the origins of Systematic Serials Control. Fw: Support the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)
by Dr. J. K. Vijayakumar 16 May '12

FYI. -----Original Message----- From: An informal open list set up by UKSG - Connecting the Information Community On Behalf Of Anna-Lena Johansson Sent: Wednesday, May 16, 2012 3:37 PM Subject: Support the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) Support the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) Since the launch of the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) in May 2003, the service has received much attention from the library community all over the world. The number of journals included in the directory has risen from approximately 300 to over 7500 and the number is continuously growing. All content can be harvested and integrated into the library's own collection. The University Library at Lund University has on a voluntary basis developed and operates the service. The development of the DOAJ has been partly funded by, amongst others, the Open Society Institute, but from January 1st 2007 no further significant funding was available. In the long run my organization can not commit to the necessary funding without external contributions. We thus rely on your support to DOAJ. A DOAJ membership offers you a tremendous opportunity to generate goodwill and support the Open Access movement as well as earn the appreciation of librarians and publishers. http://www.doaj.org http://www.doaj.org/doaj?func=membership&uiLanguage=en Membership Benefits Acknowledgement as a DOAJ Member on the DOAJ Membership Page Access to the list of recently added titles Subscription to e-mail list for DOAJ members Access to list of removed titles The right to use the DOAJ membership in marketing activities Categories and calender year Fees Individuals: Euro 110 Libraries, Universities, Research Centers: Euro 440 Library Consortia, Library Associations: Euro 4 400 Aggregators and other Service Providers: Euro 5 500 Kindest regards, Björn Wittenmark Björn Wittenmark Acting Head Librarian Lund University Libraries --------------- Dr. J. Lecture on Today at 3.00 PM at JNU Library
by Ramesh C Gaur 16 May '12

16 May '12

Central Library Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Cordially invites you to the 5th Library Lecture Series and Outreach Programme Topic Depleting Archives and Disintegrating Histories Speaker Ms. Shilpi Rajpal PhD Scholar Department of History University of Delhi Chairperson Prof. Mridula Mukherjee Professor Centre for Historical Studies, School of Social Sciences Jawaharlal Nehru University New Delhi-110067, INDIA. Date: Wednesday, 16th May 2012 at 3:00 pm Venue: Committee Room, Central Library, JNU, New Delhi About the Talk The proposed talk is based on personal experiences of the researcher in various archives and libraries of India. It was her doctoral research that brought her face to face with the working of the Indian archives. The Public Record Act which was passed in 1993 regulates the management, administration and preservation of public records. The talk will highlight weaknesses in the Public Record Act in dealing with present scenario. The Researcher believes that various government departments have little clue regarding the preservation and maintenance of the valuable historical documents that are being look after by them. The art of conserving, classifying and weeding out of these documents largely remains unknown to most of them. It would not be an exaggeration to state that the Indian archives are facing a deep crisis as far the maintenance of its public records is concerned. The talk reveals the dismal condition of archives in India. It further seeks new ways i.e. what more needs to be done in order to preserve the documental legacy of India. About the Speaker Ms. Shilpi Rajpal is PhD Scholar in the Department of History, University of Delhi. At present, she is in final phase of her thesis writing entitled ‘ Madness and Delinquency in Colonial North India ’ 1850-1947’. She was awarded the University Teaching Assistantship in 2009 for the period of four years in the University of Delhi.
