Dear Sir/Madam, Just to understand why we need Sci hub kind of tools to access information and how unrestricted access to knowledge is addressed previously. - Aaron Swartz and The Guerrilla Open Access Manifesto Aaron Swartz was an Internet wizard who was behind the development of Creative Commons License and RSS Syndication. He took his own life in 2011. But what he did in a span of 26 years of his life was something very extraordinary and interesting. He was a fierce proponent of open access movement. He wrote the “Guerrilla Open Access Manifesto” to propagate free and unrestricted access to knowledge. Swartz did then what Sci hub is allowing us to do now. He downloaded millions of articles from JSTOR through MIT computer networks. The “Guerrilla Open Access Manifesto” reads like this “Information is power. But like all power, there are those who want to keep it for themselves. The world's entire scientific and cultural heritage, published over centuries in books and journals, is increasingly being digitized and locked up by a handful of private corporations….”. - Delhi University and Copyright Tangle with Major Publishers We all know how Oxford University Press, Cambridge and Tylor and Francis didn’t allow photocopy of the course materials they publish for students at Delhi University. They filed a copyright suit against the sale of photocopy materials at Delhi University, however Delhi High Court dismissed this copyright infringement petition. This was done by the major publishers to restrict the access to reading materials. How many of them in a country like India able to afford thousands of rupees to purchase books and other reading materials? - German Researcher boycotting Elsevier Publications Early 2017 some 60+ German Universities tried to cancel the subscriptions to Elsevier journals citing increasing costs. They demanded to make German publications open Access. German Universities wants their research publications available openly for them to access without paying exuberant fees to access their own published materials and others. This was an interesting developments in journal subscriptions and pricing models. There are other intricacies which is not needed here to discuss. But this issue brought up the debate on free access to knowledge. - Microsoft Windows Operating System and Piracy We are all familiar on this. Most of us are using pirated Windows OS for running other applications in our computers. Interesting fact is that except in few occasions Microsoft has never made this issue an important one and also there was no substantial information to claim that pirated Windows OS has lost their financial benefits considerably. Even at times we have heard that the company itself allow general users to have pirated Windows OS versions so that they will be familiar with this OS and help them to thrive their business in a different way. Today we can download songs and films of all kinds through Torrent. Is this legal or illegal? Today Internet itself at the centre of creating an unequal world which was not the vision of the creators of Internet. Migration from Libsys to Koha along with RFID @ NIT Rourkela

Dear All, Many times question is asked by many professionals why NIT Rourkela did not implemented Koha in their library till date? though we helped many in this regard. Please find here the update. NIT Rourkela from 17th May, 2017 fully migrated from Libsys along with old RFID devices and till date it is working fine with lot of new features and lot of work load has been reduces as per my observation. Various automated email alerts has been started i.e. without interference of staff which was not possible before such as: 1. Acquisition status of recommended books by faculty like accepted, ordered and finally received 2. issued,return,renewed,overdue, renewal, reserved books etc. Please note that Acquisition module is fully used for entire work like budget management, order, receiving of books etc. and it is working fine which reduced efforts with accuracy. For cataloguing z39.5 is working fine and now we are able to maintain standard bibliographic records in minimum time. RFID devices like self issue/return Kiosk, staff station, security gate etc. has been integrated with Koha which works fine. Please note the entire works has been done by in-house manpower with the voluntary support of Mr. Monirul Purkait, Scientist, VECC, Kolkata who is mainly responsible for integration RFID with Koha and developed middle-ware solution. Mr. Monirul and Mr. Soumen Mondal (former library trainee) done wonderful job along with other library professionals motivations. However i took all the responsibility for the things which was not done properly if any. Guruprasad, Senior Tecnical Officer of Center for Civil Aircraft Design and Development, CSIR-NAL, Bangalore has been awarded 'Excellence in Research' combined with a 'Honorable Mention Certificate' under the 'Special Achievement Category' for his outstanding contributions to 'Aerospace Information Management'. Dr Guruprasad's pioneering contributions has been in the area of Information Management and Information Dissemination to IAF pilots through Real-Time Digital Videography of critical parameters on aircraft behaviour. This is primarily related to CSIR-NAL's SARAS, India's 14 Seater Multi-Role Aircraft. The work has been highly lauded by the IAF pilots. His contributions also extends in providing high quality aircraft milestone documentation support to the Center for Civil Aircraft Design and Development, CSIR-NAL. Dr. R. Guruprasad holds a MLIS Degree from Annamalai University and a Ph.D. in Library and Information Science from the University of Mysore. The leaders of library movement very much wanted to participate in the conference and get further motivated but the British government denied permission for them since they felt that these leaders from the public would be undeserving and only representatives of the government were. The leaders in the library field felt humiliated at this incident since they were of the view that any conference without participation from the public was of no use and hence they wanted to show their strength of library movement to British rulers. Thereafter , the leaders contacted all the elders from different states across the country working in the field of public libraries and as a result under the able guidance of Sri Ayyanki Venkata Ramanayya for the first time a wonderful National library conference was conducted for two days from 14th to 15th Nov 1919 at Gokhale hall,Madras now Chennai. This conference in which a large number of representatives of library field from all the states participated was presided over by the then director of libraries, sri Kudalkar from Baroda province. There was tremendous response for the conference that it even beat the conference conducted by British government and not stopping at this a huge public rally was followed there by making the British rulers know what the people of Andhra Pradesh were in the field of libraries. In the seventh decade of nineteenth century i.e.,1960 ,sri Chakravarthy who was working as librarian in the ministry of finance , government of India ,Delhi used to have great affection for people of Andhra Pradesh who were instrumental in shaping the library movement and hence he too used to render his yeoman service for the same.The Indian library association submitted a memorandum to declare 14th Nov as National library day since it was a significant day on which the first signal of development of library movement on national level came into lime light and also to celebrate library week till 20th and it was duly forwarded to government of India. The government accepted the memorandum as it was and permission was granted to celebrate library week in all the libraries across the country from the year 1968. Respected All *Developing 21st Century Business Leaders through Practice: The Organizational Dynamics and Role of Librarians and Other Facilitators of Experiential Field-Based Learning In U.S. MBA Education* by *Cullen, Ann*, Ph.D., Simmons College,* 2017*, 258; 10602667 *Abstract (Summary)* This exploratory study identified the types of experiential field-based learning (FBL) courses included in the top 20 U.S. two-year MBA programs identified by the *2015 U.S. News & World Report* ranking. The foci of FBL courses are consulting projects in which students work outside the classroom to develop recommendations for solving a real business problem posed by a company or organization. This research analyzed the organizational structure of these courses and in particular, how business librarians, faculty, career services professionals, and other expert advisors supported the student teams in these courses. The research utilized a mixed methods approach, which began with an online survey of business librarians from the 20 programs, and continued with interviews, website analysis, and the development and analysis of six in-depth case studies. Theoretical support for this research drew from the field of sociology, with a dual focus on role theory and the concept of “jurisdictional claim” posed by Abbott’s 1988 theory of professions. This research informs new ways to conceptualize the design of FBL courses and the structure of embedded librarianship support with social network models that represent the engagement levels of various roles. Beyond the opportunity to work on real business projects, some additional benefits to students of FBL identified were practicing teamwork and learning from the field of consulting to apply to this work. The diverse roles that provided team support also helped the students learn how to make effective use of knowledge experts. Constraints to this pedagogy included working within an academic timeframe and having access to enough individuals with the right expertise to provide the customized attention required. Other factors included contending with project sponsors that changed their project focus, adapting roles and infrastructure to support FBL, and adequately communicating learning outcomes to all stakeholders.
