The way out of this WEB (in literal sense) seems to be only through planned organization, using faceted techniques, of the burgeoning sources of information. The role of XFML i.e. extensible faceted markup language gets defined in this context. The markup language allows one to relate the topics of concern and to provide a meaningful way of accessing information. This seminar on XFML will try to explore its nuances and suitability for defining a web of well-placed, closely-knit information threads. Indian CD Products

Dear forum members, I would like to inform you about a website http://www.indiancdproducts.org/ which is a Bibliography of Indian CD Products. This website is a part of National Center on Publications on CD-ROM (NCPC), a center set up by NISSAT, DSIR at FITT and IIT Delhi. Through the website, one can search CD-ROM by Title, Keywords and Category. Union Catalogue of various organizations is also maintained and facility to search by Organization Name and Title is also available. Search results contain the Title, Description, Publisher/vendor and their address. One of the objectives of NCPC is "To systematically procure all CD-ROMs published in India and on India. (Except software, games, music and purely entertainment CDs and reproduction of foreign CD Publications for the Indian market) and build up a National Repository of CD-ROMs". Keeping in mind the requests made by forum members to get a particular CD, I believe this resource is not being used extensively. The site statistics also confirms the same (almost 11,300 visitors in past 3.5 years). It may be because of lack of awareness or improper marketing of website. However I didn't get the information about number of titles available with the centre, it is systematically procuring all the CD's published in India and also creating a Union Catalogue of CD's available in various Library and Information Centers; so it can be a good starting point for searching a particular CD Title. IFLA TRAVEL GRANT YEAR 2004 IFLA ALP is pleased to announce the availability of the IFLA Travel Grant, to support a number of delegates from developing countries to attend the 70th IFLA General Conference and Council: Buenos Aires, Argentina, 22-27 August 2004. Priority will be given to new professionals with a minimum of 5 years of experience in the field of libraries. In appointing the grants, the Grants Committee will look for a balance between all sectors of library & information work. Applications, including professional curriculum vitae and information on present occupation should be submitted as soon as possible and should be received by the ALP Focal Point not later than 15 February, 2004. Good, So we there is a concensus that a Single Master Database may be build up for Indian LIS professionals. Now let us proceed further and answer the following questions: 1. What is the AIM? and to whom it would benefit? 2. What information would it contain, and what would be the data elements of the database? 3. Are INFLIBNET and INFOLIBRARIAN ready to give their data? If yes, then are their databases compatible? Do they have common structure? 3a. I Remember ILA had similar effort, what is the present status, can some one check out? Can we integrate that data also? 4. How its utility would be better then a discuss group like LIS-FORUM? 5. What are the factors of success/failure of exisitng similiar efforts. What lessions / best practices we can learn from the exiting initiative. How would this knowledge would help us in our proposed initiative? 6. Who will own the data? Robots of web search engines can not collect information about the content of documents from the web pages (HTML pages), as a HTML tags provide no semantic clues about the content of the document. This leads to noise in indexing. One solution is providing meaning to web content by adding metadata. Semantic web is based on Resource Description Frame work (RDF) using eXtensible Markup Language (XML) for syntax and Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) as a naming convention.. DRTC announces a 3 day workshop focusing on the various standards and Request For Comments (RFC) to enable library and information professionals in creating semantic web. Then there was one solution, which basically was very near to an On-Line Bulletin Board/Forum. Just to check out what all it takes to start an On-Line Bulletin / Forum. However the question is always "who will bell the cat?" (Who will pay for the expenses involved?) I have some suggestions in this respect. To have a good database of Indian librarians, why not use the existing librarians directory in www.infolibrarian.com ? OR you may try Inflibnets Experts Database as well. The latter is academic librarians oriented; Inflibnet database's Data Entry Form is far too detailed and this might deter many from adding their own data. Infolibrarian is for ALL librarians. Every librarian, big or small, may be persuaded to enter his details here. It so happens that only Juniors enter their data in such databases. Seniors are too proud to lend their names to be included. To obviate this problem each institute/library may request one of the colleagues to enter all library professionals names into this infolibrarian directory. We have a number of sources for details of librarians like INFLIBNET, INFOLIBRARIAN. ILA, IASLIC, SIS, ALSD, BONET, CALIBNET etc Let us not proliferate more directories that are difficult to keep updated. Let us strengthen just one (ANY ONE) and make it a BIG success. Library Science Schools can ask their students to take up projects of 'mass population' of such databases. For instance some student in SNDT or Mysore University can say collect details of all librarians in Mumbai or Mysore and enter say a substantial part of it into infolibrarian database. Here teamwork mught help large scale data entry. SHe will get project credit from the library school. And the directory would serve him later on in his/her professional life as well. Incidentally the SNDT had (has?) website with a directory of suppliers of Library Requisites -- If this is up and updated our friends like Usha Kumari of Bangalore need not ask FORUM members for sources regarding Electronic display Boards (and hoping for some answer!). OCLC Project Opens WorldCat Records to Google

