Dear Moderator, Please publish the following information in the LIS-Forum. Open Access Week 2011 opens October 24 Fifth annual event draws broad global participation, highlights deep community commitment to Open Access Washington, DC – Open Access Week, the annual event celebrating the global movement towards Open Access (OA) to research and scholarship, kicks off for the fifth time on Monday, October 24. Coordinated by SPARC and organized by more than 2,000 advocates in countries around the world, the event provides an opportunity to learn about the benefits of Open Access, share new ideas and strategies, and inspire wider participation in establishing Open Access as the norm in scholarly communication. Every year, research funders, academic institutions, libraries research organizations, non-profits, businesses, and others use Open Access Week as a valuable platform to convene community events as well as to announce significant action on Open Access. The Week has served as a launching pad for new open-access publication funds, open-access policies, and papers reporting on the societal and economic benefits of OA. This year, programs highlighting publishing and rights management choices for faculty authors, use of new media, and opportunities created by re-mixing and re-using scholarly materials are on tap. Open Educational Resources are another key topic, as is open-source technology. Campuses will be presenting a sweeping range of events, from the Harvard University-sponsored “Yana,” an open-source template for scholarly journals to develop mobile applications to the University of Utah event diving into new media, fair use, and pop culture. Students will once again play a major role, hosting panel discussions, workshops, poster campaigns, Web casts and movie screenings to understand Open Access and its relevance to the everyday student. Event’s such as “SHOW (Share/OpenAccess/Worldwide),” at the university campus in Rijeka, Croatia, will introduce students to Creative Commons licensing, Open Projects, the Open Content movement, the Open Access movement, and the Right to Research Coalition. Participation in this highly successful event continues to grow. This year, there are over 2,000 individuals in more than 110 countries registered in the Open Access Week social network at openaccessweek.org. Participation remains strong throughout Europe and North America and will be complemented by new activities in regions as diverse as Algeria, Gambia, Iceland, Iraq, and Sudan. The global nature of this event is captured nicely by the interactive Open Access Week member map, available on the Web site. To help support local programming, SPARC provides a suite of resources, including a video series featuring leading voices in research and digital technology. This year’s feature is Brewster Kahle, founder and Chairman of the Internet Archive. I have received many calls and emails from professional friends regarding the installation and usage of Calibre - portable version and they are asking me that whether it can be used for digital libraries? Calibre software is available for many operating systems like Windows, Mac OS and Linux. We can install the calibre In our PC's as a application. We can not share the data with other systems like digital library softwares. Yesterday I had mentioned Calibre Portable version, in which we can install the application in our flash drive and carry the files and open in any windows machine. I feel Dspace is the one of the best open source sotware for digital libraries. Dr. ARD Prasad and Dr. Savitha Barve have done a wonderful work on this project. They have customized the Ubuntu operating system with Dspace and Koha. We need to download iso image of the Software, write it on CD and we can install the software. After installation, we can open the dspace and koha software in a browser. (They are inbuilt). If you are not having separate machine to install the ubuntu, you can run the Dsapce software on Virtual machine softwares like VMWare, Oracle VM Virtual Box and Windows virtual PC. Dear Colleagues, I am happy to see that Dr. Deva B Eswara Reddy is elected as the Chair of IFLA S&T Libraries Standing Committee during this year's IFLA World Conference in Puerto Rico (USA). I had a chance to see him elected and chairing the meeting during the IFLA conference. He has been active in this Section and also founded the IFLA Agriculture SIG few years ago. Probably he may be the first Indian to be elected as a Chair for any IFLA Sections. It also happened that he was elected on August 14th, close to Dr. SR Ranganathan's birthday and several "Librarians day" celebrations in India are being held in the week. He was a student of Dr. SR Ranganathan and Dr. A Neelameghan at DRTC, Bangalore in early in early sixties. Public bookshelves have been spotted in Berlin, Hannover, and other areas of the country, including the city of Cologne, where more than 20 volunteers have helped organize public bookshelves in the city. Anyone who passes by can pick up or drop a book on the shelves. In Cologne the books range from classics like “All Quiet on the Western Front” by Erich Maria Remarque to a book on witchcraft, according to the Associated Press. There are currently six public bookshelves in Cologne, one of the organizers, Michael Aubermann, told the AP. Four of the bookshelves are outside, while two are located inside Ikea furniture outlets. Aubermann estimates that it takes about six weeks for the shelves to turn over completely. 10 banned books that might surprise you “This project is aimed at everyone who likes to read – without regard to age or education,” Aubermann told the AP. “It is open for everybody.” Aubermann said the bookshelves haven’t had many problems with vandalism or other tampering. The bookshelves in Cologne are paid for by donations and looked after by volunteers. Aubermann said that while the bookshelves are currently located in more affluent neighborhoods, he and the other Cologne residents who look after the bookshelves want to put bookshelves in poorer neighborhoods so the residents can have access to literature that they might not otherwise see. And the idea may be spreading. Aubermann said he was recently contacted by someone who wanted to put up public bookshelves in areas of Mozambique. A woman who lives in Cologne and works in catering and event management told the AP that she’s a huge fan of the public bookshelves. ”I have often left books here, but frankly, I have even more often taken books with me," Vera Monka said. “For me personally, this project is simply great, because I do not have much money left to spend on good literature." Dear Professionals, "How College Students Manage Technology While in the Library during Crunch Time" is the new technology study from Project Information Literacy. For eight weeks during the spring of 2011, the PIL Team conducted 560 interviews