He was commissioned to undertake Architectural Fragment for the Swanston Street Walk Public Art Project in 1992, and it was unveiled the following year. Sited outside the State Library of Victoria, the pyramidal, Port Fairy bluestone sculpture represents a fragment of the library emerging from the pavement as an archaeological artefact might. It has been conceived to engage with its environment, visually connecting to its surroundings through both form and material. Spronk's intention was to create a dialogue of sorts between art, history and place. His inspiration was Percy Bysshe Shelley's poem 'Ozymandias', which speaks of the fragile and transient nature of all that is human. Quoting from the poem, the pedestal reads: 'My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings. Look on my work you Mighty, and despair.' Architectural Fragment is a Pythagorean triangle, which expresses a strong association with the geometry of ancient Greece. Like a fallen classical monument, it reflects the past and alludes to the transience of the present. -- Warm regards. Authors demand royalties from library ebook lending
by Jayadev P Hiremath 18 May '12

18 May '12

Authors are calling on the government to remunerate them when their ebooks are lent from libraries, calling it “patently unjust” that digital titles are currently borrowed with no payment made to the writer. Authors are paid 6.05p every time their physical books are borrowed from the UK’s public libraries, up to a maximum of £6,600, under the government-funded Public Lending Right <http://www.plr.uk.com/> scheme. But ebooks and audiobooks, a growing sector for library users, are not currently included in the scheme, even though the Digital Economy Act of 2010 paved the way for this to be done. Nicola Solomon of the Society of Authors called it “terribly unfair” and said that “authors should be properly remunerated” for their work. “It’s very important to understand that authors do rely on PLR – it’s not just a nice little bonus. Many authors get PLR who are not bestsellers but do very well in libraries. People borrow very different books from the book they buy,” she said. “And authors can’t continue to write if they are not paid for their work.” Authors have a legal right to the payments, she said – and could even consider going to court to recover them. “Since 1992 ‘rental and lending right’ has been a part of copyright protection. That means that authors have a legal right to equitable remuneration whenever their works are lent out,” she said. “The failure to make the payments means that the government and libraries are actually infringing the author’s copyright every time they make an ebook loan and authors would be entitled to sue for the losses caused by that infringement. We have no current plans to sue, and don’t know of any authors who are planning to do so – we would hope that the Government would recognise its legal and moral responsibility to make payments to authors particularly as ebook lending from libraries is becoming significant.” Solomon has written to both culture secretary Ed Vaizey and Conservative MP Louise Mensch, who is sitting on the select committee inquiry into library closures<http://www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/commons-select/…>, to highlight the issue. “Any ebook lending should result in a PLR payment to the author … PLR is designed to balance the social need for free public access to books against an author’s right to be remunerated for the use of their work,” she wrote to Vaizey on behalf of the Society of Authors<http://www.societyofauthors.org/>, which includes Philip Gross, Anthony Horowitz and Sarah Waters on its management committee. “We also wish to remind you that section 43 of the Digital Economy Act 2010 extends PLR to audiobooks and ebooks ‘lent out’ from library premises for a limited time but these payments have never been implemented. This is patently unjust and we urge that this provision be brought into force and that extra funds be made available to cover PLR payments for such lending.” Chair of the society, historical novelist Lindsey Davis, said that authors would “certainly be pushing” for PLR to be extended to ebooks and audiobooks. “We have earned it. It’s not a benefit, it’s a right,” she said. “I would expect to be paid. There is no difference between ebooks and print books – it is all work, produced for people to read … It seems very obvious to me [that an ebook] is just another version of a title, in the same way that a paperback is.” The issue of ebook lending from libraries is proving to be a thorny one for the books industry. Many publishers have yet to sign up to the practice<http://www.thebookseller.com/news/discussions-ongoing-over-e-book-lending.h…>, believing that libraries should “concentrate on delivering physical books to those least able to afford them, rather than offering ebooks to users who can afford ereaders” <http://futurebook.net/content/setting-course>. Booksellers are also expressing concerns, with Waterstone’s managing director James Daunt saying last week that library ebook lending “will be a disruptive force”<http://www.thebookseller.com/news/daunt-library-e-lending-disruptive-high-s…>. He added: “If you can download a book for free and read it, why would you want to own it?” Authors, too, have expressed more general fears that it could undervalue retail pricing and increase piracy. A DCMS spokesman said: “The Digital Economy Act 2010 opened the way for PLR to be extended to library loans of audiobooks and certain categories of ebooks. However, we announced in October 2010 as part of a challenging spending review that we would not proceed with any amendments to PLR legislation to extend PLR to audio and ebooks at this time. Under the existing PLR legislation, PLR applies to loans of books from public libraries.” Jim Parker, PLR registrar, said it would be possible to pay PLR on ebooks and audiobooks, but – with overall funding at the body already cut by 15% – it would mean reducing the rate per loan on printed titles. “Unless more money was allocated – and we’d all be up for that,” he said. © Guardian News and Media 2012 <http://guardian.co.uk/> - Warm regards. A Library for the Future/Libraries feel e-book explosion By Annette Baird
by Jayadev P Hiremath 18 May '12