Dear Professional Colleagues: Proposal for Bharat Gyan Ganga We have three major categories of stakeholders: Librarians (belonging all types--academic, special, public, corporate, etc.) LIS teachers LIS students Library Suppliers (booksellers, publishers, equipment manufacturers, etc.) User Community We need to develop a SINGLE WINDOW interface where all these stakeholders can communicate, meet and share their information/concerns/issues. Even the proposed ASK YOUR LIBRARIAN (may be named as GyanGuru) could be an integral part of this. To avoid the problems of misuse and spams, all querries/postings would be placed on this site and the stakeholders would access by visiting the site instead of emails failling into their email boxes. The replies would also be placed at this site. If somebody wants information, he has to visit this site. Benefits: The user would be communicating to all Indian Librarians through a single email. The query (relating a book/journal/article, etc. or something pertaining to community information such as education, health, employment, etc.) could be answered by the library which has the information. Encourages resource sharing and knowledge sharing. User gets diverse replies and he can choose the best from the available alternatives. The complete knowledge base of the Indian librarians could be productively used thereby enhancing the quality of Indian reference services at one stroke. If the librarian does not have the information, he can forward it to a specialist he knows thereby expanding the knowledge base still further. Provides real life laboratory for LIS schools in Reference Service practicals. The students can handle "live examples" of reference querries. Facilitates library donations The donor can just a send a list of books available for donation to Gyan Ganga. The interested librarians can communicate their willingness. Then, the donor can decide to which library or libraries to donate the books.The right book reaches the right library where it is likely to be used. Establishes contact with library suppliers The librarians would just post their requirements of books/journals/equipment, etc. at this central site. The suppliers would would then along with terms and conditions. The libraries would be able to clinch best prices and best deals. Offers equitable opportunities to all the suppliers. The one who provides the best service would receive the order. We have a vast resource base of various types of libraries. Let's persuade the librarians of all categories (e.g., university, public, special, state central libraries, district central libraries, etc.) to join the proposed group. Enlisting the participation of public librarians is also important. So far, we have marginalised this important group (public libraries) which has valuable resources which even research scholars working in universities would find highly useful for their research. To put it in simple terms, a single querry from any user would be tapping the major LI resource base of India. The only thing we have to ensure participation by all Indian librarians. We can execute this project very easily. The only things that are necessary are: professionalism of the highest order, dedication, selfless service and objectivity. I am ready to take care of enlisting participation of all librarians, LIS teachers, LIS students, based in Andhra Pradesh by collecting their contact details, data, etc. Let's break institutional barriers in the free flow of information! Essentially, all institution-based LI service are public-funded. Why should we deprive the general public, that is, the common man of India, the benefit of information services. Let's use Internet to bridge the digital divide in urban and rural library service in India. Our goal: To answer any reference query within 24 hours wherever the information/document is available in India. The reactions of Prof Shalini Urs, Dr Vyasamoorthy andDr Sukhdeve Singh are encouraging. Let's celebrate library service and regain the joy of providing the same. Initially, persons close to associations like IASLIC, INFLIBNET BONET IATLIS etc could be persuaded to forward their directories/membership lists to Dr Shalini. All such lists, may be consolidated, duplicates removed and left to be updated by individuals via WEB based front end proposed by Dr Urs. Anybody would sit up and look up once the database reaches a critical level, say some 25000 records of Indian Librarians. Dear Friends at Lis-forum I remember, http://www.infolibrarian.com had similar database. They were/are offering such registration facility using some third party (free) service. I declined to fill in my details because I was in doubt if such data could be used by tele-marketing firms. I have bad experience in past due to disclose of my personal details like email, Phone Numbers and postal address. In India there is no law to protect persons from unsolicited tele-maketing spams (all forms, email, letter and phones). My experience say that even reputed firms like India Today sell their subscription data to thrid parties. No wonder you soon start receiving junk all forms of spam. Phone calls from Banks offering Credit Cards (Even on your Mobile phone if you particpate in some SMS contest). I receive atleast one phone per month at my office for Credit Cards. ICICI Bank was one step ahead, they sent me credit card with out mine filling up any application form. Latter on When I prostested and asked them the source of my personal details, I was informed they had taken it from my application form which I had filled up for purchasing Tax Saving Bond some time ago. I am not discouraging from building up a experts database. But then privacy policy should be very clearly stated. It may also give the intented use and any likely misuse of such data by third party.