with student participants at 10 different U.S. colleges and universities. PIL 2011 research report presents findings from an investigation of how college students manage and use technology during crunch time: the final weeks of the term. At the same time, it explores deeper issues about how college students use libraries, how and why different kinds of technology use occurs in libraries, and how the activities of research, studying, and learning may be evolving in the digital age. The report says "The purpose of this specific PIL study was twofold: to learn how students manage and use technology during the final weeks of the term, and to understand what IT devices and applications (e.g., Web sites, programs) students select and use for creating individual information spaces while in the library". The taskforce will work on the following issues: Advocate for the adoption and promotion of open access policies as set out in IFLA's Statement on Open Access within the framework of the United Nations institutions (UN, UNESCO, WHO, FAO); Build Capacity within the IFLA Membership to advocate for the adoption of open access policies at the national level, through the development of case studies and best practices for open access promotion; Furthermore the taskforce will connect to the various organizations working for Open Access as indicated in the statement -such as SPARC (US/Europe/Japan), COAR, OASPA,EIFL, Bioline International & DOAJ, among others. Dear professional friends, One of the best tributes to Steve Jobs was paid a few days before he died.A report by Appsfire said the number of Android and iOS apps crossed one million in September.Here is an app Industry in high gear ,accelerating and transforming how people use IT.It has a lot to thank Jobs for. It may be unwarranted to compare Jobs to Einstein or newton.But there is no doubting that he could see possibilities not visible to normal human eye.He put his talent to good use in App Store,which encouraged independent developers to build applications for the growing base of iPhone users. Jobs pitched his products as elements in an eco system.He worked tirelessly with music labels to create iTunes to provide downloadable music to iPods.iPhones came with an App Store,where you could download apps to run your life. The idea was a run away hit and within two months of the launch in July 2008 ,100 million apps had been downloaded.It set a trend as the competition realised they could not sell phones without apps.The effect of App Store as we realise now has been more farreaching than just selling mobile phones. Programmers work to meet real -life human needs.But it is tricky to figure out what people want and Jobs famously maintained that people do not know what they need.Many companies start with a unique insight into people's needs and develop a successful product.But as they grow big they tend to move away from consumers.IT companies also need to target opportunities of a certain size that can support a viable scale of operations.App Store forced a paradigm shift in IT. It created niche markerts for small developers,through it is debatable how much money they have made on apps.But here was a platform to pander to all kinds of pressing or whimsical needs of the consumers. You name any biological or cultural fact of life - from sex to satellites - there is an app to do something about that. People also got used to idea of building key activities of their life around apps. It also sparked off a virtuous cycle- apps driving smart phone sales,which in turn lead to more consumption of apps - to transform mobiles and tablets into primary computing devices. Theme: LIS Education, Research and Training (LISERT): Vision 2020 Many issues and concerns have evolved during last few years in a rapidly changing scenario of LIS Education, Research and training (LISERT). Library Education is now more than100 years old in India, and it is time to take stock of the present situation to develop a vision for the near future. In order to discuss these issues and concerns, IATLIS has decided to organize the XVIII IATLIS National Conference on the theme ‘LIS Education, Research and Training: Vision 2020’. In the centenary year of the LIS education in India, this conference would be organized jointly by the Department of Library and Information Science, Gujarat University, Ahmedabad and the Indian Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science (IATLIS) from 26-28 November 2011. University of Hyderabad VCs blog on Open Access and Vidyanidhi

Dear Friends, Read this blog : http://hcurocks.wordpress.com/2011/10/03/open-access-scholarship/ I am happy to share this blog post about Open Access and Vidyanidhi Digital Library by one of the early champions of Open Access including ETD (Electronic Theses and Dissertations) movement in IndiaProf. Ram Ramaswamy, Vice Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad. Prof. Ramswamy (then professor and Dean at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi) with whom I had the privilege of interacting during my efforts way back in 2003, to enlist the support of different universities in India to join hands with Vidyanidhi Digital Library initiative (www.vidyanidhi.org.in) He was one of those academics who showed lots of enthusiasm and championed the cause of Open Access and ETDs. Though JNU did not join Vidyanidhi (despite several efforts and meetings), Prof. Ramaswamy gave away all his students theses to Vidyanidhi. May his tribe increase! In line with his belief about making things happen and to reach academic books reach a wider audience, Prof. Ramaswamy is also associated with the Scholars Without Borders initiative - http://www.swb.co.in/ which has been striving to help deliver books across the world. Let me take this opportunity to share the vignettes of Vidyanidhi. Vidyanidhi began championing the cause of Open Access and ETD way back in 1999 and the Vidyanidhi project funded by the then NISSAT was initiated in 2000. We expanded with funding from Ford Foundation in 2003. Vidyanidhi is one of the earliest and long-standing online digital libraries. We are online since 2001 (contrary to the claims by Mahatma Gandhi University Library that their online theses library-www.Mgutheses.org is the first though started in 2008☺ It is the decennial of Vidyanidhi! We have been online without a break for 10 years. So we can perhaps claim that it is one of the longest surviving online libraries in India. We are still the largest digital library of Indian Theses with more than 12,000 full texts available online. We were the first online library to offer a Unicode compliant system to access Indian Language Database and automatic transliteration of Kannada and Hindi metadata. It is due to our championing and advocacy efforts that the UGC adopted the ETD policy in 2005 and current move towards the ETD repository initiative.
