Dear professional friendsBy now all of you might have come to know about the sad demise of Prof (Dr.) Ashoka Kallappa Baradol, former Chairman and Professor of the Department of Library and Information Science at Mangalore University. I had the privilege of doing my Ph.D. under his guidance at Mangalore University. I would like to write a few lines about him as a mark of my respect for my teacher. I met him for the first time in the month of April 2004 for the preliminary discussions regarding my Ph.D. project. It was through Prof C. V. Rajan Pillai, former University Librarian and the Head of the Department of Library and Information Science of M G University, I got his contact. Prof. Baradol accepted me as a research scholar as I was a science graduate. It was because of his initiative that I could do my Ph.D. under the FIP program of the UGC. We spent together for 33 months in completing the research work. Every afternoon he used to sit with me discussing the top ic as well as about the profession as a whole. Literally, he has gone through every word in my thesis. He was very happy with the outcome and was keen to see that it is evaluated by foreign referees. During those discussions, I always found that he was worried about the quality of academics happening in our field. He was never ready for any sort of shortcut to achieve something. He was reluctant to close his eyes to such practices too. Those days, pacifying him from severe reactions was my duty and in most of those situations, he reluctantly obliged to me. He had problems with his health during that period also. But he was very punctual in reaching his office and for engaging his classes. In fact, I learned a lot from him.Now I know, Guiding a Ph.D. is not alone helping the scholar in finalizing a thesis and getting the degree..It has more manifestations. You can really develop a person's career, involvement, attitude, etc towards his profession. If I have made success in some of my activities after my Ph.D., I owe all those to Prof. Baradol A message of this nature is not enough to express my gratitude to the departed soul. Dear Moderator, Greetings of the day, Please announce the following content in the LIS Forum for the benefit of Technical Institution Library professionals. AICTE & VTU Jointly Organizing Short Term Training Program on Open Source Software for Information Retrieval Systems in Technical Institutions from 09-03-2020 To 13-03-2020. Libraries have been a trusted source of information. Going to a library and picking a book was fun those days. Technology has brought significant changes to libraries. These days Libraries function differently due to the digitalization. Access to information is in real-time and universal. Traditional libraries are forced to re-work on their workflow. Libraries and information centers play crucial role in facilitating and meeting the information requirements of academic and student community of these institutions. The robust web information portal of library of every academic institution is need of an hour. This can be achieved using commercial or open source. Various open source software for information retrieval systems are available under GPL on the net, to name few Koha, Dspace, Eprints, Drupal, Joomla, OpenCMS, wordpress, etc. Training Program Objectives: The objective of the AICTE – VTU Short Term Training Program is to conduct short term training for the librarians to prepare them for being successful information professional and to become an expert on the following important open source software for information retrieval systems. Topics: 1. Content creation (Digitization/capturing born digital documents, OCR technologies, file format and standards and storage media, etc.,). 2. Koha (Open source software for library management). 3. Eprints (Open-source software package for building open access repositories). 4. Drupal (Open source CMS for building dynamic library portal). 5. VuFind (Open-source discovery platform). Workshop plan: Each session (Topic) will have 20 minutes talk and demonstration and 40 minutes for participants to learn and configure that feature of OSS & IRS on their workstation Resource Persons: Experts from industry and reputed premier institutions. Sad demise of Prof A K Bardol

I am extremely saddened to hear sudden passing away Prof Ashok K Bardol. We were class fellows in B Lib SC course at KUD during 1971-72. I heard from his students that he was a wonderful teacher and guided many students for their Ph D degree. He retired from University of Mangalore. We lost one excellent library professional and I lost one good friend. I wish God grant enough strength to his family to bear this great loss. May his soul rest in peace. Libraries that aren’t on the same page with time

It was not the case of Kochi city public libraries.Recently I was interacted with known public library librarian told me that what books selects and sending to the libraries will not be much used by public (Dept can take usage statistics to understand) and discussed other issues like digitization, infrastructure, budget etc. Department unless and until up-skill its employees to make effective use to digitized library or any modern technologies implemented, it will become one more failure attempt. *Chemistry research in India in a global perspective- A scientometrics profile* *Abstract:*Papers from India are cited 14.68 times on average compared to cites per paper of 45.34 for Singapore, 30.47 for USA, 23.12 for China, 26.51 for the UK, 21.77 for South Korea and 24.77 for Germany. Less than 39% of papers from India are found in quartile 1 (high impact factor) journals, compared to 53.6% for China and 53.8% for South Korea. Percent share of papers in quartile 1 journals from India is lower than that for the world for all of chemistry and for each one of the eight categories, viz. analytical, applied, inorganic & nuclear, medicinal, multidisciplinary, organic, physical and electrochemistry whether one considers data for the entire five-year period or for 2015 alone. About 20% of Indian chemistry papers are in collaboration with international coauthors. Researchers from only 160 Indian institutions have published at least 100 papers (compared to 362 in USA and 399 in China) and these include 67 state, 14 central and 11 private universities, 27 institutions under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, 20 CSIR laboratories, seven Department of Atomic Energy institutions, and seven Department of Science & Technology institutions. About 40% of all Indian chemistry papers have come from public universities. Only three Indian institutions, viz Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Indian Institute of Science and Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, have published more than 2,000 papers. None of the Indian universities has performed as well as leading Asian universities. To All LIS Professionals, I am pained to convey the sad demise of Prof. A.K.Baradol, Professor and Head (Retd.) LIS Department, Mangalore University, today 10.2.2020 at 7.30 am at his Son-in-Law's home at Bangalore. The cremation at Bangalore at 7.30 am on 11.2.2020. Dr. Baradol had a rare distinction of having 2 Ph.Ds. in Anthropology and LIS. He started his career as Research Assistant at Karnatak University, Dharwad, and then served at Gulbarga University and moved to Mangalore University, from where he retired. A person with a very sharp mind and has travelled widely. The Railway time tables across India were on his lips. A very straight forward in his opinions and outlook. I spent six weeks with him at Kerala University, Trivendrum in 1986-87 a memorable togetherness we would often relish. He has left behind his well qualified four daughters, and his beloved wife. Dear Agricultural Scientists and Students Informatics Studies is a platform for discussing the emerging trends in theory and application of Information Science and is entering its fifth year of publication. The journal focuses on interdisciplinary and international perspectives on Informatics. Information is a crucial resource in agriculture, potentially influencing the efficiency of production, marketing, processing and administration; as well as education, research and extension related to these factors. So the development process in agriculture rests heavily on information available to managers, scientists and farmers. Yet this aspect of agriculture gets least consideration and inefficiencies have become obvious in managing this resource. Various attempts to develop Agricultural Research Information Systems in most of the countries have failed due to lack of an integrated approach. Informatics Studies devotes Volume 7 (2) (April-June 2020 ) issue for studies on new developments and application of Information and Communication Technologies to solve agricultural, biological and natural resource problems. Dear All, The Special Interest Group on International Information Issues (SIG-III) of the Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) invites research papers for the 20th International Paper Contest (IPC) for library and information science (LIS) professionals in developing countries, for the 83rd Annual Meeting, which will take place in Pittsburgh, USA, from October 23-28, 2020. But with rapid advancement in information technology, the software (like document readers) or hardware (like DVD, CD-ROM) used to store data may become redundant or have already become redundant (like microfilms). This leads to loss of information or data which may be difficult or impossible to regenerate again. Hence, we need digital preservation techniques for long term storage of data objects.