18 May '12

*Editorial*** *http://www.nytimes.com* ** For over a century, New York’s majestic central library on Fifth Avenue has drawn grateful scholars and dazzled tourists. Faced with financial uncertainties and a pressing need to modernize, the president of the New York Public Library system, Anthony Marx, has put forward a $300 million proposal to renovate the flagship building. The plans<http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/16/arts/design/new-york-public-library-count…>, which are still evolving, sound both necessary and forward-thinking in this digital era. But the library’s overseers have to take care that they preserve the essence of this cultural landmark. Mr. Marx and the city must make certain that the renovation provides the widest possible public access to the library’s collection. So far, the city has promised $150 million, and the library must come up with the balance. The plan calls for selling the Mid-Manhattan branch and the Science, Industry and Business Library and folding their collections into the central branch. The central library will then become a circulating library as well as a research facility. Combining the three libraries will mean about twice as many people, or more than three million a year, will use the central branch. To accommodate more users, the architect Norman Foster is expected to design new public space in areas that are now closed. The Rose Main Reading Room and other special collections will remain as they are. About two million volumes will be moved elsewhere, probably to a facility in New Jersey, though more than two million will remain in the building. Mr. Marx has said getting off-site books should take about a day. Though some library lovers want nothing to change, this plan could revitalize the library and make it as much a resource for the public as it is a research haven for writers and scholars. Libraries feel e-book explosion By Annette Baird As the explosion of interest in e-books continues, area branches of the Houston Public Library<http://www.chron.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=neighborh…>are trying to keep pace with customers' demands by providing the books they want and the help they need to get the most out of electronic reading devices. Libraries in the area have fliers providing instructions on how to get started lending e-reading materials, and Kendall Neighborhood Library<http://www.chron.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=neighborh…>offers a monthly e-reading open house for the uninitiated. Thuy Vo<http://www.chron.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=neighborh…>, who started the open-house program during her recent six-month stint as assistant manager at Kendall, 609 N. Eldridge<http://www.chron.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=neighborh…>, said the library had been seeing an increase in demand for help with e-reading devices, especially from older people. "We wanted to spend more time with those who needed it and assist them one-on-one to download a book on their own device," said Vo, now a technology trainer with the library system. "They were very excited, and they felt proud to learn the new technology." Memorial resident Cynthia Grant<http://www.chron.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=neighborh…>called the Kendall library when she needed help to navigate the e-book system and download books to her Nook. "It's not a difficult process, but it's not intuitive - at least for me," Grant said. "I had to be told what to do to find the books, and they're not always the books you want to read." Grant said the librarian guided her through the process over the phone, and she has since downloaded several books. Of course, with the e-reading devices, the sense of having to use the local library is becoming moot. Depending on availability, members can download e-reading materials anywhere at any time to a wide range of devices, from the Kindle Fire and iPad to smartphones. Other conveniences include emails when requested books become available. When time runs out, access to the book is denied. To get a sense of the popularity of e-book lending, in 2010 7,000 check-outs occurred across the library system. More than six times that number - more than 48,000 - were checked out in 2011. For the first three months of this year, 28,000 e-books had been checked out. E-book checkouts still are but a fraction of the numbers for total library borrowing in the system, which totaled 7.3 million items for 2011. Marianne Lorio<http://www.chron.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=neighborh…>, electronic resources librarian for the system, said HPL still has a long way to go regarding e-books, of which it carries 14,000. She said some titles are not available to libraries, and there is a wide range in prices for each book. "Not all publishers will work with e-books and libraries," Lorio said. "At this point, my goal is to get as much as what's popular as I can." The library system is part of a consortium of libraries that order as a group. In response to the growth of e-books, the system also is continuing a drive to train librarians. "Our goal in the future is to provide more training to staff so they can pass it on to the customer," Vo said. -- Warm regards.
